Muppets Sex and Trauma
Добавлен 3 апр 2021
"Muppets, Sex, and Trauma" is how Sara described Farscape to new watchers Jack and Josh, and so naturally it became the name of our podcast. Releasing episodes every other week, we look at the cool Muppet work, the sexy times and sexual politics and the story of trauma recovery at the heart of this show. Come watch us on RUclips or listen on your podcatcher.
Episode 4.6 Natural Election
They were wandering through the wormhole district of the Uncharted Territories when suddenly and without warning there was a total eclipse of the stars. It got very dark and when they looked around there was a weird plant all over Moya.

It's a Wonderful Traumatic Muppets Sex Life
I was hoping you would comment on the parallel with peacekeeper control of Moya's ability to conceive. And you didn't disappoint, and pursued it further than I'd got to!
I put my phone away for Two seconds and I think this shit rocks 🤘😎🤘
I put my phone away for Two seconds and it went from the tim dillion podcast to this shit
the fact that nobody picked up on chiana is also helped by her bein a newer crew member, but the fact that she Wasnt quipping or being overly talkative shouldve at least brought her some attention imo ! but recently rewatched this episode and it was such a fun watch for me :]
o also, the thing about the sexual tension w larraq, i think its definitely easy to read into considering this kind of.... vying for dominance type thing going on with them almost immediately? as johns trying to emulate the power dynamics of peacekeepers, it really does have that kind of homoerotic shit going on for sure. i literally walked in on a specific scene with john and larraq and said "theyre within kissing distance" x,D
It’s funny how y’all refer to Unity as “sex magic,” but I’ve also never read it as being a physical thing at all? It’s an ecstatic state for sure, but it strikes me as a mystical ecstasy. John, who doesn’t seem to be a particularly religious/spiritual person, describes it in very physical terms, and his “Disney on acid” quip strikes me as “happiest place every but also a bit loopy but I feel so good I don’t care”. He doesn’t have the language to describe it in more esoteric terms. It’s always left a bit vague, for the viewer to interpret as they like. And certainly at the end of S2/beginning of S3, we see Unity used in ways that are definitely…not pleasurable. So it’s never translated to me as strictly a sexual thing. Maybe it’s part of sex, or takes the place of sex, in Delvian culture, or in their spiritual practices, but it also clearly serves other purposes as well.
Great to have MS&T back again after the Christmas break. And it was just what I needed to watch this morning to take my mind off my impending root canal work at midday. And perfect to finish watching as I sit here with the anaesthetic wearing off. I always feel like I'm in the room with you all (although you are all in different places of course) especially when the long digressions and fits of laughing break out. Thank you, and if it's too much to wish a happy new year, whatever else the coming year brings may it include unexpected joys, deepened friendships and much laughter.
As an English woman- not offended by the Churchill comment at all. On the contrary... Was gonna wait until Iistening to the whole show to comment since I adored Red Dwarf as a teenager. But this was too good.
This used to air on nick Jr in the 90s
This might be a “no-prize” sort of answer, but here’s my take on Aeryn’s reaction to Chiana vs John’s reaction. John, as with most humans, sees the jump, “taking the stone,” as a death-wish. He also sees the inhabitants as having a death wish, since they insist on staying below-ground where the deadly radiation hangs out. And that is entirely reasonable from our human perspective. I think Aeryn catches on to the sonic net thing sooner. To her, it’s probably more like a bungee jump: incredibly risky, yes, but survivable if done just right. Chiana needs to do something that makes her feel alive. I don’t remember how I reacted the first time I watched this episode, but over the years, I don’t see Chiana as suicidal. I understand how John interprets her that way-but I think he’s also feeling guilty about ignoring Chiana. Chiana has been very safe on Moya. John is trying to parent Chiana. Aeryn, at least, is respecting Chiana’s autonomy, and I think she knows Chiana well enough to know she isn’t looking for death. I think it’s telling that Chiana doesn’t jump until she’s ready, AND her friends are able to be supportive-and she lives, and is exhilarated after it! She has no regrets.
Re the Expanse, great comments! And I actually agree re ranking, I like the constellation idea. I'm just reading the Expanse books now, after watching show twice and bingeing several reactions to it. The changes/additions between books and show aee fascinating. There are some iconic scenes introduced in show which it's hard to imagine not being part of the story (eg Bobby and a certain politician meeting by the ocean).
I had forgotten this one too...
And no, I don't 'lava' it!
And very good news Josh on your health progress!
Well we're here - as one writer called it - The Mind Controlling Boob sweat. As much as i love this show - dear God if I could erase one thing it would be this whole thing. The Farscape Theme chanting on the other hand, I have always loved.
Had to order season 4 and wait for it to arrive, to rewatch before I watched this. Been waiting so long for Josh to meet 1812!
Brilliant as always. When John painted A+C=B on the wall. Aeryn + Crichton=Baby. Love season 4 and look forward to watching your shows about it.
Love the outro out-takes!
Oh, I'm so glad you've seen The Expanse now, Sara! It may be too soon to say, but how does it rank alongside your favourite SciFi shows?
It's one of the best for sure.
I view the visions of Moya's crew on Earth as the opposite end of the spectrum from John's fears in 'A Human Reaction'. Instead of everyone being afraid of D'Argo, he's loved by children. Chiana is having fun and has all the stuff and sex she could want. Everything is great, his friends are accepted, and it's still all wrong. Before his fear was that if they came home with him, they'd be in danger, but now he has to accept that even if everything was perfect, they still wouldn't fit in. Earth is too prudish for Chiana, D'Argo would hate being treated like a novelty, Aeryn isn't a housewife. It's like the old woman was saying, the lies he told himself reveal the truth he didn't want to see.
Cultural references: an Episode of Grimm when a character's screen name was Aeryn Sun and an episode of Community when a guy spends an entire night at a bar talking w Abed about Farscape bc he's trying to get him in bed.
I’m listening to the podcast-I saw the show back when it aired, now I’m sharing it with my 14yo 9th grader. Re: Rygel assaulting Chiana during Talyn’s birth, that was NOT the first instance on screen! During “Durka Returns”, the first time Salis checks her restraints through the cell bars, he checks her handcuffs, and then gropes her. Which is what inspires her to say she’d make it worth his while to let her go. Salis is, to my mind, not so free of deviance as he’d like us to believe he, and most Nebari, are. Not if he’s groping his prisoner’s @$$ like that, when she can’t do anything to stop him. It’s quick, and easy to miss what he’s doing because of her dark cloak. But it’s definitely there. I’m guessing that in her experience, she expects that kind of assault, so she says nothing. It’s only after she joins Moya’s crew that she protests when Rygel tries something. I’m not sure he goes as far as Salis-just enough to annoy her, not because he wants to take further advantage of the cramped circumstances-but that’s just my opinion.
We call Ben Mendelsohn "Mendo" down here and he was already a well established actor in Australia by the time he did this episode of Farscape! If anything it was quite the pull for this series to get him on but I'm glad to see him play a total freak.
Neato
Ding dong!
I now picture the Wicked Witch clutching a handbag and speaking with Mrs T's imperious, patronising tones.
Thank you for having me on Sara! Had a really great time talking about this remarkable film with you 🏳🌈🌈
Appreciate the shout out, Josh! I’ll see you and Sara for “I Yensch, You Yensch”! 😉
How to greatly improve a Friday morning (after listening to the news and feeling depressed)! Great discussion, friends. Loved the reflections on hair and clothing changes as expressions of mourning or other upheavals and radical changes in life. Made me ponder how the collective trauma of COVID lockdowns and enforced interruption to 'normal' capitalist productivity-obsessed society was reflected in changes in clothing, makeup and hair. Wearing mire comfortable clothes, letting hair grow longer, embracing the grey etc - not exactly a choice as access to hairdressers was restricted - but when lockdowns were lifted and people stopped having to work from home, some made the choice to put the professional armour back on as they got back to work, choosing to get hair cut and coloured, back on with the heels, the bras, the smart clothes, the makeup - but others have chosen to make permanent changes in working practices and work/life balance, often reflected in a greater freedom of expression in how they dress or wear their hair... Sorry, bit of a tangent perhaps, but that's where my mind went during your discussion. I loved Aeryn's look in this episode with the long dress and long loose hair, and it was painful (though understandable) to see her choose to re-embrace the peacekeeper soldier look at the end. By the way, I wonder which of the several/many choices in the episode is 'The Choice' of the title. One obvious answer is revealed near the end of the episode: the order presented as a choice to Xhalax years before to kill either Talyn or Aeryn.... And are Xhalax's final words to Aeryn: 'You live... for me' a statement or a command? And how does that impact on Aeryn's choice at the end?
You guys are the best gift the Almighty Algorithm has given me recently. Subd N Belld ⭐
Farscape is one of the shows that I have not binge watched yet. My experience with it is sporadic. My understanding of the timeline is Just Barely. I really enjoyed the depth you went to and the lack of toxic fandom was so refreshing. Not sure how often y'all post, but I'm gonna go back to your intro video and start at the beginning. Maybe I can talk a friend into watching with me.😉 I'm an Elder GenX, Empty Nester, Queer, Loud Mouthed Activist chick, RUclipsr and I paint on everything 😂 I didn't get the time stamp, but the conversation about outer presentation of our inner self... Wow y'all 💚 😮 It was really great to hear your stories... I say I'm Barely A Girl... It's the best I could figure out BITD before the right words and concepts were publicly available to know... I'm 56.... Class of '86 😂 I appreciated hearing y'all tonight.🫶🏻🤟🏻🖖🏻🤞🏻
Oh, forgot to mention that I'm part Muppet 😂... Hellifino which part though😂😂😂😂
@@SnarkNSass I highly recommend watching all their videos from the beginning, and if you havent seen the whole show, watch that from the beginning too with Muppets Sex and Trauma as your companion. You won't regret it!
I'm so glad you found us. We try to post every other week, though currently Josh has some scheduling issues so I 've been alternating Farscape episodes with various Farscape adjacent media.
Thanks for having me on your show, Sara. Always a pleasure!!
I'm a little late to the party, but I enjoy the discussion and Farscape.
As to the filler debate, I have 2 words "Pillar filler." So many beautiful ideas were introduced because they needed to fill a couple minutes
"Wove, twue wove" But more seriously, and to bring it back to Star Trek, the episode reminded me of Frame of Mind. Aliens are trying to get info out of Riker's memory and the rest of the crew shows up as facets of his personality
Sufferin' succotash, that was fun! Now I want to go right back and (re)re-watch the episode and laugh some more. Which I will do alongside your reaction video, so I can enjoy you both laughing too!
I feel like I’ve stumbled upon something
I think vacuums and sewing machines have similar motors. They're often repaired at the same places
So you're saying that the fact that Gonzo was always my favorite (more from Muppet Babies, but still) should have told me something 🤔
I’m really glad I wore my bi pride plaid for this review, appropriate for pride month 😋
Hadn't heard of this one. Your summary made it sound very funny... But i think I'll give it a miss!
Blindly Subd N Belld ⭐ ... 💗
I think my favorite moment (aside from the obvious) is Stark saying "I have no prayer for that" after the Dreadnought is destroyed. The writers and actor do a great job, particularly in this episode, of having Stark provide the comedic relief, so when he drops those serious lines it's like a gut punch.
Great episode Sara, Josh, & Jessie!!
Is there a chance that John really was making up the whole crazy story as an excuse?
It's possible
I usually have to listen on my commute but there is no way I'm doing this first time without visuals!
...or don't...
This ep isn't included on Prime for whatever reason 😢
Sara, please don't ever say "masculinity soup" again 😅
It's always the last mission. I kept waiting for one of the slave/indentured aliens to say they were too old for this sh*t.
I fully admit I might be projecting, but I read an internal conflict in Xhalax Sun. I felt that she wanted Aeryn to kill her. Not only would it have saved Xhalax from having to kill her daughter, but she would have been proud
Resist the mist!
I really love this episode; the shot at the end, where Scorpius has the flower from where his mother's ship landed always reminds me of the small line that Harvey says in Wait for the Wheel: "why is it always the gentle ones that pay the price for everyone else's ambition?" It's so interesting to see a character who has experienced this kind of ambition firsthand and will still commit horrible acts to achieve his own! Definitely one of my top 3 episodes as an incurable Scorpius fan
My favorite part of this episode is probably the neural clone of John. I'm very curious how much of John is in the neural clone, he has many of John's best and worst qualities; he's deeply compassionate, stubborn, impatient, and curious. He also lacks some of the unhinged energy that John was exhibiting closer to the end of last season (when the chip was removed). This doesn't feel like a third John (equal and original) but it also feels like more than a digital copy, almost like the chip tap into the core of who John Crichton is and created an idealized version of him. Second place goes to Braca's pleased little smile when Scorpius told him that his recent performance had been exemplary. We're not gonna talk about why.
If Heaven only has a stairway I ain’t going ♿️
There's a ton of Trek where characters agree to be possessed, only to have the possesor then refuse to leave. This reminded me of TOS's Return to Tomorrow and TNG's (unfortunately named) The Schizoid Man
