Tommy's!

Years ago, I 'discovered' Hormel tamales in a can. Obviously, not the best and never were meant to win any awards, but for a quick work lunch, they did the trick. I had forgotten about Tommy's chili tamales from when we moved out of L.A. for good in 2002. Even all the trips back to L.A. to visit family and friends, the trips to Tommy's consist of chili hamburgers and chili hot dogs. One day I had bought a can of chili in the grocery store--more specifically, hot dog sauce type of chili. No where near as good as Tommy's, but better than scooping chili con carne on hot dogs. Then it hit me...I had leftover sauce and a can of Hormel tamales so automatically thought of Tommy's. I realized years ago that the whole point of Tommy's chili was never to be more than a condiment, and I guess so did Tommy's, so to make it a 'meal' they shoved an industrial tamale inside a chili boat full of chili and topped it with hamburger toppings for good measure. So, the same can be said for those cans of Hormel tamales--bury them in so-called hot dog sauce and top with various toppings. Makes the tamales far more palatable, the hot dog sauce more palatable as a 'chili' and fills in for being at least a 5 hour drive from the nearest Tommy's. We were 3 hours and could take a quick run to San Diego to get our Tommy's fix, but their only San Diego location has since closed down for good (as well as their Pasadena location btw) so we have to wait for trips to L.A. to get our fix nowadays.
