Fostex TH-900 w/X00 Ear Pads | Updated Review & Comparison to Stock TH-900 and TH-X00
***CHECKPOINTS***

- 9:26 : Soundstage & imaging

After coming to the conclusion that I preferred the stock Fostex TH-X00 to the top-of-the-line TH-900, I've explored the possibility of swapping its earpads for the TH-X00's in order to fix tonality.
In today's video, we will be looking at the sonic changes that have been brought by this modification. Are they positive or negative? If positive, are they even worth it? Join me in this updated comparison to find out.
Enjoy!

how much did they charge back then to get the removable cable mod done ? my th-x00 is amazing but the cable is just not it
so the manufacturer ships out q 1000dollars headphones with the wrong pads and charges 90dollars for a replacement one hahahaha what a joke
Nice. Thanks. Love the TR-X00
You can and should EQ the headphone. I am on TH X00 mahogany and fixed all their in balances using the help of Pratory1990 measurement for basic guide. there isn't a headphone on earth that is perfect in balance. once you EQ it, its perfect. everything is even and no range shadow any other and no vacuum areas anywhere to be found.
How to get started eqing
Get the Denon D7200 and you'll never go back to Foxtex TH series headphones
yes. but! forget about parts availability once your warranty runs out. Denon will cut you loose. Not Fostex.
Denons are just fostex designed headphones denon slapped their name on
Awesome review mate, I’m getting a pair of thx00 for Christmas and was thinking maybe they’d be lacking compared to the th900 but after watching this I’m more confident that may not be the case. Cant wait to get them even more now!
They stopped producing the thx00.
Great video, man! I have a pair of TH-900s that I'm trying to fix the treble on, and I've cycled through different pads without much success. I'll try the TH-610s and see what happens!
what happened?
@@dougleydorite, Still ear-piercing treble, lol. The best I managed to do was use the DCA Alpha Dog pads. The treble was mostly tamed, but not enough.
@@virindersandhu3218 That sucks. I just got the new 2021 LCD-X and there is no bass. Have you heard anything that has good bass like the th900 or is it in a league of its own?
@@dougleydorite If you're looking for powerful bass, I don't think I've heard anything as big as the TH900. I haven't listened to the Sony MDR-Z1R myself, but I've heard that those are have pretty strong bass. Denon also sells their D5200/D7200/D9200 series. I tried their D7200 with ZMF pads and I thought the sound was good, but the headband was really painful for me. Other than that, I haven't found anything :P. Let me know if you stumble across something!
@@virindersandhu3218 I stumbled across the Monolith Portable and it is outstanding with my 58x. Kind of a side note.. just go buy one!! (If you’re into portable)
I recently bought the TH-900 and didn’t like the sound for most of the songs I played on them and I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why. I said “most” because one particular song I played on them was stunning and quickly became one of my favorite songs just from the interpretation that the TH-900 gave. This video explains why I didn’t like the TH-900 for the most part and why it was amazing for one particular song. Great video!
Was this the MK1?
@@vvidover yes
Best review of TH-X00 vs. TH-900 I`ve seen so far. Being your first amazes me!
You ever get a chance to try the Ebony's?
I am former user asgard 2 / jotunheim now is THX 789.I think the treble issue is partly came from asgard. Schiit amps sound more v -shape than 789. I owned X00 mahogany. I borrowed TH-900mk2 recently. I am saving up for TH-900mk2 now :-p The recessed mid is still there.but that doesn't bother me.I use Z1R when I need mids.
With all that money you've sunk for these forgettable products, you could've easily afford a stack Omega /sr007 and 727/007 that would blow these thousands miles away, or even a jade2 will do.
Does it sounds like a slight improvement over the ath m50 ??
Wonderfully detailed and understandable/relatable review-cum-comparison! Keep it up!
Great review! You should do more.
Does anyone have a link for "Udis"? Not sure how you spell the name...?
Can you tell me from where I got these mod ports for the changeable cable? You will help me allot. I have broken cables on my TH-900 direct on the cups two times. I don´t want to solder them to often.
One of the best reviews I’ve seen. Surpasses Z, Joshua, DMS and more.
Man I you did a great job with this review! Very competent. I hope to see more in the future
Great review ! I feel like I’m buying one
Could you also make a video on TH-X00 with TH-900 pads? I currently own TH-X00 and I"m wondering if it's worth it to try TH-900 pads for sound stage / imaging improvements.
Did you end up doing it? Results?
@@Nikulogical Yes I did try! TH-900 pads while having bigger hole which also reduced bass quantity and bass extension. Sound stage might have gotten bigger but I wasn't too sure. So overall it was not worth the trade off. I've since sold the TH-X00 so this is based off memory and I could be wrong, but I remember out of all the pads I've tried the original pad still sound the best. Anything else just butchered the sound. Though if you really want pad with bigger ear hole for comfort then TH-610 pad is not too bad (changes sound though, but better than most other pads). Hope this helps.
@@FusionMusic thanks for replying. I may try it with attenuation rings as I think that may fix the sound issues.
@@Nikulogical Oh yeah attenuation ring do improve bass/sub bass, though I still find TH900 pads + attenuation ring the tonality doesn't sound natural overall. Though if you already have the ear pads then it's worth giving it a shot.
great review!
Verry good job dude thanks for this video.
I blind tested the TH-900 with both pads (I used the EMU Teak pads, similar to the x00.) for 2 whole days. I could hear no difference. The only difference was the stock TH-900 pads were far more comfortable, so I switched them back. But clearly you and many people like Tyll hear a difference, surely you are being honest and I do believe you, 100%. So what is going on here? Many have noted differences like this in audio before that others could not detect. I suspect it has to do with our brains and sound perception.
Hey How does the Bass in the th900 compare with the Bass in Sony xb950 or ultrasone 900 pro, because I want to get one of the three
I own a pair of TH-900's and a pair of Sony MDR-Z7, so not exactly the comparsion you are looking for but close. The Z7''s I had are modded, damping the cups mostly, and have a more sluggish bass but much warmer mids. The treble and highs are rolled off, so it has a really relaxed sound. This is sorta of Sony's house-sound in general. If I didn't have the 900's, I would have far more positive feelings toward the Z7s. They are great but nothing compared to the TH-900s after a few tweaks. The TH-900s really need different pads (Brainwavz HM5, Dekoni, ZMF pads, etc.) and the right amp to come alive. I originally had them on a fairly bright amp/dac with stock pads and hated what I was hearing. Treble was way too harsh. I went to a more neutral to warm amp, Questyle, and that combined with some new pads completely changed my mind on them. They are by far my favorite of the headphones I own now (HD650s, Sony Z7, Audeze LCDs, etc.). Their imaging and soundstage is on point, and the quickness, accuracy, and heaviness of the bass is not something you can get in many other headphones. Hopefully that gives you an idea. Yes, the TH-900s are incredible, but they take some work to get there.
What are the best Headphones for you overall?
check out dekoni pads very good
I understand why you keeping the TH-900 with the replacement pads, as your getting the best of both stock headphones in one. But as someone who doesn't already have the TH-900, it sounds like it's not worth an additional 1K for them.
Would of been nice if you would of added a link the the removable cable modders. How much less expensive is the other guy? Honestly, it would have to be a HUGE difference to get me to go back to an SMC connector YUCK! Everyone complained about those things for years, now we're voluntarily adding them to our headphone! :-/
What were the names of the modders? I know PeterEK has an Etsy store where he offers various mods(username thePETEREK)
@@fatpaws I searched for this guy on ETSY and I can no longer find him :(
honestly up until now you are the best/honest headphone reviewer i have seen.
How did you get detachable cables?
bigshoe84 Cut The Cable.....attach the cable to the female jack....secure jack to cup.
Joe Rico Sounds simple 😳
Nice breakdown. I'd be interested in your opinions on the common mid-fi options, stuff like hd600/650, dt770/880, and shure 15/1840 as well. Keep it up!
Nice review mate, I liked the way you start by describing the audio equipment and the process you used. A review on your Schiit audio gear would be something to look forward to.... (If you haven't already that is)
Yeah boi You should still send me th900.
Eudis Taveras Biodyna Lord
Sonic Rift I think you need to try my Frankenstein THx00 biodyna
Eudis Taveras if there is one headphone I would love to review, Franken X00 would be it.
Hey dude, your second upload is a second masterpiece video from your channel. Keep up the good work!
Charles Bouchard Thank you so much for the support, hope you'll also enjoy the upcoming reviews!
shut up gaylord
but yeah keep up the good work
did you try the Purple Hearts ? I like a fun pair but I'm stuck between the thx00 and the thx00 ph
some say it's slightly more V shape (the PH that is) and it's more close to the th-900 but smoother .. would like Sonic rift to make a comparison of the cans since this video was the best one that compared the th00000000 series.
Thanks a lot for your comment, Aron. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to audition the TH-X00 PH, but apparently it is a more V-shaped can than the mahogany. If anyone would be willing to send me theirs, I would be glad to compare but I don't have a large enough audience. I can absolutely vouch for the mahogany X00 as a fun headphone though. It is one of the few bass-heavy headphones out there with *great* bass, while retaining adequate midrange and treble performance. I personally found the TH-900 with stock X00 pads (EX-EP-50) to be slightly better (video coming soon), but it is a much more expensive option and most wouldn't find the cost justifiable.
Hey, waddup. Subscribed
Eudis Taveras awesome, thanks for watching
good review do more
ImWagon absolutely will, I appreciate your feedback!
Video is too quiet
Jason Carpenter will fix that next time, thanks!
