Foster Your Affinity
Добавлен 14 мар 2018
Hey there! Welcome to my channel. I'm Rob.
I've been learning how to draw and design using Affinity Designer and I'm sharing the things I learn with anybody who wants to listen. I hope you'll join me on my creative journey. I mostly use Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo on iPad, but I'm sure we'll dive into the desktop versions along the way.
Thanks for dropping by and checking out my work.
Breathing Beauty & Nostalgia Into Old Photos with the Dehancer Photo Plugin and Affinity Photo 2
In this session, I sit down and talk a bit about my experiences using the Dehancer Photo plugin with Affinity Photo 2. I demonstrate how to install photoshop plugins, how to navitage the dehancer interface, and how to create a classic analogue film look from scratch. I also talk a little about their app for iOS, which is really cool.
Also, Dehancer was kind enough to give me an affiliate link that my viewers can use to save 10% if they wish to purchase the plugin or any other tools from the Dehancer website. !! Just use the link below and enter the promo code FYA at checkout !!

This is a slideshow I made featuring some of the preset film emulations you can find in the Dehancer plugin. A few custom presets I made for the app are featured as well. Essentially, while reviewing the app I went through a bunch of my old photos and started seeing what they would look like given the Dehancer treatment. I made this slideshow for my review originally, but I thought it came out ...

Anime Style Vector Illustration Tutorial - Affinity Designer on iPad
Thanks I was going insane trying to find this feature 😂😂😂
Thank you for watching! I'm glad I could help. It's one of those things that drove me crazy to when they overhauled the interface. 🤣
Your video is super 😀
I am struggling at 16:45 using gesture control and loop to select😢 please help
Well, the command controller has an option where you can swipe down on the control key you want to use and lock it. So, to do the loop select with the node tool you either hold down option or swipe to lock it. Once it's locked it will turn blue. (option is the bottom one) Once you're done, you can swipe down again and unlock it. I hope this helps! 😄
Thank you for the detailed explanation! I would also like to ask what the differences would be if I use the vector brush tool?
Hey! Thank you for watching! Well, there have been many new developments since I filmed these sessions. These days, we've got a bit of an issue with the new "auto smoothing" that is happening by default on both the brush and pencil tool. They added this feature to try and help us, but it is actually a bit of an issue these days. It's really tricky to get the right pressure curve and look now from just one stroke. They added the line weight tool to try and make editing the line easier, but I feel like it takes away from the natural drawing experience. - With the vector brush tool there are only two things to remember. It was designed to allow us to use Textured Intensity brush images. So, it's really useful for drawing or painting textured image lines. However, you can't expand the image into vector. Only the path will be vectorized. However, you can create "basic round" brushes for the brush tool which can be vectorized and expanded if you wish. In the past I actually favored using the brush tool with a round brush to do vector inking because the lines would not remain selected after drawing them. But now, the pencil tool has been given the same option by simply toggling "keep selected" - I just hope they work out the auto smoothing soon. It's a bit wonky still, and It doesn't feel as smooth or natural as it used to. I really appreciate them trying to help us though. The vector line work is a tough nut to crack! I hope this helped!
Thank you! Just started with Affinity Designer 2 after a long and unhappy relationship with Adobe. Five minutes into it and I’m already super happy with how easy it is to work with. 🤩
Hey! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video, and thank you for watching. Affinity life is definitely my best life at the moment. I hope they keep going! : )
When you were making the shape of the shark fin and at the top while drawing the blue node extension to the right, you said "break it" then was able to pull it down vertically. I cannot figure out how you did that. Completely new to this program. I have followed everything else up to that. Thanks so much!
Hey! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've been really busy with work these days. Hmmm. Well, on iPad, you can use finger gestures to perform different types of movements with the node and pen tool. I used a press and hold gesture there. If the node is aready a "smart" or "smooth" node, can use a one finger press and hold gesture to break the symmetrical movement of the node handles. Then you can adjust only one side of it as desired. I hope this answers the question, and sorry again about the delay. My RUclips has fallen by the wayside these days as I am really hemmed up with other work at the moment! Take care, and best wishes.
Great tutorial. Been wondering how do you choose the dots size ?
! Great question! First off, thanks for watching the video! Well, the dot size is pretty arbitrary with respect to this particular demonstration. The ipad templates and tutorials I included in the kit were designed for single panel illustrations. It would appear quite different if I were to try and illustrate a sequence of panels on this size canvas. Also, in the beginning, the QKV was created specifically because we cannot generate the halftone dots inside Affinity Designer on its own. So the plate system I devised to work within the app has a fixed dot size as the plates are previously rasterized pixel layers. You could in theory select them all and transform them down to a smaller size, but you'd get lots of pixelation and distortion. Also, you wouldn't have enough dots to cover the entire canvas if you transformed the dots down to a smaller size. The original dot size was chosen as it looked appropriate to what would be there in a single panel an entire imaginary comic page had actually been printed. I hope this answers your question. Thanks again for dropping by!
@FosterYourAffinity Once again great explanation, thanks ;) You know I'm using Color lab for Procreate and tools have a grain scale adjustment which makes them dots appear bigger or smaller plus canvas size itself make them appear different to the eye. Just feels like I'm out of balance with that process so looking everywhere for some clues. I know what overall look I wanna achieve but I'm not quite there... Cheers

@@FosterYourAffinity thank you very much! The series is awesome! Don't let those assholes get to you!! Have a great day :) Edit: couldn't open the videos 😢 I guess they should be "unlisted" rather than "private" to allow you to share those links
thanks this is helpful for some things, but please for the love of gloyd get a cursor. that blue dot that jumps around the screen is impossible to follow, and you’re using buttons without explaining what they are or what they do. this is still more useful than not, but my poor eyes can’t followwww
Hey! Thanks for watching my video and for the feedback. Actually, I've moved on from iPad for the time being so yeah most of my videos use mouse cursor. Unfortunately though, I've been very busy with business and haven't made videos in quite some time. However, I agree with you. The blue dot is a bit hard to follow. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Best of luck to you!
I think it was amazing technique in affinity designer. I never think it before. Thank you. Forgive me more flexible knowledge, and technical in protectors.
Hey! Thanks for watching my video! I hope you can use the protractor to help with the design and illustration process! Best of luck!
IS it possible to create vector glow brush? Like Lightpen in Procreate? Thanks.
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, and thanks for watching the video. What you're looking to do would be a bit difficult, as things like that tend to be achieved with FX and layer modes. Check out my Christmas Light Vector Brush. Those brushes utilize lighting effects and styles to achieve a "glowing" effect. If you check that video out and download the free brush assets, you will see how it works and be able to reproduce the effect.
This is easy to do, but I got no results. No lines at all.
Hi Susan! I'm not sure why but I'm just now seeing this comment! Sorry for the late reply. I hope you got it sorted with the grid toggle on/off option. Thank you for watching my video and for commenting! Cheers!
thanks i looked for hours and several videos thans .

Can anyone tell me why my ipad version of affinity designer 2 looks so different to his?
Hey! Thanks for watching the video. This video was actually made in V1! That's why it looks so different.
@@FosterYourAffinity aha, mystery solve. Really glad i found your channel and Affinity is getting more attention. Thanks for your reply too.
@@BillieFingers 😆 no problem! Thanks for watching my video and for the kind words!
Which tablet would you recommend more Deco pro medium Huion q620m Huion inspiroy 2 L
Well, here's the deal. In full disclosure. I have been super busy since I made this video. I had prepared a full review of the Inspiroy 2L. In terms of the tablets I have used. I much prefer the Huion. It's all about the pen and drawing surface. XP's pens from the Deco Pro lines were just too wobbly and clicky. - However, a few months ago, I upgraded to a Huion Kamvas 22 Plus, and I love the heck out of it. The pen is nearly identical, can use plastic and felt nibs, and is very responsive. - I bought the Kamvas on the strength of the pen that came with the Huion Inspiroy 2L. I just really liked it. After a while, I realized how tough it was for me to assimilate to drawing on the tablet. So, even though I was getting pretty good at it, I decided It would be better and more time efficient for me to upgrade to a display. However, I still use the Huion Inspiroy with my laptop for sketching and coloring stuff when I'm away from my home office. It's pretty awesome, much better than the Deco Pro in my opinion.
@@FosterYourAffinity much appreciated my friend ❤️
@@FosterYourAffinity looking forward to upcoming videos
One possible reason why the stroke/fill change where the front/back affect happens is that in printing, you need the fill to bleed into the stroke so if any misregistration in print occurs there’s an overlap to fix it so no white gap occurs. Ensure you select the stroke to “overprint”.
Thank you! I don't know what happened but I missed this comment completely! Thanks for watching my video and I'm sorry I couldn't respond right away!
Thanks for taking the time to go over this. Always learn new stuff. One idea you may wish to implement for showing the editing and changing abilities of the various strokes is to start with an existing graphic, try recreate it on screen from start to finish, and show how its strokes were made and applied. This will give a more visual and practical look at how the changes can affect the designs outcome in a visual way. Again, thanks.
Hey! Thanks for the thoughtful comments and for watching the video. Gosh, there’s so much I wanna do, but I’ve had to take a bit of a break these days due to work. Perhaps one day soon I can get back to making videos regularly! Thanks again! Cheers. 🍻
Impressive work
thanks! and thanks for watching!
Much much easier if you center the text (using text alignment) and put the green and red triangles in the bottom corners of the rectangle.
Indeed! Thanks!
26:12 what is precision mode and how do you use it?
Precision mode is a stabilization feature that is native to the drawing tablet I use. I use a Huion Inspiroy 2L these days, but in my experience both XP-Pen and Huion tablets have this feature. Essentially it is a stabilization feature that restricts active area of the tablet and slows the speed of the input so that you can draw difficult lines steadily. I should note that Affinity's stabilization is also good, but the implementation features the ropes that you must pull along the path. Sometimes this is very helpful, but often times I use the tablet's precision mode as it is a bit easier to control.
@@FosterYourAffinity gotcha, I thought it was an Affinity feature 😬
On the blend mode my flyout only has the options 'Add to selection, Delete, Lock or rename layer'...
Whoa! How'd I miss this?! - Yeah, I haven't been using my iPad for a while now and wasn't aware of the change till you mentioned it! I guess they changed it in one of the recent updates?! Go figure!
Hi. Where can i purchase these brushes? Link i have version 2 of designer.
Hey! Sorry it took me so long to reply. I’ve been busy and away for a while. I actually took them out of the store. There were a few problems after the V2 launch. I will check them out and put them back tonight when I get home! I will comment here when I do! Cheers, and thanks for watching my video!
hi there! It took some time but the gumroad support team put the item back into the store! I hope you enjoy! Thanks 🙏 again for the support!
@@FosterYourAffinityI’m having trouble downloading them. Did you take them down again?
@@CreativelyCristen Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I put them back up! Use Coupon Code CRISTEN at checkout!
You should check out Infinite Painter, it has actual 1/2/3 point 3D guides, you can draw 2d shapes and snap to the different planes and they appear correct, it’s not vector though.
Just wanted to ask, is the QKV compatible with Affinity V2? I can't seem to find a way to contact you on Gumroad to ask.
Yes! The brushes and kit are compatible with V2. I’m working on an updated and expanded version including some comic creation assets, but it’s taking time. Thank you for your interest!
any recommendation for a good vector brush pack to buy, for drawing smooth tapered ink lines?
To be honest, these days because of the new pencil tool improvements I have been using basic rounds with pressure. I think they are superior to textured intensity brushes because if you need to expand them later you can. You also have to consider that they do not have any extra data attached to them i.e. the textured image. It is still not perfect yet. On iPad at least, if you try to go to fast you will get crashes. Especially if you use the stabilizer. On desktop you won't run into many problems at all, - it seems to be all about the way the iPad version processes everything. On iPad we have to go a little more slowly. As for the line tapering. Try this, if you're on iPad, tr going to the navigator studio, toggle the FX view off, and set the main view mode to Pixel. Now, if you want to ink with the pencil or brush tool, it will allow you to see how the lines are really presenting in pixels, and will allow you to go just a tiny bit faster with your drawing. You should still use caution not to go too fast though. It takes a bit of self control. I crash a lot becuase once I get flowing, I sometimes forget that I am working with vector and not pixel. The point is though that it shows you just exactly how fine the taper "really" is. We have to remember that the vector information is there so that when we export the final images, the vector data can be translated to whatever dpi and size we want without loss of fidelity and clarity. That's why it's great to work in vector for certain things. It gives us absolute confidence that our final output will be crystal clear no matter what size we need to export at. - Try out the new pencil tool feature "toggle keep selected" - It's much more like drawing with the brush tool. I have been using it almost exclusively lately. - I hope this helps!
Cool except can you say how you got the right hand side panels (studio) to minimise into a stack of icons please, no one has done a video on this:(
Question if you don't mind helping me out with brush strokes.(affinity photo) For context i have a touch screen laptop. When i switch from using the scroll pad to the touchscreen the opacity drastically lightens even though it's the same number and size and brush. Kind of a hassle just editing from the scroll pad😂 Any advice on what I'm doing wrong or how i can fix it?
Hey! Thanks for watching the video and for the interesting question! - Well, I can't be sure about it, but you see. with the scroll pad, there may be some data input that is having an effect on the opacity. I can't be sure what the problem is there, but you might try checking the brush you are using to see if you have linked the opacity to the pressure. That might be adding anunwanted element to the equation. Also, you might try just turning the controller of the brush from pressure to none. - You won't be able to draw with pressure from your stylus (if you are using one) but it might mitigate the problem as well. - You can preset the desired pressure in the stroke studio pressure window. - I wish I could offer more, but I don't have any experience with touchscreen laptops! I'm not quite sure what they are capable of. I use a Huion drawing tablet for my desktop application, and of course my iPad has the apple pencil. - Let me know if these solutions help! Take care, and thanks again!

Exact what i wanna see, gj mate.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! This one was a lot of fun. Need to do another study at some point!
Great tutorial. Very nicely done. Is there a way to animate it? (Flashing lights, etc)
Hey! Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, there isn't a way to animate it in Affinity. However! You can export the separate components and try to animate it another application like Blender or Procreate Dreams. There are several other apps that can animate vector components. - I'm not very familiar with animation process though, so my experience only goes so far as general knowledge of the apps themselves. I have never animated anything! Thanks again for the kind words and time. Cheers!🍻
amazing voice and tutorial
Thank you for watching, and for the kind words!
Dude, you gotta try Affinity Designer 2.0. It’s got all the beef of illustrator and photoshop in one platform but with an artist friendly interface. So you can work with raster and vector images in one place. They have desktop and iPad versions. I use procreate and affinity in place of illustrator (but that’s mainly because Adobe and I don’t get along)
Thanks so much for a great tutorial, I learned so much. I'm new to AD2 and I could follow what you were doing which was great, to be fair you didn't state if it was for beginners/intermediate but as a complete beginner it's a great video :)

Do you know how long the tip of the Pen lasts?
Well, I just changed mine at the end of October. I would say it all really depends on how often you use it. I’m drawing on my tablet about 1-2 hours every day. Some people claim the nibs last much much longer, but in my experience they do get worn down near the tip after about 4 months; 5 months max. Also contrary to reports by some, I think it definitely effects the drawing experience because the distance between the pen tip and the pen itself changes with retraction; thus altering the data being transmitted by the pen. I start to notice when my nibs is getting worn down when the pen sensitivity and pressure suddenly starts to feel different even though I haven’t adjusted the settings. - So yeah, in my experience, the nibs wear down after about 4 months of daily use.
@@FosterYourAffinity Thank you for answering in such detail. I couldn't find a compatible nib for this pen on the internet. Do you know which one is compatible?
@@yusufayvz You’re looking for the PN05A or PN05F - These are the nibs that work with the PW110! store.huion.com/products/pen-nibs-pn05a - It’s also worth noting that the PW517 is also available for use with this tablet! That’s something cool to look into.
@@FosterYourAffinity Thank you so much. Appreciate
Aaah man, great stuff for photographers for sure, i love seeing this breakdown, gives it a great amount options to make the image the way you like. 👍Keep fostering the creative affinity!
Thanks man! 🍻Yeah, I'd had the idea for this type of slideshow quite a few years ago but never had a project to use it on. Then suddenly this Dehancer thing just fell into my lap. Was really fun to put together.
Great video! Dehancer definitely looks like a great option for photographer that wants a specific look or need while doing a few tweaks. 👍Nicely done.
Thanks Doc Duck! Yeah it was an awesome surprise, and was the thing I got caught up working on last week. I couldn't record much because my voice hadn't healed fully, so I had to kind of duct tape the whole review section together. 😆 It all turned out fine in the end though! Thanks for checking it out man!
Thanks for your tutorial! Awesome results 😃
My pleasure! 🙏😎
A great app/plugin indeed. The thing that takes away my excitement though, is the ‘subscription model’. I can’t stomach it. It’s not an application anymore. It’s ’live service’ and companies should use that term to begin with. Thank you for the demo.
My pleasure! I can understand you. It seems more and more companies are moving towards this model. I guess it has something to do with staying competitive and sustaining a software’s “release, fix, update, release” cycle. However, with this one you can buy the software outright for a lifetime license. I think subscription models get a bit pricey over time, and I usually opt to get lifetime licenses when they’re available. I’m kind of torn though because it is obvious they put a great deal of passion and effort into the software. I think they’re targeting a very specific set of people; enthusiasts and professionals who absolutely need to reproduce this kind of look. It’s a great set of tools, and I had a blast working with it.
Can you save stroke profiles in the Ipad version??? Found the answer at 33:10...thank you!!!😊😊😊
My number one requested feature. There's talk of an entirely redesigned storke studio/line drawing system possibly coming down the pike at some point. For now though, we have to use styles instead. Thanks for watching! 🍻

@slide-se Having kind of a dilema. Other than streaming, making content is tough.I've actually been working on a one-shot comic project. I decided to just step away for a while. Didn't feel right to make half hearted content and I am spending the little free time I do have to work on my project. I want to draw some 2D plans for woodworking projects and although I love using Sketchup for 3D designs it's not the best or easiest to use for drawing or printing out 2D designs. I really wish Affinity would add a simple protractor feature like the one in Sketchup! However your protractor will be perfect for my needs now along with the pen tool, so glad I found your video...thank you!
Hey! My pleasure. I hope it will serve you well. I also wish there were more traditionalist tools within the suite. I would love to see both rulers and protractors that we can manipulate on screen; something similar to the ruler that is already available in apple notes. I really like the way they implemented that. Anyhow, thanks for the kind words and for watching the video! Enjoy.
Thanks for the unboxing. I'm also thinking of switching from xppen to this tablet. I was looking forward to hearing your secret technique for making the tablet's surface less smooth???? My tablet's surface has gotten smooth and now I have chips on it that feel like potholes. I did try one of those rough protective covers but they feel terrible. Textured but too smooth... Sometimes I wonder if there's something I can spray on it to help bring back that nice friction again
Yes! heheh - I accidentally forgot to talk about that as I was so excited about the tablet. Well, here it is, and it’s really no big deal. It’s just something that has worked for me pretty well. Although, I have to admit that I haven’t been using this technique with my current tablet, as I really like the drawing surface. BTW I’m in the process of putting together a review for it, but it won’t be out until the middle of November. I’m just really busy with other projects at the moment. Basically, depending on the size of the tablet you pick up, you can find an ipad sketch film that will cover the active area. You can apply it the same way you would if you were applying it to the ipad. It’s 100% removable, and did not damage my tablet. Before I sold it, I was using an iPad pro sketch film in conjunction with my XP-Pen Decor Pro M for the last few months. Not only did it protect the tablet, but it also offered a better drawing surface. I was using a Korean brand from a company called Rorentech. I’m not sure where you are on the globe, but trust me you do not need to get a Paperlike or any other inordinately expensive film like that. There are many I have tried that are great and last a good long while. A simple PVC film with a little tooth is enough. If I’m not mistaken, I should also mention that XP-Pen does make PVC film covers for their tablets, but they are pricey. However, I hear they’re pretty thick and last a long time. Not sure about their performance; mixed reviews there. Anyway, the film I was using was cheap. It was only $8.00. You can run a google search for it and see if you can order some cheap Rorentech iPad Sketch Film. At first It’s was really frustrating because, I didn’t wanna give up that tablet. I just wanted another pen. However, XP-Pen didn’t offer any other pens that would work with the XP-Pen Deco Pro M except for the PA-1. I think this was done on purpose because they knew they were developing their Gen 2 Deco and Artist models along with their new pen tech and doubled pressure capability. Once I drew on the Artist Pro 14 at the Seoul Illustration fair it hit me, and I realized why they’d neglected the Gen 1 series. I really liked the design of the Deco Pro, but I get it. They have to make money. - So yeah. That was my secret. I just used sketch film for an iPad pro to cover the active area. It really gave a great toothy surface to draw on. Thanks for watching the video! I hope this helps!
sup foster. great work. I would've never tried this in publisher...wow goes to show the versatility . where can we get the macros ?
Indeed! Long time no see make it happen! If you have the Quick Kit they're included in the kit! These are the 5.5 version which hasn't been added to the kit yet, but it's essentially the same exact library just a few useful little utility macros thrown in. Still working on expanding the kit; might even be renaming it soon. - However, if you have the kit - everything you see here in this video is there! Thanks for checking out the video!
Yo! - I almost forgot. If you wanna pick up the kit use this code at check out. MAKEITHAPPEN It's just for you! Thanks for hanging out in the chat before. 🍻
Haha! Sorry about the quality of video! Seems I didn't upload it early enough for the HD version to finish before I premiered! Ah well, we had a good time anyway. Hope you guys enjoy the HD version when it finally goes up! Take care all!
I have affinity publisher 2 for iPad and don’t see anywhere the ability to use brushes like you are. Are they only available in desktop versions ? Hope your voice gets better and thank you for your content!
It’s designer in Publisher. (Top left on publisher, where the orange icon is tap that and designer icon is in there, tap that and the tool should come up. However you have to owner designer for that to happen.) I’m curious how your Pub 2 is running on an iPad? Cause mine just keeps crashing I keep losing work, so I’m done with it on iPad. 😅😂
@@nomakslicerthank you so much I do own all affinity products and that worked! I will let you know if publisher crashes on me - I am just a hobbyist so may not be using it to full capacity and am still new to publisher.
Oh! That’s because I customized my tool docs for each persona. To customize your tool docs go to View → Customize Tools - From there you can choose which tools to have in the doc. I took out everything I didn’t need and arranged each doc for each persona. - It’s another reason why I love working in Publisher. - You can always reset it if you wanna change it, and If I open up Designer or Photo separately, the original docs are still there. - So it’s great.
hey hey Nomak! Hope all is well. Thanks for dropping by and checking out the video.
