I'm Dan, the captain of this boat life journey, welcome aboard!
Life took an unexpected turn in 2021 when the waves of change led me to the look for a new voyage in life. My marriage sailed its course and I found myself yearning for a simpler, more meaningful existence.

Where Have I Been?!
Sorry all!
I have been on holiday, working a ridiculous amount and ill!
But I'm back, I'm almost back to full strength and I'm fully on board (pun intended) again.
Next one in a couple of weeks!
thanks
Dan

Heating system LEAK!! - Narrowboat Problems!
Просмотров 5505 месяцев назад
I filmed this months ago but I didn't want to be known as the leaky narrowboat guy! But yup - mid winter, iced up canal... I had heating problems... it was not good! Thankfully, I am not a quitter and I was determined to not let it stop me. I'd already experienced -4 degrees C so let's just get on with it! Thank you so much to Jay Wolfe Metalworks for being such absolute legends! www.shop4tanks...

Internet Woes Resolved? Kuma Connect Lite 4G for Boatlife
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.6 месяцев назад
My biggest problem to date with boat life is how unreliable the internet is. I've been using my phone's hotspot until now and the peaks and troughs of the speed and the hotspot just disconnecting is really frustrating when your job involves the internet! I was looking for solutions and I came across the Kuma Connect Lite as an option. I chatted to them and they agreed to send me a product to tr...

5 Reasons Why Narrowboat Living Isn't for Everyone
Просмотров 27 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I've lived on the narrowboat for 5 weeks and I have already come up with 5 reasons why you shouldn't buy a narrowboat to live on - strangely they also might be the very reasons that you should... it just depends what type of person you are! Narrowboat life isn't as easy as you might think and the community has it's nuances... you might love it, you might hate it. My latest instalment of narrowb...
First Week, GOT A LEAK! Narrowboat Life!
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Narrowboat life is never plain sailing - pun intended. You never know what little problems you might encounter or big ones! A leaking boat is never fun. Thankfully just a small leak that I was super confident I could deal with, but certainly one I could do without in my first week! Feel free to subscribe if narrowboat vlogs is what you are looking for as I’m now living on a narrowboat. Catch yo...
What kind of IDIOT buys a narrowboat to live on?
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Welcome to the channel, where I share my boat life journey. Narrowboat living won’t be easy… especially considering I’ve never owned a boat before! The trials and tribulations of Captain Dan 😂 The joys of boat life brought to you in my own way. Already I know I’ll have some changes electrically, some fun with making the windows more water tight and general lifestyle changes… oh and emptying the...
Haha I think the toilet thing is not my thing and lived on a boat with a girl for a few months and felt there was no privacy..get out your boat and there’s people walking by wanting to talk..I think I’d have to crap at work most of the time and try a compost toilet and ignore the public if I’m a busy area (most boaters don’t even look at people walking by so I think privacy affects all boaters) and try to get out into the countryside every now and then for a barbecue
The toilet thing is absolutely my least favourite part 😂😂😂
I have to say that many ppl live in huge cities in flats etc and are very isolated. Remember that case of a woman in London found in a flat deceased after a year with the tv still on…
This is very true. Good point.
Hmmmm I really want the adventure of living on a nb… but can see there will be some tricky ones to solve…. Thanks for sharing.
It’s full of puzzles! But plenty of people who are willing to help you learn etc
Soothing voice… easy to listen to.
Thanks 🤘
I would gladly live on a narrow boat, but the option to move every two weeks would disrupt me. I like to keep my feet in the same place.
Same… I have a permanent mooring in a marina
All great points....that unspire me further to give it a go. 😂 thank you
That’s the spirit!!!
Thanks Dan
Thanks for watching, Debbie 😌
Video that could have been a paragraph or list.
But you were passionate enough to comment about it. Thanks. Have a great day.
I don't know what to say just watched the video and am left a bit befuddled by the fact that most people find all your negatives apart from toilet which a compost toilet is best way forward their positives If anyone want to live on a narrowboat the solid sound advice would be hire one for a week or two and see You could also have mentioned water tanks need filling leisure batteries running flat the list goes on but so what just get on with it
Yup, only pointing out something to consider. It’s just 5 reasons that it MIGHT not be for everyone… they can also be 5 reasons you will love it… that’s the joy of life, nobody is the same.
That depends where you moor , if your in London it’s nit surprising.
Absolutely… I’ll re do this video soon now I’ve been living on the boat longer
😂 you were very lucky you didn’t split your difference 😂
Very true! Rather glad I didn’t!!!
If your a bit used to things been done for you and not very hands on. It can be an expensive and stressful life. Hands on approach, a love for water, outdoors and a bit of getting mucky almost regularly then its a dream, 4 years in. Love it
Fully agree! If you are not hands on, then you will be in for a shock to the system or an empty wallet! 😂
Try having breast biopsy surgery. Pretty much look like a an aubergine 🍆 afterward. Too Much Info ? Yah
Hopefully a one-off, my experience was 10 years ago, I swung my legs out of bed and sat up but kept going and found myself laying down again, then sat up again feeling very unsteady thinking 'is this the rest of my life'. I was prescribed Cerc, it works in the short term but can't work long term as it become less effective over time. My initial dizziness lasted a week, but it comes back when I'm tired and lasts anything from minutes to hours. I went for an MRI, ENT, and audiology tests a couple of years ago when it came back with a vengeance, they have a great room in the Royal London hospital where they strap you into a chair and purposely make you dizzy while checking your eye movements, so there is some excitement to be had. Like I said, hopefully you just had temporary symptoms and no permanent damage.
Bloody hell! That’s crazy! I hope they get to the bottom of it for you.
Thanks for the update 😊
Cheers Sharon
can we get a boat tour?
Sounds like a great idea
Tokyo Drift a boat haha!
Need to get you lads on the boat in high winds 😂
@@CutSluice sounds mad! Yes please!
It's nice to know that it's not just clumsy old guys like me who fall in! Wind kind of sucks on a canal boat. I've been kicking around the idea of installing one or more of those "fins" that rotates into the water like a little keel to see if it helps. Sorry you got sick. Take care of yourself, my friend.
Thankfully I’m almost back to full balance… crazy how it just smashed me for a few days and then pretty much went away again!
Thank you for the kind words. Anyone can fall in… no matter how sure footed they think they are 😂
Ha ha ha ha yeah, I’d have laughed too!
Yeah, same ha ha
It sounds like heaven to me well except the toilet bit but I was a nurse so it wouldn’t faze me. This Aussie may need to find a way to get myself over there after my kids are all adults 😄
One thing you may want to check is the difference in weather 😂
I have just now discovered you videos and they are exactly what I need as I'm thinking of my first narrowboat purchase.
Thanks Hugo. More to come!
I've noticed solo constant cruisers made a point of having the thought of needing to emptying the cassette as a normal "chore" its helped them to keep ontop of the check list and making waypoints so they do not catch themselves being empty of water, gas, firewood/coal. Which is a great point. I can see myself doing that unless I had something constantly reminding me "I need to be sorted" So having to do the nasty job once a week or every two weeks or how often I will fill it on my own I know I'll make a habit of checking everything else reducing the "Oh, I want a shower but ran out of water" moments which I bet happens more often than people like to admit lol (Having shampoo in your hair still and out of water completely at 7pm dark, unable to travel to the nearest point)
Yup. All absolutely great things to have in mind!!
I love watching these "Don't do this" video because it keeps me doing reality checks and I keep finding more reasons to do it. I tend to answer the key points people bring up as "it might not be fore you" and I am happy to still go and live on one. One point I can see will be Showering - Taking shorter showers, I tend to take LONG LONG showers because I can. I would have to be actively changing that behaviour. if you can't afford to cut down shower times because you have limited water supply until your next refill then maybe its not for you.
This is sooooo true! I love long showers too. Thankfully not a problem in the marina but out and about, different story!
I crave solitude. No poophobia. Don't get hysterical about privacy. Love all weather. Lightning tho, eeeek! I'm retired. It's dull. Nothing ever changes. Thiz would be a step up! Thanks for this wisdom. It helped to hear about these. The only thing I think would bother me would be the smells.
What smells? I fell in the canal today… smelled better than some things I’ve encountered 😂
Seems straightforward. I'll drop my speed in the country (place where there might not be 5G).
Hi really good vid thanks , but just in case you weren't aware , for pump out toilets you can purchase your own pumps from a company called Lee San. This means if a person's boat was stuck in ice they could still pump out into 25 litre barrels then empty at elsan
That’s a great shout! Definitely did not know and that could be really helpful for a lot of people!
We have a pump out, its expensive and a constant worry that it will leak, we thought about a composting toilet but disposing of it is the problem, i will not put poo in a bin, in plastic bags its not right and not environmentally friendly and its not composting
Exactly that. The infrastructure is not there for composting to be viable from what I can tell. I do hope this will change.
Thanks for the contact: Jay Wolff ? Note: if you're filming metal work, hold a dark lens, or a pair of amber sunglasses in front of the camera lens, to catch the welding
Variable ND filter for the win!

Cool 😊
More Astro stuff to come!
Good job. Reassuring
Still hasn’t leaked since 🤘🤘🤘
Hmm. Should i buy silicone sealant to put behind the wall studs in my apt. Would the water just lead further down. Yes, it would. However, fantastic fix - you must be pleased
Yup. Very pleased. Could have been as bad as the heating fiasco 😂
Nice one Dan, there isn't a lot of room in the engine bay for that sort of thing is there. Stirling job though. The quote of the video "my pipe is frozen stiff" 😂 good job mate.
Oh wow… hadn’t thought about it like that 😂😂
Totally sympathise about holes in pipes - we had engine coolant leak because engine vibration had worn a hole in the pipe where it runs through the bulkhead to the calorifier. Hope you weren't without heating for too long.
Thankfully just a day because Jay could squeeze me in… I’d have been stuffed if I hadn’t made friends in the trade though. It was during the really cold period in Jan!
How does it work for an address? Do you still have a registered address on land or can you get registered living where you moor up?
This also could be a video itself… I’m lucky enough to be able to use my parents address for post etc but there are other options.
Nice one! It would be interesting to see what routine checks you carry out on Red October.
Thanks Bryan. That’s a video in itself.
Filmed this in Jan but had other videos I wanted to show it out first. Hope you enjoy!
Top video as always dude! I’m loving seeing this all come together.
Cheers Jono. I’ve been out polishing my brass today… oooooo matron!
I really envy you. The quiet and solitude is what I would _really_ enjoy, and I plan to live one a boat soon, myself. Your insights since you started this channel have been really useful and I hope you can keep it up. Thanks for everything and the very best of wishes and luck to you 👍
Thank you Greg. I’ll do my best to keep it all going. Life is busy… but I think I’ll be able to keep it going, especially through the summertime
Got to love the honesty
been great following your journey! looking forward to joining you on an adventure!
Yeah buddy!
Many thanks for your honest answers to all the questions. I'm faced with a few life changes and a narrowboat is very much an option so this channel is proving to be very informative!
Cheers Bryan. You are very welcome. If you have the opportunity to rent one for a week, that might give you a bit more of an idea.
Been on my for boat many many years.... Everything you said I love and more.... Even the pump out toilet.... Those that love it, those that hate it 😂.
Absolutely! Different strokes for different folks. It’s not for everybody, but absolutely is for you and I 🤘
Awesome vlog Dan ,lovely having you as a neighbour, look forward to seeing you soon 🍺🍺
You down next weekend?
Great to have you three (can’t forget your furry friend) as neighbours!
@@CutSluice Hi Dan not sure at moment ,probably be near the end of the month 👍👍
Good weather this weekend 😉
Great stuff mate Very honest It's a big learning curve
Thank you. Gotta be honest, if nothing else!
*coffee contraption* Oh, you kids...! 🤣 Have you fallen into the canal yet? I have - twice! Well, three times technically, but once was on purpose looking for a certain *cat* who went overboard one night, and who I thought was drowning. (He wasn't. I froze my ass off in the canal alone, in the middle of nowhere, looking for his furry butt. Nothing. He turned up on the towpath the next day perfectly happy. Stupid cat.)
😂😂😂 so you were soggy with a dry moggy! I’ve not fallen in… yet 😂
The last question was the best, imho. Bright blessings to you and yours, including your boat. Namaste'. 💖
Agreed. Can we get Brian to star on the show Dan?
Thanks Belinda, I did try to save the best till last. I have no idea who Bryan is… seems pretty sound though, Rich.
Hello there!
Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions! Very much looking forward to the next video!
You are very welcome Jono! I very much appreciate you watching and supporting the channel!
