Ed Byrne slates Alanis Morissette
Просмотров 1,7 млн18 лет назад
The now infamous slating of Alanis Morissette's 'Ironic' by Irish comedian Ed Byrne perfomed on The Standup Show some years back...
Totally forgot about this b side! You can hear them cracking up trying to do it 😂
There seem to be at least 3 versions of this song (aside from live versions)? There's this original album version that I know best, the version with orchestral strings mixed in, and a third version with no strings and more effects that seems to be on "Happy Families Too"?
Another version of "Waves" is from the John Peel session in February 1982.
I'm Canadian and went through a I don't like Alannis but now I love her but agree about the irony joke.
Irish hair.
I fucking love that they keep repeating the same shit to each other all the time. The producer going "yeah" over and over makes me cackle for whatever reason. I also love that at 2:16 they start chuckling to themselves as they struggle to maintain character. Also, the download link doesn't work! Shame :(
Julian Mendelsohn did a fabulous remix of this song. Check it out.
Ah. They are pedants. They don't grasp the contexts. Fair enough. Not terribly surprised about low language comprehension, tbf.
Ironically a simile is a metaphor. 4:30
Heard this on John Peel in 1988 and had on a tape - played over and over till got chewed up in my car 10 years later. Got me into both acid house and Benny Goodman!
Rain on your wedding day is only ironic if you're marrying the sun god, Ra.
& then there's his brilliant Back to the Future bit too...where some US comedian in a suit is getting all the credit atm, thanks to those "Pitch Meeting" vids.
Our lecturer showed us the song and then this video to show how to distinguish between "unfortunate situation" and "Irony"
Find another lecturer. Seriously. High schoolers can recognize irony.
Perhaps the reason Alanis Morissette perceives inconveniences as ironic is because she is so self-obsessed that she expects the world to always cater to her. Therefore, whenever something happens that goes against her, even slightly, it goes against her perceived plan of the universe and is therefore ironic.
Perhaps the reason your reading comprehension is too low to recognize irony is because school failed you?
I've been looking for this version for ages on... another platform. Thanks for uploading
Wow, today I learned about this version. It clearly is different from the more common Extended Remix. Never thought they were different, though. Thanks for posting.
I love that song and this joke 😂
Such a funny rant but I love the song and ".. 10, 000 spoons when all you need is a knife" still feels amusingly and alarmingly accurate about my life most of the time. Apparently, it only reached no. 11 in the UK charts at the time when a true lyrical calamity, "Ooh aah ... just a little bit" by Gina G, got to no. 2. That's not irony either, it's a musical tragedy.
The producer saying "ye" is my favourite part of this.
I love this. I'll never look at the song the same way ever again. Damn, Ed is so young in this. He's 51 now and just as funny. His last message to the BBC for cancelling Mock The Week was brutal and I'm sure he was speaking for all the regulars.
The most woefully unfunny man to pick up a mic. I remember when he was the booker at Glasgow University.
You can't just blame Alanis, there were sound engineers, producers, board operators, mixing engineers, mastering engineers etc....probably listened to this tune a couple of hundred times to get everything just right sonically and arrangement wise. And yet not one of those geniuses ever thought to say, "You know Alanis, there's nothing Ironic in any of the examples here." Cheers!
Because they have an adult English language comprehension level? You didn't realize this guy is joking?
Ooh Ed Byrne as a child!! Be still my beating heart lol😂❤ and that long luscious hair! Now, what is he on about?🤣🤣 He makes me laugh so much
Not as good as the song. Ironic.
I watched this once when I was like 16. Now I'm 30 and still think "10, 000 spoons isn't ironic; that's just stupid!" every time I hear the song so decided to look it up and it's funnier than I remembered 🤣
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers for uploading this, it's a great version! Reminds me somewhat of Fortran 5...
Head phones light out. Give me a time machine. Get me out of 2022 British shit hole. One way ticket To the 80s...
Thanks for uploading this version. It is pure gold. Love the extra drumbeat at 3:00 onwards
Ed, you're too smart.
Still makes me laugh.
As an English teacher I’d love nothing more than to show this to my class but good god I’d be fired before he could finish the first line
do it! :)
Just do your own version
@@dobbinthehorse 15 years and you are still active, a little ironic don't you think?
I was still at school when I saw him do this routine on TV (mid 90s I guess) and it taught me the meaning of irony

what a total jerk. Stop moaning about Alanis Morisette you whiny ass.
It's called comedy, sounds like you need some in your life
Grow up you sad twat, it's comedy, go get a sense of humour.
Love these guys! They are the best!
Even Alanis thinks the song is ridicouls
I just responded to a thirteen-year-old post now I get why Alanis Morissette is relevant
I love your shit dude but don't diss on Alanis. She's a god to us addicts. 🇺🇸
That's comedy I enjoy :D
Very funny and AM is awful!
I love this, I can watch it on repeat.
Mr Lister Sir
So was the Bo Burnham song a reference to the other song?
Sorry to be a Poindexter but Morrisette's song does deliver sound examples of situational irony, with the possible exception of "...meeting the man of my dreams, then meeting his beautiful wife" which may not qualify as an example of situational irony.
Yeah, it'd have to be like afterward, or coincidental.
This is a routine where other comedians watch it and think “fuck why didn’t I think of that”
many did the same bit
@@silverkitty2503 like who? I’ve never come across it before but would like to see other takes :-)
SPEEDY! :(
The trumpet solo is "The Toy Trumpet" by Raymond Scott
Irony is like goldie or bronzey yet with iron Baldrick - Blackadder
Haha I still think about the simile jab and was hoping it was available to watch. Thank goodness.
Recently saw a comical and insightful interview with Ed Bryne discussing his career highlights. You guys should check it out here: ruclips.net/video/EfFEiaMY31s/видео.html
I was the first among anyone I knew that was saying that the song Ironic actually has no ironies in it, just unfortunate experiences. The only irony is that the song is completely devoid of ironies.
Which set does he do the dream joke about riding a cloud to work?
