I think they use dry bricks.

I am from Pune Maharashtra. What a commendable work! This technique, perhaps, is not being used here. 1) The brick quality seems to be much superior. 2) The dome construction must have been done during winter. 3) The high quality cement mortar must have played an important role... A query, The grand hall of Bada Imambara might have been constructed using this technique. Please clarify.

I'd like to see this load tested with heavier things. People standing on the roof represent 1100 lbs to 2200 lbs respectively. So, 100, to 200 lbs per square foot (wild guess). The lamination of tiles it brilliant. I would not have ever thought of using paver bricks as construction material. Well done.

Could this dome resist earthquakes up to 8? I am guessing during an earthquake as the structure starts flexing it may lose it's integrity and collapse suddenly.

What is the materials used in between the bricks? What holds to each other?

Segmental vault with angle say 90 degree and 2.5 feet rise in a 18x12 feet room is more safe or a rohtak dome... Safe in terms earthquake considering Gujarat as our area is in high risk zone four.. which type of roof should be consider. Vault or rohtak dome..?

Hello Mr. Kakani, excellent sharing of this technique. I have been researching on how to build in my backyard in California a half dome of clay bricks of 6 feet diameter. I have been toying with the idea of using single layered bricks (8'x4'x2 1/4') or double thin brick(8'x4'x1 1/4'). These are the bricks available here locally. Would you happen to have build such a structure before and if so any suggestions. The dome would be part of a sitting height platform for sitting. Appreciate your suggestion in advance. (BTW i too am from Abad and curiously used to live in Ambawadi.)

Great job and appreciate the entire team, the research, thoughts, time, effort and all contributions to bring this ancient practice back to life. Some thoughts that passed through my mind as in ..the amount of cement used is really high..does this method really do justice to reduce carbon footprint? Steel was not used. Such roofs/ structures could have a longer serviceability than the ones we use steel.

If lime mortar was used this all hard work would have meant immensely With cement it just became ordinary Although I myself would have credited the masons with their names without doubt Nobody credits the masons these days 😂

You can even use quick cement. Thats more reliable.

This is, or was, commonly done in Mexico also. The major difference seems to be these rohtak domes are shallower than domes seen in Mexico. I live in Mexico and our home has to large cupolas, one round, one square serving as ceilings for two bedrooms. Just gorgeous.

So if the structure does fail, lets say due to an earthquake, does the entire structure collapse and thereby crushing everything below it? As concrete and brick absorb moisture, there by increasing the weight of the roof, is the roof top seal with tar, paint or other sealing method?
