UPRR HEARTLAND BIG BOY TOUR 9:09 SD 480p
I setup along the Indiana Harbor Belt Line at W. 115th St. I had planned to meet up with several friends at Riverdale. Traffic lights, traffic lights, those lights versus UP 4014, Big Boy was the winner. Headed south on S. Halsted St. and crossed the Harbor's yard, I noted cars leaving the road along the north side of the yard. Looking east I was surprised, UP 4014 and its consist was almost gone. I quickly phoned my friends, told them to quickly run to the tracks and get their pictures, Big Boy was moving fast. At W. 144th St. I found a spot at the crossing. Big Boy was stopped. It moved in yard speed, 6 mph. My next planned setup was along the N. Woodlawn Ave. in South Holland, Big Boy ...

I've been told this was the blizzard of 1999. It snowed constantly. 3200 series equipment was assigned to the Green line. At Clark/Lake we watch as a Brown line train reloading the Loop.

ARMITAGE TOWER SD 480p

A great friend, the late Pete Vesic, invited me up into his "office" at Armitage tower so that I could video the 4-track north side mainline. Thousands of passengers see this tower daily, only a few people get to see it on the inside.

More views of the CTA Rail System. Cars are 2400, 2600, 3200 series. Shown is the cleared lots at Wilson. On the south side, 18th St. shows three lines, Green, Orange, and Red.

Cars 1892 and 1992 are currently stored at IRM with an uncertain future. They are supposedly going to be used as parts for the museum’s operational pair, but time will tell if they’ll be scrapped or not.
While this car is stuffed and mounted in a museum (on loan per the CTA), at least Northwestern Elevated 24 now runs at IRM.
I love how the 5-50 series train approaches the station at 6:50.
Oh, golly, I must have taken this train several thousand times to and from UIC. Ah, the memories... and the soul-destroying ten hours a week on public transportation.
Thanks so much for this. I grew up riding the 6000 series L trains
I remember when the Oscar Mayer Company was up there and Cooley High was just being torn down
Was that the 2000 series you were on? I was listening to the doors open and close
Yep, this is when i was riding the Evanston Express and i was living in Evanston at the time
I made history by riding the first sb train into the new tunnel from Howard st to 95th st and back to Washington and State and took another sb train to Ashland/63rd, trains going both ways that day. It was fun.
I remember when 63rd st was a "A" train stop. Garfield Blvd-55th st was a "B" train stop
I remember seeing and riding the Evanston Express cars on the Dan Ryan line when we had that deep freeze and snowstorm. I was still in high school and yes i had to ride them!
I remembered when i rode past the Wilson St shops and they just put that fire out, I was on the Jackson Park Howard L riding to Washington/State station.
I rode the 2000 series on the Evanston Express, the former West-northwest 6000 series and i rode the early 6000 series flat door cars with trolley poles on top too
I miss riding the 5-50 series and the 6000 series on the Evanston Express
Renovations years for each CTA Line Green Line - 1995-98 Blue Line Douglas Branch (Pink Line) - 2001-05 Red Line Dan-Ryan - 2002-05 Brown Line - 2006-09 Purple Line includes - 2007-10 Blue Line Grand to O'Hare - 2011-15 Blue Line Forest Park Branch - 2023-27 Rebuilding Sections: Red Line Howard Branch - 2021-25
this gotta be after 2004
No, in the 90's.
@@msibnsf yeah but the overhead on top of the 3200 series look like 2005-07
@@Nvideofilmsproductions I don't understand. The tops of 3200, look like today, 2005, 1990's. They don't change....except the former Yellow line cars. They are the roof boards.
26:59 this is the same clip from the other clip
I ran the Centennials in 1984.
Not going to say I wish I knew what it was like to ride on the Boston El but it's a big step forward to get this line underground.
Rehab 2600-series......1999 or 2000? Some 2600-series cars still unmodified
Wilson burned down in 1996? Library wasn't opened til 1997? OPTO Purple was June 1997. I'm guessing this was spring 1997. Some red line 2600s aren't OPTO ready yet
What year did they recorded the lines?
I was unaware that they actually ran proper express trains that actually skip stations. Shame that the purple line now stops at most stations it passes by
Planned pans on 3200-series cars? 🤔
Yes. There were three types of 3200's......the ones with no roof boards....ones with roof boards.....ones with fixtures for roof board but none ever added.
1997 or 1998? Love seeing the 2600-series BELLY CARS on the Red line. David, I'm sure you had to have seen me running motor sitting in the tower. Did you have control of that old school destination sign that faced SB motor people?
That was Pete Vesic.
What years are these videos from? Thank you! You rock!!
1999.
Love how you captured the CRIME TAPE early in the video...HC 3047. I've tried to explain this idea to employees hired after 2002
I love your vintage CTA videos.
How many cars does the Yellow Line run with now? Is it still a cozy ride?
Two cars as always.
I wonder if the 3rd rails were de-energized while everyone was walking about.
Power still on. Employees are careful.
@@msibnsf Thanks for your response!
You would imagine so. CTA considered the high liability of injury. They would never allow any untrained person to be walking around energized rails!

When this was taken
We can assume the late 90s

There's a typo in the title of the post
Even me misspelled things. I converted and started my journey to teach the world......'L' or "L".
The K3LA Was nice, but doesn’t really suit it.
Do u have clips from 2006 when the pink line opened?
In 2024 Chicago l changed a lot
Who's the guy on the PA at Paulina Jct? Was that Pete Vesic?
Modell used to run that Block 🚫.
The 6000s. The finest railcars of the CTA fleet.
Were these All-Electric cars? (Philly Railfan here) I'm suspecting they were. Next, were they all Skokie cars?
All CTA revenue cars are all-electric cars. No air brakes. The 5-50 PCC cars were mixed up....Skokie, Evaston, Ravenswood, West-Northwest cars.
Notice the heavy 24 hours gridlock on the Kennedy Expressway. It can be even like during the hours of 2AM-5AM!!!!!
These cars used components from PCC cars. They are not PCC cars.
Any cars that is using PCC technology is PCC. Robinrosenberg9065, your definition is DO STRICT. The "PCC" ("Presidents' Conference Committee") originated from the design committee formed in 1929. It was renamed the "Electric Railway Presidents' Conference Committee" (ERPCC) in 1931. The group's membership consisted primarily of representatives of several large operators of U.S. urban electric street railways plus potential manufacturers. Three interurban lines and at least one "heavy rail", or rapid transit, operator-Chicago Rapid Transit Company-were represented as well.
Howard Station looks crap
This was taken in the 90s Howard Station looks better now.
44:02 WTF why the doors are open?
The train pictured is not in service. It is going to the yards at 51st St.

this is my worst year for holiday train for 2023
A motorman of mine NB Belmont/Red; Mr Lindsey Carney...RIP
Must be Jan-Mar of 1997. Purple and Red line equipment not OPTO ready yet. 2 car Purple line trains in snowstorm when cta wasn't afraid that employees wouldn't know how to operate in snow
