This may well have been the most popular version at the time it came out. It is lovely. I had not heard it before. Dietrich's is better known now.

The most popular version was for sure from Lale Andersen, who recorded the song in 1939. When it was played by „Radio Belgrad“, it became popular on both sides of the fronts. It was played by front radio stations right before the end of transmisson at 22:00 CET. Alone the german original version by Andersen sold 2 million records and was the first „million-seller“ in german history at all.

Hello from the Netherlands! Interesting version. Song with emotions. Favorite song of both the Germans and the Allies. Translated into many languages. A song whose lyrics were written in 1915 by the German soldier Hans Leip from the poem Das Lied eines jungen Soldaten auf der Wacht. The song, recorded in 1939 by Lale Andersen, became a big hit only when it was played daily at a certain time on the Belgrade radio for German soldiers at the front from 1941. Allied troops were also able to tune in to the Belgrade radio and soon noticed it. Since then, the song has been covered frequently, including by Marlene Dietrich. I also played this beautiful song on my harmonica. It's far from perfect, but it comes from the heart. Please critisize! ruclips.net/video/b6NmtkQSFPw/видео.html This is my general list: ruclips.net/p/PLU5c7_PpNso3kFO3dvhaR2ecGggbg9d4b
