For those who don’t speak Spanish, here are some highlights from this interview with La Caballé: - Her debut was in Carnegie Hall, substituting for La Horne of all people. The reviews of the time were glowing, to put it mildly. One even said “Horne + Callas = Caballé. She received a standing ovation of close to 30 minutes, and a star was born. - Ms. Caballé says she’s a servant to the music and all credit goes to the composer. She’s incredibly modest. -One of her few diva moments was in Vienna, as she threw bouquet of flowers to the conductor who had the orchestra going at an impossible tempo. - She was personal friends with Maria Callas, who insisted on not being asked questions about singing, advising that Caballé should merely sing as she feels. Callas gave Caballé a pair of earrings, which the latter refused to ever wear out of reverence for Callas, who had worn them previously. - La Sutherland confessed to Caballé that she had to adapt Norma to her limitations, but she told Caballé that she should perform it as written, which the latter could. -She grew up rather poor, but her mother played piano, and her household was very musical, even if it required that they play other people’s instrument. -Providing for her family was a motivation for singing, as well as a vocation for music. She went to conservatory on a scholarship. - Pavarotti was her favorite tenor, as he seemed the most natural, as well as the most benevolent - a personal friend. - Caballé seems genuinely surprised by her own remarkable talent and the universal acclaim she receives - All her family vouches that she’s not only one of the all-time greats - she’s an incredibly kind, humble person - She laments that most theaters don’t hold the space for classical music that they used to at her peak. She observes, gently without intent of criticism, that there are no more great soloists in opera anymore. - She was personal friends with Freddy Mercury, who sought her to perform with her for the Barcelona Olympics. She remarks he was a lyric baritone, but that he refused to sing a duet from Norma because he refused to make a fool of himself or betray his audience by taking that on. After they sang together, he confessed that he wouldn’t make it to the actual olympics due to AIDS - and he didn’t. - Her husband was a tenor, but due to lung disease, he had to stop singing after a short but successful career. -When asked if she left anything undone or wishes she’d done anything differently, she remarks that she did right by music, but she wonders if she did right by her children as a mother. The interviewer comforted her, noting that successful women must do this service for one another due to societal expectations weighing so heavily. - Her daughter was studying to be a dancer, but after an accident, she found herself becoming a singer. The younger Montserrat says she’s aware that she is an earthling compared to her famous mother whose talents are of a higher realm (“another league, another galaxy”). When remarking on Caballé’s role as a mother, the younger Montserrat expresses understanding at having to share her famous mother, and her preternatural talent, with a world that needed her gift. - The interviewer is a pianist that Caballé admires. She’s excellent, gently correcting the modest diva when she doesn’t take proper credit for her contributions to the arts.

I'm here for Montserrat, of course, but I'd like to add that Ivo Vinco was my favorite Oroveso. Caballe and her husband, Bernabe Marti, performed ''Norma'' with Fiorenza Cossotto and her husband, Vinco, many times; I've never seen a video, though.
Wow, I didn’t know that her husband Bernard did Norma with her.
@@edithhenson6917 Lots of times. Bernabe was Pollione to Sutherland's Normal in Philadelphia before Montserrat sang the role. They traveled and performed together until Bernabe had a heart attack in San Francisco and retired to their ranch outside Barcelona in 1985.
