Romantic literature has been named by secular scholars. It is a disparaging term which misunderstands the movement, viewing it from a materialistic perspective. This was a movement of spiritual awakening. Some of the writers who became famous, were plagiarists and imposters. They were popular precisely because they weren't authentic, and hence appealed to the materialistic masses who lacked spiritual discernment. For example, Elizabeth Barrett Browning plagiarized several of her most authentically spiritual poems from American mystics Mathew Franklin Whittier and his wife, Abby Poyen Whittier. Those poems, published by Elizabeth in 1844, including "Lady Geraldine's Courtship," "A Child Asleep," and "The Cry of the Children." All of these are conclusions from my own independent research, conducted over many years.
