Millennial Trainman
Добавлен 25 апр 2020
I am a Minnesota based railfan that comes from a family of multiple generations of workers for the Soo Line Railroad.
My channel features train videos mostly from the Twin Cities area as well as the Twin Ports. As of 2023 I am starting to railfan more out in the country side. That didn’t happen much in 2022 because of inflated gas prices. Oh the times we live in lol. If all goes accordingly in 2023, I am hoping to take a train trip somewhere.
I try to upload videos every week but sometimes I am unable to due to other commitments. Videos are usually uploaded early in the week (Sunday, Monday or Tuesday). Overall there is no official upload schedule but I am working on getting on one.
My channel goals for 2023:
500 subs by the end of August.
800 subs by the end of the year.
Please feel free to give me a follow on my instagram page as well. Link below…

KCS SD70Mac duo leading CPKC ballast trains on CPKC's Withrow Sub feat ballast dumping Spring 2024
In this video you will get to see a variety of clips of a KCS Mac duo leading ballast trains or "GPS trains" as they are referred to. Most clips were shot on CPKC's Withrow Sub with the exception of one near Humboldt Yard. I was even fortunate enough to witness the crushed rock being dispersed along the line at one point. Enjoy!

CPKC J42 with re-painted SD40 2 leader back in the winter of 2024 2-2-2024

Back in early February, I was doing an all day railfanning outing and I just happened to catch J42 with an SD40-2 leader. This came as a surprise. Had I had known about it a little more ahead of time, I would have probably chased it from St. Paul Yard to Humboldt yard. I settled for 2 shots at 2 different locations instead. Back in March of this year, 2 BN green SD40-2's could be seen leading the WLMNTW (Willmar, MN to Northtown Yard) and it's counterpart. A notable unit was BNSF SD40-2 1940. We will see that unit in this video as it leads another EX BN green SD40-2 survivor on the NTWWLM manifest. In this video, you will witness me chasing CPKC daily manifest 243 out of CP's St. Paul Yard with an SD70ACU heritage unit duo. Starting off at parkway junction on the St. Paul Sub: the duo works hard in full throttle as it begins a steep climb out of downtown St. Paul. We'll then shift over to New Brighton and see the train there. The final spot is in Brooklyn Center where the duo heads west o...

Well this is something you don't see everyday! After waiting patiently for the NTWDIL manifest to depart Northtown with a BN Green Sd40-2 survivor leading, I was in for one big surprise. As the train approached Coon Creek, it immediately went into emergency. As the conductor went back to inspect the train and the other units, he apparently found no serious issues as the train was able to get on...
St. Paul, MN Railfanning: East Hump DS. 500 Sub Special Part 3. Winter 2024

I spent the majority of the winter trying to figure a way to make a 500 sub special video. I originally had plans to head out of town somewhere but life got in the way and would not let me. So figured I would do a grand tour around the Twin Cities. The tracks running between Minneapolis & St. Paul are controlled by the East & West Hump dispatchers in Fort Worth, TX. Starting on the St, Paul sid...

Thanks, buddy!
Yo dawg, unless it's on purpose, I think the bass boost on the song in the outro is set a bit too high since the song sounds somewhat distorted and the audio of the videos playing in the background are somewhat drowned out. You may want to lower the bass boost some.

Hey millennial, I was wondering what’s the frequency of trains on the painsville sub and how long do you usually have to wait to see one also are there times when traffic is heavier or lighter?
@@Seaboardsystem-t7e hmmm, depends on which part of the sub you go to. On average the Paynesville see’s anywhere from 10-15 trains a day. This time of the year should be more like 15 with grain harvest in full swing. I guess I would say you wouldn’t have to wait more than 2 hrs at maximum to see a train. Hope that helps!
Nice job! I really like the opening sequence of the train behind the trees and then coming into view after going around the loop.
Great video! I like the combination of the ground and drone shots. I really liked the view of the train coming through the Pioneer Extension. Great meeting you at University last night.
@@dhdisprsmith2296 thanks for the comment! It was good meeting you as well.
Hey buddy! Good meeting you at 121st the other day. Just letting you know that BNSF NTWSUP is leaving NT right now and should be on the sub in 20-30 minutes. He’ll be meeting a CP SB grain in Andover. Just thought I’d let you know in case you were looking to catch some trains on the sub today.
@@millennialtrainman3443 thanks
@@Seaboardsystem-t7e you bet! Now you have a NB UP coming on the sub in 5-10 minutes.
A lot of people are commenting "blown turbo" - but that doesn't happen to EMD units like it does to GE units for two reasons: 1) in the absence exhaust pressure (and below about notch 6) the turbo becomes mechanically driven; and 2) in the absence of intake pressure, the engine won't run at all (2-stroke engines require forced induction). It's more likely that this is the burning of excessive carbon buildup in the exhaust manifold, especially since the flames rapidly thin after first igniting. This will often happen to EMD units when run at notch 8 after overly long periods of idling or low throttle.
I’m excited to see the cp trains from the air!
No pan over?
Blown turbocharger.
I’m going down to Daytons bluff for my birthday coming up it’s nice to see this video so I know what to expect
Nice catches man!
love how the guys at the paint shop didnt even bother to paint the "SF" on 54😭💀
That loco isn't on fire. Gunge in the exhaust?
Too hot of an exhaust manifold, and too much unburned fuel, probably due to a very rich mixture...
Great well done!
Looks like I was not too far from you. I was at Cardigan Junction.
Amazing power on this train I hope we can get some of units on the Hinkley sub soon on cp 250 or 251

A true "railfan"... An engine goes by, spewing flames, and he keeps focused on the rolling stock behind it.
Yeah you deserve way more thumbs up‼️
So I guess I missed this sometimes life is just too unfair
You can still catch him on Sunday. It will be in the cities tell May 5th. It leaves SPUD on Sunday so you will have to travel to the river sub to see it
Sweet
Hey buddy, not sure if you were able to see 2816 while it was here a couple of weeks ago? If not, you will get your chance, it will be running again in the cities as it will be returning to Calgary. It’s scheduled to run from Davenport, IA to St. Paul on July 1st and then from St. Paul to Glenwood on July 3rd. Hope that information is helpful for you…
Thanks for the info
How do you connect DPU's to an old stean locomotive?
My question is how do you add PTC to one?
Great video. I subscribed to your channel as well!

1964 is one of my favorite sd40s to work on besides the MRL sd40s. Was in Glendive for months. The 1905 was sent east for maintenance after it sat in the laurel roundhouse for a month with mechanical issues. It began working the bottom of the west lead in laurel yard this morning.
And the 1964 is back in Glendive. It was gone for a week or so, now I know where it went. I did catch the 1905 and 54 as they were heading east through here, but missed it on the return trip west. I will definitely have to roll by the Laurel yard on my way to the Livingston/Helena Railfair weekend the 26th!
@@BadlandNP haha I’ll be there 🤣
@@yankeesforlife24 C U there! Will have a black stetson on at a vendor table.
@@BadlandNP I’ll be running. I’m one of the club members
@@BadlandNP also, bad news. The 1905 is leaving Laurel right now and going back to Livingston for work. Shows on a Laurel Pasco
Looks like a blown turbocharger to me
That was my impression also.
Looks to be a little carbon burning out! Used to see It all the time when i worked the roundhouse for the WC/CN.
The SD40-2 shooting the flames out the stack looks like it is paired with the slug following it. Those are usually used in yard or hump service. I bet the guys in Dilworth will be happy to get that set.
It’s back in laurel, believe it went east for maintenance. That slug and the 1905 has had issues for weeks and has just been sitting in the roundhouse, I believe I saw it on the lead today.
That was Chad's train.
An EMD, on fire???? Shocked I tell you, just shocked!!!!!
Isn't that a GEVO thing?
More of an overall GE thing! Ha ha.
I cannot tell if the smoke is grey or grey/blue. Given the sparks, I presume he is just burning off carbon buildup which is a normal situation especially if the locomotive is seeing high throttle for the first time in a while. The grey smoke would go along with that pretty well. If the smoke had a more blue tint, it would mean the engine is burning oil, indicative of a failed turbo (actually) or another failure allowing oil to burn in the engine. Sparks in the exhaust would not go along with that kind of failure.
💯right!!!!!!
the smoke looks like a turbo failure
@@nstrains4001 An EMD unit won't run with a complete turbo failure since the 2-stroke engine can't draw air in by itself.

Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video!
I loved this video it’s nice seeing train traffic on the south side of the city’s also that four way meet at Dayton’s bluff was amazing
Thanks for watching and your kind comments. If there is a place to catch a 4 way train meet and have a good vantage point, that location is certainly the best spot for it.
Great variety-thanks for sharing. I appreciate the train symbols as well. Technically the BRCNTW & NTWBRC should be preceded by “H” (BNSF’s legend for “high priority manifest”)
Thanks for watching and the info on train symbols - a small overlooked detailed on my part…
I appreciate that you show the entire train rather than just the power. There’s so much interesting stuff that most railfans will miss.
Thanks for watching! I certainly do what I can…
