The Promised Land; Chuck Berry & the Civil Rights Movement
Просмотров 50 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Long considered to be the “Father of Rock ’n Roll,” Chuck Berry was not known as a social activist. Yet, he was raised in the Jim Crow South and often suffered as an artist due to racial discrimination. In this song, penned in 1962, Berry tells of a “po’ boy” struggling to travel out of “segregationist” Dixie and on to the “Promised Land.” In so doing, he name-checks the sites of numerous civil...

    This is what Bruce Springsteen did to me. I was 15 years old. He took my songs and he told me that he'd pay me if he used them depending on how good they were. Beginning in 1974 and up until 1982. Some of the lyrics were his major hits. Bruce used me worse than Mike Appel ever used him. I believed in Bruce. He looked me Square in the eye and he shook my hand. I trusted Steven as well. There was more than enough money for everybody. They never gave me any. He made hundreds of millions off of lyrics I wrote. No wonder he's conflicted..

    I knew a criminal attorney years ago, who was also an excellent songwriter. He sang a song to me he called " Super Skier" a bit of a comedy about some of his own skiing experiences. I think this Peter Weisz is extremely multi-talented, and this needs to be stated JUST AS he has done. I placed 235 original songs I'd written, some for violin, some for orchestra (though I never had access to one!) and You Tube deleted over 200 of my videos...Lots of time lost uploading, as as discouraging as it has been, I've been copyrighting originals along with children's songs I wrote when I was teaching in LA and Ventura County Schools. The first "complaint", oh, I see they term it a "strike," yes ? was in regard to an original song from our children's musical, which, in order to help educate the children to the "music of the times", the times being the year 1779--We utilized the three words commonly utilized by many other songwriters, (i.e. South Pacific fame?) and You Tube Complained... I was willing to change or delete those three words from our song "One Enchanted Evening, I Found and Old Friend..." but they never responded.... • @peterweisz42
      @peterweisz42 3 месяца назад

      Correct. St. Louis was a segregated city in 1930s & 40s. As a young performer, Berry traveled extensively across the South and came face to face with Jim Crow racism. Not wishing to alienate any of his Southern record and ticket-buying followers by overtly championing the civil rights movement, he slyly slipped in references - in this tune and others - that paid homage to the struggle going on around him in the 1960s. That's the point of this video. Thanks to R.J. Smith for drawing attention to this aspect of Chuck Berry's career in Smith's outstanding biography: Chuck Berry; An American Life. (Hatchett Books, 2022).

    Here are the lyrics. Written in 4 seconds by ChatGPT: The Stories We’re Told Verse I: Oh the cold western wind, it howls and it moans Through the alleys and streets that I wander all alone With a voice like a whip and a heart full of pain It sings of a love that I’ll never regain Verse II: The leaves, they rustle and they fall to the ground Reminding me of the love I’d once found. But now it is gone, like a ship in the night Leaving me here to wonder what might. I remember the stories from when we was young In the air that we breathed and in the songs that we sung. Lovers and heroes all showed us the way And they hang in my heart up to this very day So I'll keep on a-moving and I'll continue to try With the wind at my back and the stars in my eyes For though the road it gets dark, the mornin’ looks bright And those stories we’re told will get me once more through the night. So come all ye young and come all ye old Join me in a story that has yet to be told For the wind, it blows high and causes each tale to unfold And the answers we seek, are in those stories we're told.

    Dylan adapted songs and still does. I don't see the harm in mentioning the original version of a song but musicians don't do that much. Dylan tends to improve the song he adapts, maybe with a few new lyrics, maybe with a song that's for the most part original. But adapting without mentioning the original is common. Then, in folk, lyrics change over the years. There's this and that version and nobody knows who wrote the original or the adaptation. If a song is great enough to last through the centuries, that's what happens.
