Because clay pots are porous, one should never use soup or anything that is real abrasive. I suggest lookibg it up on the proper use and care of clay pots.

thanks for uploading! here in Philippines, we use some vinegar with salt and water, then we boil it to remove the impurities and leftovers and remove the smell. clay pots in our country are either glazed or not. for clay pots with glazing (in the Japanese, Chinese, or Korean style) you can use washing up liquid because it won't be soaked up onto the clay, but those without (our native Filipino clay pot, which is the same as the Indian clay pot) maybe its best to use vinegar and salt with water and boil it, then rinse out and boil plain water to remove the residue. it's very effective :)
