Analyzing Willem Dafoe in American Psycho
I do not own the rights to American Psycho or anything associated with it. This video is not monotized and is made for educational purpouses only.

Willem Dafoe is a great actor
Ahhh, so that's why these scenes always twist my noodle!
Part of this movie that nobody talks about is how bad at being a serial killer Patrick is… he’s acting like the most suspicious guy in the world
"I hope I'm not being cross-examined here?" "You feel like that?" "No, not really" I love how goofy Bateman is here.
I did notice it felt like he was all over the place. The obliviousness during tense times made it feel like he was toying with him
Not only does it make Bateman unsure of the investigators behavior, it also put the audience in the mind of a psychopath, completely unable to understand or read this person in any meaningful way besides recognizing patterns.
This scene is a great example of bad art design in a movie. The set in the background is crappy and poorly lit. There's a doorknob behind Willem Dafoe,, almost dead centre, that has a bright reflection which draws the eye and detracts from the focus on his face. The set looks really cheap and doesn't contribute to the emotional tension between the characters. It looks like a bad soap opera scene.
This is all ripped straight from the pages of Crime and Punishment. Dostoevsky invented the cat and mouse game as modern literature knows it.
This is an acoustic analysis
Wait a second. I don’t think the line about him mistaking who he went to lunch with in London is in the film. That’s kind of shocking considering the last conversation in the movie is put there as a kind of confirmation that it was all in Patrick’s head when his lawyer told him the phone call was funny because he had lunch with paul Allen in London… that means that maybe the lawyer actually mistook another person for Paul Allen and maybe it wasn’t all in Patricks head…
At 4:33 dafoe reflects light into bateman's eyes for a reaction, but gets nothing at all.
i fucking love this movie dude
Actually, in the scene when he pulls out the Huey Lewis CD, he shines the reflection at Patrick's face, because psychopaths or sociopaths react slowly to unpleasant things and you can see Patrick not flinch a bit but a cold stone face. Kimball really knows his stuff
You're telling me the whole time Batman was Bateman?!? No creativity with the alias smh
Kimball didn't care because he was busy trying to create oscorps being a detective wasn't his real dream.
it’s so fun watching 2 great actors
I recall that scene making me feel so odd... No wonder.
Typical.
3:24 "I guEEs i wAS pr0bably REturNIng VIDeo tapEs"
God I love this movie
Batman & The Green Goblin in the same film? 🤯🤯
Genius
Trying to analyze a shallow film like a liberal arts major LOL
Everything about Christian Bale is not real, that's why he's a phenomenal actor. His name is even deceiving. He's a adamant satanist yet his name is Christian. It's ironic that people idolize actors & actresses in the modern world. In ancient Rome, lowest 3 things in society were a slave, a prostitute or tavern maiden and an actor was the lowest of the low. The romans hated them because they could never be trusted because one can never know when they are being authentic and not acting. Strange how things are similar and different from 2,000 years ago.
The PI doesn't exist. It was all in Patrick's head. He's literally running through scenarios of how the conversation would go if he actually killed Paul Allen. Like his murder doodles. He's a homicidal daydreamer with an inferiority complex due to his father owning the company that he works for.
Willem Dafoe is basically playing his own version of Columbo in this movie. And it's weirdly intimidating.
The last scene, Defoe seems suspicious, not oblivious.
*X* doubt
William Dafriend
I can't tell if he has Bateman dead to rights or if he thinks he's cool and wants to be his friend
SPOILER I love the ending, where we discover that Bateman is so God Awful at standing out that people actually think he's a John Doe SKRUBB
Amazing
In the book, Bateman isn't all that concerned about getting caught, but he IS distraught because the cop is incredibly stylish, and that makes him appear guilty.
2:11 how is Dafoe oblivious here? He has Bale’s number and knows he’s lying Does the person who made this video not understand when Dafoe is being sarcastic? Christ
the combination of the mouth and eyes/eyebrow
I like to think Kimball was suspicious throughout the whole film but couldn’t prove anything. The “Oblivious” takes are him trying to establish a rapport with Bateman and “Aware” takes are him using interrogation tactics to try and catch him off guard.
Interesting. I was under the impression that the first scene was oblivious, second suspicious, and third aware. His body language goes through a cycle of the three in each scene. I guess I never noticed this because I was focusing on Bateman’s reaction to the questioning. Great video!
YOU.
I just wanted to know if you know. 🙂
The music portion was a great catch IMO. To me he was for sure he killed him. He caught him up because he went to a musical with Paul so when he confronts him with music it seems to trip him up. "You don't like music?" "Well no..."
The opposite approach. Take 1, Bateman is completely confident he is not a suspect. Take 2, Bateman is beginning to realize he may be a suspect. Take 3, Bateman knows he is the prime suspect.
After watching the movie, I am not sure if this actually happened or it is part of his imagination (paranoia). The ending left me confused
Its left open to interpretation intentionally
1:58 That faint sound in the background is so unnerving and perfect for Dafoe's switch up
I think it's a testament to how great his performance is that I completely disagree with a lot of this video.
erm, he didn't kill anyone, in fact this detective must also not exist as there's no crime to investigate except in bateman's mind.
I feel like the OP mixed up oblivious and suspicious most of the time.
sweaty bateman moment
Makes sense now as to why he was a great green goblin
Why is Willam Dafoe so cracked at acting
"Nice. Very Nice." "Thanks" (I hate you.).
