The River Cabin: Owl house, Outhouse, & Propane Tanks
Winter is approaching and I need to get a few projects wrapped up. I have to get the owl house up in a tree, so hopefully I can get some owls living in it. The propane tanks need to be pulled off the ground before it's frozen. And last, but not least I want to paint outhouse interior to make it a little more pleasant. It's dirty in there, so a little white paint would go a long way to make it nicer.

The River Cabin: Cracks, Cracks, and More Cracks
Просмотров 38014 дней назад
A foundation wall is shifting away from the cabin. It's been poorly covered up with roofing tar since I bought the place. Because of that and other water issue, the floor is cracking all over the place. With winter approaching, I want to stabilize the wall before more water and ice get in there. I'm afraid it might push the wall out which would cause further damage to the floor.
What Does it Feel Like Waking Up in the Cabin 6 Month Later?
Просмотров 301Месяц назад
This is what the cabin looks like after 6 months of progress. I can't say this enough...the cabin feels completely different. I woke up in phase 2 feeling clean, refreshed, and excited for what's to come. At this point I have a working wood stove, a dry floor, and there are no mice staring at me. It actually is starting to feel like a rustic backpackers shelter.
The Cabin gets new Sill Plates and a Burn Barrel
Просмотров 381Месяц назад
The cabin finally gets new sill plates which means it might not fall over now! This is one of the best feelings in a long time. Seeing brand new pressure treated wood all around the ends is incredible. On top of that I finally got a burn barrel so I can burn the rotted wood and stay working longer.

    The battle with water!! Gutters are good. I'd also add slope around entire perimeter for sure. French drain could be necessary, I added a couple around my cabin and it works very well keeping water away from the foundation.

    Have you had the water tested? If so, why was it not potable? Was there bacteria or pollutants or heavy metals? Thanks for the updates. Cabin is coming along well.

      I did actually get to test it and thankfully it passed. However at one point it had a little orange tint to it. Iron is common in the area I believe, but it also could have been from the pipe. I'm not sure yet and would like to get it flowing more regularly.

    Thanks for the update. What kind of siding are you putting on the inside? Tongue and groove would look amazing, but expensive. Drywall is a pain in the butt, messy and dusty, but cheap. Shiplap would add to the structural integrity of the cabin.... Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you decide. It's gonna be a beautiful getaway.

    If you have one mouse, you have at least 2. They seem to travel in pairs. I'll stick with the old school spring traps. I don't want to have to deal with the same mouse more than once.

    Looking good just remember Rome wasn’t built over night. One step at a time. Don’t think you will ever get rid of the mice. Being out there in the woods you may control them but they will find a way inn. Thanks for taking us along

      @BokenUp 3 месяца назад

      I have no doubt you're right on the mice. I have to try to close up two gaps next time. They're so big due to wood rot and shifting they basically treat the place like their personal hotel 😄

  • @Jeremy_936
    @Jeremy_936 3 месяца назад

    Looks great. Beautiful piece of land too. A large woodstove could probably heat that entire place, especially if you leave some of the rooms "open plan." Also, what about driving a new sandpoint well? They're not too expensive. Not sure how high the water table is though. You seem to be fairly high above the river, so maybe it's not feasible.... but I know that "Bushradical" and his wife drink the water directly from their sandpoint well. Check out their videos on sandpoint wells if you haven't seen them. Thanks for the update.

    I use a 2 stroke water pump like the Amish do. It pumps 250 feet and about 40 foot gain in height. We have 2 65 gallon blue barrels to store it in at camp. The length does help by warm the water some too.
