About Shapes of Time:
This two-and-a-half day event at the Yale School of Architecture brings together an interdisciplinary group of artists, architects, curators, scholars, and scientists to investigate the role time plays in their respective fields and in their individual scholarly and creative pursuits. The title hints at the diverse temporal imaginaries in various intellectual fields and artistic media; contemporary conversations about environmental uncertainty and deep time; as well as differing ways time is conceptualized, visualized, and experienced. By taking a trans-disciplinary approach to the...

After the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, two binational boundary commissions surveyed, mapped, and marked the US-Mexico boundary with stone and cast-iron obelisk-shaped monuments. By 1896 there were 258 monuments, dotting the borderlands with a unified set of architectural forms and sovereign claims. In this paper I used the still-extant obelisks and photographic archive of their production to co...

Selecting ‘wallpaper’ or organizing files on a ‘desktop’ are familiar acts that can either take place on our digital devices or in our living rooms. Across split windows, we restlessly click, swipe and oscillate between digital and physical space. Screens are now an inescapable agent of order and disruption that we rely on and mistrust. As their frames disappear, the boundary between viewer and...

For the past 50 years, the Sydney Opera House has been the subject of a prodigious hagiography of the personalities involved in its realization and their legendary quarrels. Thanks for sharing such an open and honest glimpse...of what 'We' ...ought to become. If that is actually possible...might be subject to a long debate...however an attempt is absolutely necessary. 'Journey as place...becoming as end.' What can we become...better than we were...yesterday! John Ferraz Architect.

Carlo Mollino's creations are very revealing. They say a lot about the extraordinary vision, creativity and originality that characterized this genius. This is reflected both in his architectural works and in his pieces of furniture. I have a Protractor desk from Manhattan Home Design and every time I see it I realize how extraordinary this design is and everything it stands for.

Thanks for sharing this, so enjoyable! I agree with all the reasons for using ornament in our environments, just never heard it said so concisely before. Here ( In Italy) the knowledge is still in the artisan culture inherited from generations before. It is in danger of being lost, however, even here.

I like the gentlemen here who I can see have elevated souls --but the buildings they concern themselves with are not our history but instead the history of the French on our soil. It doesn't matter if a few 'native' students reproduced their teacher's work, they were just too weak and unconscious to master the technical skills of Europe but then flip the script and put their skills at the service of their own Moroccan world of meaning instead of importing meaning from specific places abroad. Why isn't anyone talking about restoring al-Badi palace in Marrakesh which is our history but which conveniently gets ignored and condescended to with thespianism. Honestly, the perpetuation of art Art Deco in Casablanca is starting to look like a Cargo Cult I am sorry to say.
