7. How I make a living as a full time potter
This video discusses how I make a living as a full time potter. I run my own production pottery business and sell across many platforms. I have a fair few expenses with my business and i go through all of these in the first part of the video.
I then compare my monthly turnovers in December 2023 and February 2024.

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen about this topic! Thank you so much for making it!!
We absolutely love to share your videos and social media, etc with our Students ❤ Truly such informative and wonderfully curated info… thank you :)
Just a little tip for anyone interested, but when testing and firing a glaze that may run, we spread a dusting of Silica Sand or sometimes Alumina Hydrate on the kiln shelves to protect them and stop anything sticking :) Do you ever do the same @Charlottemanser? Wonderful video as always... thank you :)
Unless your firing at least a 100+ firings there is absolutely no reason to change your elements that often. Your thermocouple most times will go out before your elements do. If your firings are looking off I would start there.
Hello
Hello
Your studio is stuffed with all the items you made! Amazing. You really produce. Love Boo!
Wow! You have quite the business. Good on you! Thank you for sharing such a detailed evaluation. I have been trying to figure out if I can make a living with pottery. This gives me hope. About how many hours a week do you work? IT seems like you put out a lot of product. I am so glad you are making money!
Jaan
Hi jaan
came for the clay, staying for boo 🐶🐶
That was actually really helpful, even though I’m in the US and at a different place entirely in my as-yet-purely-aspirational ceramicist career. Thank you for breaking it all down.
Love The Work! Just found your channel. I have just started my channel also and appreciate the info. Looking forward to the future content.
Lovely big mugs, beautifully finished and nice rough texture - liked the first one so much I went back and ordered a second. These are the type of mugs I've been looking for.
Hi, I love your videos. Could you explain about your degree please? I’m starting my ceramics degree in September. I’m a lot older than you so super nervous of what it will entail. Would love some insight on it. Anything that I could do now to prepare before starting in September. Many thanks and please post more content if you can ❤
Hey there, I believe we might be able to explore similar synergies. I also work in the pottery business along with few other niches. Care to connect?
Charlotte, you are clearly a very experienced and knowledgable ceramicist. Can you please make a autobiographical video, or a video series, of your life within the context of ceramics? When and how you started creating with clay, describing your educational experience at University, the difficulties in deciding how to make a living after graduating in art, and where you see yourself 5 years into the future. I am a 26 year old ceramicist as well in California and would find your experiences and advice incredibly insightful as you are successful figure within our field. thank you and enjoy all your videos!
Aww thank you. I’ll definitely do a video about this soon!
@@CharlotteManserCeramics thank you!
Oh that last glaze! I mean I love them all really❤
Great videos. Just subscribed!
❤
This made me smile so much! 😊
❤❤❤
Looks so good!
Congratulations that's wonderful news.
Do you Esty adds? I find them expensive and not much return om costs
Hi! I have never paid for ads on Etsy and I’ve always charged a postage fee (even when Etsy nags me to offer free postage)
Thank you so much for making such a comprehensive video! This was so helpful
I love this! I’ve “pottered” for years and am considering making it my full time business. Thank you for the input! -Kirsten
How many pieces do you sell on Etsy to make 6000€ per month?
My products averagely are £25 a piece. This month I’ve had 140 orders and some (most) are multiple pieces
@@CharlotteManserCeramics thank you!! That’s a LOT of sales 🙌
why wouldn't you charge the customer all the postage fees? That's crazy spending that much a month for postage.
I charge £4.99 postage and postage cost is only £2.99. The rest covers packaging materials and fees. I sometimes buy the postage outside of the platforms I sell on but mostly through the apps so this payment is deducted before it gets to me
Happy to catch your video. I work in a two car garage with a couple of side buildings that have my kilns in. Some things are shared yet some words are so British, you remind me of Country Wood Girl.
Wow, what kind of wax resist did you use? Mine never runs off that fast and clean!
I use hot wax, paraffin wax and melt it in a dish on a portable hob :)
Clay pottery making
You can rent a full house for that, it's not cheap
Haha yes but commercial rent is more expensive than homes.
Thanks for this video! I have a shopify site but on the fence with Etsy...do you list different products on Etsy than you do on your website? Like one-of-a-kind things, I guess I'm asking about. I think I have fear around juggling between the two. Thanks again for sharing!
Hi! All of my products are listed on both my website and Etsy. I think having as many income streams is better than just one so even if you only sell a bit on Etsy, that’s still a bit more than shopify :)
@@CharlotteManserCeramics thanks so much!
I tried to find your Etsy but you don’t have any links in your videos or your profile. Just thought that would be a good idea to have.
Using an immersion blender for these smaller amounts is a life and time saver!!!!
This is sooo interesting. I’ve never heard of anyone renting pieces of pottery out!!! That’s such an awesome idea!!
Is there a reason you change the kiln elements every 4 months? I have never heard of anyone changing them that frequently! That seems like ALOT!! I really love how you did this video. It’s so informative and straightforward!!! 70 pounds every time you fire the kiln seems like soo much!! I’m in the US and it costs me on average about 6.00 and I have the same size kiln as your smaller one. That’s crazy how much of a difference there is.
Because they are fired about 100 times by that point and need replacing :) Thank you :)
I wonder how you made the decision to get staff? Do you feel like having employees makes you less connected to your work?
I decided to get staff to allow me to do the jobs I’m most skilled at, (throwing) and they can do the jobs that require less skill (packing orders and glazing). I also needed help. I definately don’t feel less connected as I’m still the maker and I am involved in every step of the process :)
@@CharlotteManserCeramics hey thank you for your reply! best of luck in your journey. Sounds like you're doing great.
That sounds like heavy duty wear on the klin elements...have you considered kiln upgrades?
@@angceramics That was very surprising to me as well. I know very large studios that fire. Their kilns every single day and they still don’t have to change their elements even close to that often. One place changes theirs on average of once every year.
@micheledickey4066 Maybe new kilns are on the list for the studio upgrade? I would think they'd be more economical to run also.
Could you do more videos on glazes please . Would love to see and hear all your knowledge . Also whats the green glaze in the thumbnail so cool ….. teach us recipes❤
This is so good, thanks for posting. I’m gonna start saving for a kiln in earnest now! 🙌🏻
Very cool 😎
Not sure how the algorithm got me here, but I am glad it did. You seems like a delightful person, your video quality is top notice, and your pottery looks fabulous. Please keep making content, you have a knack for it.
Wow, thank you!
What I would solely buy if I had to buy fresh pottery is 'Manser Waverthin Series'.
Thank you so much Charlotte for sharing your knowledge. It helps me as a new potter to get more insight into the business side of ceramics. I’m a true believer of abundance and that sharing will create even more abundance. Hope it makes sense to you, but basically just wanted to say I love following your journey and amazing work.
Just brilliant! Can’t thank you enough for your honesty, transparency and clarity. Thanks Charlotte for taking the time to share your knowledge…You’re a wonderful, creative grafter and a generous one at that! Wishing you an equally successful March x
You are so welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your lovely comment 😁🥰
Thanks for sharing your work and knowledge with us.
I watch a lot of pottery videos and your video was the best I have seen on the business of making pottery for profit. I'm a hobby potter and at my age have no intention of turning my hobby into a business but I do get excited when some one offers me money for my work. Great video and I hope you still get a buzz each time you make a sale 😊
Thank you so much ❤ not every hobby needs to be a business so keep enjoying your hobby ❤
Thanks for the video. I’d like to see a video on how you build up a following :)
Sure! Coming soon 😊😊
@@CharlotteManserCeramics thanks!
Thanks for your video! Keep it going 🎉🎉
