Run the Raid is a trail half marathon that started in 2024, Having heard about the event late I decided to repeat, and modify the route as an excellent long run. I also discuss my plans for the next few months and why 2.2 is the key number for heavy runners wanting to get quicker. Some great photos by Harry Hay included. Decided to do a 30km plus run on rough terrain on legs that were already tired...why? Really good question. Basically trying to practice the second half of the ultra marathon I will be doing, hopefully, on Tiree. Ollie brought his new bike along but wished be had run it instead. The Great Glen Way is a long distance path between Inverness and Fort William. At 78 miles and 1500m of climbing most people take 6 days on foot or three on a bike. We tried to do it in one!! A week before it had been 23degree C, oh what a difference a week makes!! My oldest son Ollie has been selected as one of Scotland's representative for the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. Well done 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks
I got my first ever sub 20 at West Links Arbroath Parkrun. Nice and flat but it’s rather boring. Only been once but it’s a place I’ll remember simply because of the sub 20 run. These conditions are not pb friendly. All the best on your running journey my friend.
I'm 52, height 5 foot 8 weight 63kg 5k this year 20:45. Target 2025 19:xx. Currently running 50k a week with two hard sessions a week. I don't really have a target weight, more a target look. I look at the world class 5k athletes from Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia and they are all more skin and bone than me. Same heart size, same lung size, less weight, go faster and probably just as important, less stress on knees, ankles, foot tendons, calves, achilles etc. Looking to build up to 60km a week over the next couple of months, small distance progressions spread over 6 days a week of running. Such a great sport!
Icy roads zap the strength. Easily comparable to gaining 10kg of weight.
Thanks Tak. Nearly over the man flu so should see in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching
Assuming you are not at perfect weight or are not underweight to start with, 1kg fat loss will gain you 1% performance.
its fair to say I have never been perfect weight!!!!! thanks for watching.
25.17 is great, mate, especially when your previous fastest km was 5.07. You just ran 5km at 5.03. The theory works. In fact, it's not even a theory, keep training, structured running and you'll most likley take it the next time around. Do 4 weeks training and hit it again 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Matt, yes sure I would have got below 25 on the Christmas Day park run but got visited by Flu instead:-( 2025 should be good though, aiming for sub 50 10k and sub 2 hour Half Marathon. Also doing The Lap with my oldest lad. Hope you enjoy the channel. Ian
When you're at the right weight and fit it still takes a number of attempts for all factors to slot nicely into place - so PBs might only happen every three or four attempts. Maybe your next attempt will be worse or maybe better. You got a PB despite several factors against you and I think a clear cut sub 25:00 parkrun will give you another boost. Be disciplined with the food, esp previously over xmas because the continued weight improvements will amplify your results. 23:00 5k doesn't seem like a silly target, 50:00 10k again fine and after that a sub 2 HM isn't really pushing yourself. To start with it seems a bit dreamy and then it's a distant challenger but eventually you get it done and those results are just a little measure of the improvements you've made. Good luck
Thanks Dave. Sub 30min 5k and sub 60 10k also took a while to get. Yes Christmas is a challenge. I recon I will get to my target weight by early spring, that will be the next massive test, how to have a stable weight and eat 'normally' without putting it all back on, I think I will have to accept that summers see my weight rise, winter seas it fall. All the best. Ian
Have just lost 9.5kg myself, but know that I haven't seen a speed increase yet because of a lack of energy, I think I need to go back to eating a bit more before I will see the benefits on my 5k time.
I know what you mean, trying to push hard be low carb is not easy. Maybe quicker over Christmas, or maybe slower if I over do things.
Good video mate. I'm about the same size as you and been trying to get under 25min for my 5k too. I think it's a decent pace for us bigger lads! Keep up the good work. I'm gonna try and not indulge too much over xmas!
Thanks Mark. Yes think sub 25min is good what ever your size, good luck with your efforts. Yes to be honest I am half looking forward to having a break over Christmas and half dreading it in case I cannot get back to weight loss beast mode. If I can get back I may be at my target sometime in March in which case I then have to learn to be stable, my weight goes up or down. Anyway 120kg lost, 10kg to go.
It's "Losing". There is only one o.
Thanks Steve
Real down to earth personality and a great watch. Look forward to following your journey. Enjoy Christmas...that will be just a little bump in the road but you have to live a little still.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, please share to anyone who may find this useful or interesting All the best Ian
Impressive effort.I hope you continue to progress Looks a great pr venue.
Bempton, ‘down in Yorkshire’ ….. I like it! (written by a Dorset coast inhabitant, currently in Cornwall. Nice vid. take care …. up there. 🙂
As I used to say when i lived in Yorkshire ''Anything south o Doncaster s highly dubious' now move the boarder to to the Forth Bridge. Glad you liked the vid. Take care yourself, heard lots of scary things about the deep south🤣
Great running and a great shot of a beaver 👌
Good effort. Enjoyed your video. Beautiful parklands. I parkrun here near Sydney on the East Coast of Australia. Not quite as fast as you but then I turn 78 in a couple of weeks. I lost weight before I started running just over a year ago by canging my diet and eating habits. When you are lighter it not only reduces the impact forces of running on your body lessening risk of injury but also makes running faster much easier. Worked for me.
Well done, a very respectable time. Look forward to seeing the rest of your journey.
Thanks Alan, going very well, new 10k pd on Sunday by 2min on a tired training run. Hoping to get back to Perth Parkrun this Saturday to go for sub 25. Snow and ice pay stop play.
Hi Ian, not sure how I ended up here, but well done on the transformation. I went through a smaller weight loss experience a few years ago, and then a battle with cancer and chemo (trust me when I tell you I'm glad the weight came off first). Since getting done with treatment and starting from scratch physically, I've been running and cycling daily, and completed two ultra marathons this year. It is crazy how relatively little time it takes to be able to do things that were previously impossible, with a little bit of consistency!
Taken me 8years and still not finished but close. Well done on your weight loss and other battles. Done one ultra, oddly I found it really bad for my weight as i had to have carbs for the training and i don't do moderation. If i reach my target in time i will TREAT myself to a spring ultra, if not my next is in September. All the best
🫡
Thank you sir.
Ian, that was brilliant. I'm very tempted to have a go at that event. You made it look really good. Well done.
Thats the best footage i have ever seen of a wte Ian, thanks for the video, Mick.
Well done Ian, especially after Tiree! 🎉
Thanks, a walk in the park compared to Tiree
Nice video. Well done Ollie 😅. Great job Ian too.
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done
Thank you so much
well done Ian. Great job. Such an inspiration. Well done my friend
Many thanks
My friend, who also completed Tiree this year, just shared your video with our running chat. Huge well done 👏 very inspirational
That is great, thank them for the share
Well done!. My husband ran it this year too. He said nothing was happy about happy Valley😂.
Yes it was very tough, at one point we had a look at the steep downhill and found another route
@@IanHayWildLife seen a few get to the top of happy valley and look down like jesus christ.🤪🙈 it looked bed from where a was watching at the bottom. Well done to you both on awesome achievement
You’re an inspiration 💪 see you on Tiree next year!!
We are doing the Lap instead but it was a great event
aw yeah 😎
Looks like such a great walk, will need to go there and see if i can spot the beavers, one of my favourite animals. Cheers!
Fascinating.
Brilliant blog mate, may I ask what gimbal head are you using.
Incredible video!
Stunning aerial shots. Lovely to see so many in Nairn this year - been incredibly elusive for a few decades. I remember watching dozens in a matter of hours heading north each year at this time on the Ayrshire coast, about 30 to 40 years ago.
Great video
Was great thank you Ian
Wow, That was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙂
Fabulous! Thank you!
Hi Ian, that was me with the puncture there. Thank you very much for taking the time to help us. It was much appreciated but unfortunately my tyre was unrepairable so I walked to Dalwhinnie before getting picked up
Wow well to you both!
Love your channel, being familiar with Multiple, I really enjoyed your videos and the information together with photographs
Amazing photos, tá siad go iontach. I'm from Ireland and the Capercaillie has been extinct here for nearly 300 years. Its great to see that people have a passion for endangered Indegenous wildlife so please keep up the good work Bí sábháilte agus sláinte
Nice one Ian I've also photographed them at brid in the past.
I just love Mull and that sound of calmac I could hear that from the Craignure Campsite 😂😂😂
Such majestic bird! following the channel!
Harriers are known as the sky dancer of the sky , good video .
Hi Ian, not quite related to this vid but recently watch nice ones of your Mull trips, Im off their soon and would like to ask your advice re best focal length specifically for the eagles. As its hard to judge the distance they are from the boat on video. Thanks
Wow! that's great!
I’m on Mull right now and I’ve seen golden eagles and so many other birds. Mull is magical …
Very lucky, we go on Friday for the second time this year but we struggle to find goldies
I think why the female capercaillie came to you is kinda same thing as here in Finland, sometimes Capercaillies come to humans during lek or after it, females being messed up from hormones or desperate to get mated.
Very low audio sound, cannot hear what is being said is a bit muffled also, room acoustics. Maybe a microphone would have helped.
