Австралия
Добавлен 28 дек 2023
The Red Quills is a mapmaking channel that is created and operated almost exclusively by Ryan, who draws the maps and narrates the videos. We started on the 1st January 2024, and we're growing really well, trying to share some mapmaking joy around for others with fantasy worlds that they want to stand out.

Perfect Length Ryan, and great content.
Glad it's hitting the targets!
Page layout and combining images with text is an underrated skill - I can't even describe it, but I can see it appreciate it <3
I appreciate YOU! 🙏
Candle budget is poppin, hell yeah
That's what I spend all my RUclips income on
I can't for the life of me find your background music--- can you share where you got it? The credited source returns zero results online lol
Ah, I had it made specifically by a colleague of mine! It's the Red Quill's own music
@RedQuills Very fancy! Talented colleague too- keep up the awesomeness 😎👍(been stealing tips from your channel for a while now lol)
I love your style for the outside maps - with the paint pens and the fineliners on top! How did you come up with it?
It's a simple style that means into the strengths of both mediums: high contrasting but blocky coloured shapes for the paints, with the details added by the fine liners! It works to let your mediums tell you what they can do best
Hey, there's no Pokemon here!
It's only metaphorically 🥲
These sorts of hazards are great! I once ran a dungeon where the lowest level was filled with carbon dioxide, it created a fun challenge/puzzle for the players to get around.
Sometimes combat can get a little monotonous! This keeps things spicy
Love this idea! Thanks for sharing the maps. 👍🏼
Thank YOU for watching!
Ohhh thats beautiful Maps in that sort of style will always be my favourite
That's incredible
😂😂
And your art skills dont forget that
Nice!!
Subscribed, this is absolute fire
Thats so cool and detailed! Im sure this channel will get rlly big
Make a map of your exact position on planet earth frfr
Aw heck yeah!
How does this video only have 99 likes!?! I’m happy to be your 100th like. Amazing content!
Yay! More likes!
👾
Perfect amount of time to watch. Thank you!
I've got you, bro
U should make a 3d map
No but I actually want to learn how to do this 😭
I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but I do have full-length tutorials 🤷
Yeah he does go watch them they're great
Very nice. Although I have to admit that, after reading the title about "a goblin adventure," I was hoping to have an adventure for goblins (meaning goblin PCs).
I have misled you, and I'm as disappointed by my lack of vision as you are
@@RedQuills : you always do great work, and maybe an adventure for goblins was too much to ask. Still. . . who knows what the future may hold!
Love this! Super cool to see it coming together like that!
@@jonhaynie1987 If I'm honest, neither did I!
Great use of paint markers. They are often underestimated for their versatility.
@@michaelanderson2166 Thank you - I've been very impressed!
I really love the look of the markers with that cutout in the hill, what do you call that style?
@@joannalusty4694 I couldn't say - it is the style I need it to be!
I love this adventure! Honestly though you had me at goblins. I would be interested to see what other things you can do with them that isn't the standard cannon fodder that goblins are normally used for.
I love goblins! I promise I'll do them more in future
Phew, is that a faint smoke coming from the tea? My biggest fear was that it was running cold 😅
It always starts nice and warm, but it's cold by the time I drink it!
I love the little self-contained adventure built into the map and situation itself; plot hooks are well and good, but I think a hallmark of good roleplay design is it inspires the players to be nosy in a self-directed sort of way, and can work well no matter what direction the players approach the situation from.
The mark of a good adventurer is that they FIND adventure, rather than having it thrust upon them, I agree. No insult meant to Bilbo Baggins and his ilk!
@@RedQuills The problem I have is that the players are so used to playing video games that they don't recognize subtlety, so I have to use the big hammer.
@michaelanderson2166 I think all DMs have to deal with that a little bit at the moment - I find it comes up most in dialogue. I think having prescribed options for dialogue limits the awareness of how many outcomes there can be for roleplay
Good job as usual! I definitely take some ideas out of this 😎. If you ever want to try alcohol markers in the futur, give a try the brand Hohuhu. They are as good but a lot less expensive than Copics.
Thanks for the recommendation! Once these ones are used up, I'll branch out to other brands: the colours are a little limited for my projects.
Hello! 😃 I don't run dnd like games but I really appreciate how you formulate your thoughts on how to make the adventure interesting. I'll try to combine different kinds of dangers in the future. Thanks for the video, it's always a pleasure to see your art!
Thank you for watching! It's great to get such feedback
You did not look like what I was expecting not an insult though you look great
You flirt
😉
5 years?! lets reach the end of the year first? :P
Damn, agreed
My 5 year plan is to get good
Nothing wrong with a little get good
This is really exciting news! Stoked
Thanks, Koopa! Stoked to be here
It's been great watching this channel grow over the past few months. I count myself lucky that I found it. Looking forward to what's next!
Thank you! 🙏 It means a lot
I love the new face videos! And the audio quality isn't too bad, but I think that a dedicated microphone would do a little better. Keen for the atlas!
Thank you! I'll be getting a new adaptor for a mic I currently have - ideally to create some live videos at some point!
Beautiful work! Instant sub. Can't wait to dig into the archive and see what you have released so far. Also excited to see the updated Atlas!
Welcome aboard, it's great to have you!
Great stuff here...keep it coming
Thank you, will do!
Just a random visitor here: I don't think you need to use the switching camera positions as much as you do around 2:30 and 5:20. I find your tone and way of speaking very calm (and fitting the video topic!), so a steady camera angle would make it feel more consistent.
That's very fair: it's a new format for me, so I appreciate the feedback.
The "so" at 0:10 sounded like a true german starting a conversation or leaving a party 😆
I'll take this in the complimentary spirit that it was obviously given in, and start and end all conversations in this way from now on!
This channel is a real creative inspiration for me
Thank you! I'm really glad!
Ooooh, do a globe next. You could use super sculpy or something.
A globe! Great idea!
I'm boring. I use a free tile program and a bunch of personally made, but simple 16×32 isometric tiles and slap them together to make my continent map. There's slightly transparent blue water tiles, green plains tiles, and forest tiles and mountain (foothills and peaks) tiles. And road tiles in four directions for all types. All my city tiles are unique at least. Then I zoom in a level (by changing maps) with incredibly simple wall/rock/brick tiles for walls and only add additional layers for details like tall grass/flowers and NPC/objects. Using the basic 4 pixel steps for 3D sets outdoors. Campaign map grid is usually 64×64 and i design the location tiles on an extremely rushed just before the game night basis. 😅 So far most of my players appreciate the very rough but interactive updating live references for out games. I even had two of my players offer to draw their and other party member characters facing more than one direction. Instead of simply using a direction marker for their character. It's worked well over zoom.
Hey, any method that works well for the creator and the players is a good method. Aesthetic is secondary to function!
Congrats on the milestone! I am super excited to see the atlas! As an adventure writer, I would love to hear what you think about releasing maps in a commercial license. Some patreons do that at their highest tier. Of course that there are pros and cons and some creators prefere not to.
It's something I've been considering - but I want to grow my audience a little more before I choose one way or another!
I'm keen for those adventure modules! I love you're worldbuilding and would love to play a campaign in your world.
Get ready for next week!
Awesome length. Although... I dunno if I'm ready to see a face for those talented hands! Congrats on 5000 subscribers. Hope there's some token recognition coming your way for your good work.
The next few will be around 10 mins, and we'll see how they go! Keeping your request in mind
@@RedQuills I'm looking forward to it!
