I remember Kolakowski from around 1983 when his magnum opus "Currents of marxism" (?) was en vogue. Maybe he was a great intellectual but he certainly is not a great speaker: quite boring to listen to, his frequent coughing directs the attention away from what he is saying, and his English vocabulary is not what you might expect from an Oxford professor, even when English is not his first language. But maybe it's just his pronunciation; I couldn't listen to a two-hour lecture by him.

This interview is a beautiful companion piece to his 1979 film "Camera Buff". The film says everything he's saying here and more while completely flying over the censor's heads because of how cleverly crafted the message is. A shame the same trick dazzles some viewers today. More of them should watch this interview.

For those from the west who aren't taught about this period (intentionally), the camps of Romania were some of the most brutal. Every disgusting horror movie that came out of Hollywood in the last 10 years, pales in comparison to what was actually done to so many people. Searching for 'anti-humans' you will find a book / pdf of some of the descriptions. Saint of the Prisons is a wonderful book as well, on the modern martyrs of Orthodoxy during this period, as well as lessons learned for us in these dark times. Despite the brutality of the torture (which effected apostacy and going mad), most returned after some time to Christ - it was too "blunt." In contrast, to the subtle-seduction of the west and consumerism/materialism, we apostacize all on our own. New-Martyrs of Romania, pray to God for us!

The interviewer never shows himself, he is not interested in the nuances of Polish history and the master's views on it, instead pushing for the simplified agenda of the horrors of communism. This is not doing justice to the very fine and subtle thinker that Kolakowski was.

I really do not understand why he was regarded as such a high-profile "expert" on communism? He was so utterly wrong with all his predictions. Especially he -- as all communists always would do -- heavily unterrated the power of nationalism, to such an absurd degree of not even mentioning its mere existence. So, he hardly was an "expert".

Wäre er auch ebenso kritisch zum Realen Sozialismus in der DDR und im Ostblock eingestellt gewesen, er wäre zum Helden avanciert. Das Dilemma Schnitzlers: hellwacher, unbestechlicher Verstand, aber blind auf einem Auge. Nie ein Wort der Kritik an die Parteiriege. Ich denke, er wird unmöglich so naiv gewesen sein zu glauben, dass die Partei immer Recht hat und in der DDR alles zum besten bestellt ist. Dafür war er zu schlau. Aber charakterlich leider zu unreif oder einfach nur: feige.
