Act II (audio only) Dreamgirls 1986 Tour with Sharon Brown, Deborah Burrell, Arnetia Walker Francis & Lucinda Ramseur, Weyman Thompson and Herbert Rawlings Jr.
It's just a bunch of nervous singing.

Thank you!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I saw her in Columbus 1986
im glad they got a chocolate girl to play deena like michael bennett envision!
Heavy and Its all over are FIRE! The acting the singing and the energy of the band soooo good!
The tempos are so bright especially Dreamgirls really keeps the energy up
Theres an extra tag to Heavy instead of the Jimmys Driving Down the strip and then theres the scene thats usually goes right into its all over
With the PHENOMENAL Jennifer Holliday and the talent of the production the audience was very low on energy!!!!
I saw this tour. What great memories! Sharon Brown was an AMAZING Effie!!
cast is the same as OBC?
Amazing how much better and fuller the orchestrations got before coming in.
Wish they'd restore the extended Party Party. I like the musical transitions, the interactions within the whole group and more Effie is always a good thing.
I want the copy that Elisa Gyse is starring in as Deena
I saw Ms. Gyse and Lillias White in Boston -- was completely blown away by both (and I had seen the show multiple times prior to the Boston tour stop).
Gotta love Michael Bennett even more for what he started with and what we got to enjoy on Broadway in the 1980s. As incredible as this first tryout is, the "final" product took it and ran fast and far! Amazing on every level. He upped the stakes for every character, every song, every moment -- no wonder audiences leapt to their feet!
Damn Charity!!!!❤❤❤
Okay so I’m back and listening to the first five minutes…damn, I wish they kept this version! Michelle is a study in “how you got it, is how you'll lose it“ for real. The fact that they are playing her the same way they did Effie (and SO SOON) is a chefs kiss of irony.
Truly one of favorite act 2 openings
OMG!!! 😍
BLESS YOU, BLESS THE HUMAN WHO RECORDED THIS, AND BLESS THE HUMANS THAT HAVE KEPT THIS AUDIO FROM FALLING INTO OBSCURITY. Y’ALL ARE TRUE HEROS.
Yes! I would love to see the video if anyone can share it!!
I love that they incorporated Lorell’s 18th birthday in the original version! It’s always referenced in the final version but never elaborated on. Especially since it seems like she made a wish that benefited the group lol
Thank you for posting these!!! I have been looking for the tryouts for YEARS
This is unbelievably good...........damn!
This pre-broadway version shows how they really changed things. Here Michelle is going to marry Wayne and she's not involved with CC. In the Broadway version Deena, Lorrell, CC and Michelle sing while Jimmy does "I meant you no harm". That song "Quintet" I like better because it gives Michelle more to do in the show. In that she's the one that gets CC to go reconnect with Effie. Here Michelle and Wayne sing "I found You" which is a nice song. But it kind of stalls the 2nd act a bit too much. IMO... They also leave out in this "early" version that Effie's child also belongs to Curtis.
I didn't know that One Night Only replaced the "My Time" one. Of course, One Night Only is what I know and cherish. The ending (Hard to Say Goodbye) was not great. Too slow, too weepy-sounding. The Broadway version corrected that perfectly. Oh my gosh, I love, love, love, this musical.
Wow, it's fascinating. It is definitely a much "rougher" version than the Broadway version I know and love, but the elements are still solidly there. It feels like Harold Wheeler, the musical director/arranger, had some "finishing work" to do -- which he did amazingly well -- but again, the material he had to work with was already excellent. Jennifer Holliday's voice was amazing: rough where it needs to be, and smooth where appropriate. She was (and is) a natural talent. As she (as a performer) matured, so did her ability to sing even smoother/softer in the right places, as well as sounding like "pure electricity" as needed. There has never been a voice quite like hers.
I fully concur. I have chills listening to this amazing post. Great memories

It was so great to hear "It's Gonna Be My Time" even as I think "One Night Only" is the better song. Thanks for posting this!
This just shows you how professional and secure Sheryl Lee Ralph was because all you could hear was Loretta and Jennifer.
What? I don't understand your comment.
@@beaellie9766She has such a light voice. listen to the song move. You only hear Loretta and Jennifer. Personally I would have just been lip syncing until my solos 😂😂 😂
Love this, thank you! Really interesting how the orchestration of Stepping to the Bad Side doesn’t cook nearly as much as it ultimately did. And this audio is a great reminder Ben Harney was just perfect in his role, as was the whole principal cast.
Good job ,but no one compares to the Queen.
Queen who?
You rock for posting this!!!! Thank you!
OMG
I love this! But I wonder why Effie wasn't included in the finale. Deena did say "I know she is watching." Does that mean Effie was going to die anyways even after Jennifer Holliday did everything she could to make Effie stay in the second act? I'm glad they made that last minute change to include her back in.
The I know she's watching is about her mother.
This is before Jennifer asked that Effie doesn't fade away
@hyenanutz I don't think so because she wasn't supposed to be in the second act at all prior to Jennifer quitting/getting fired. They probably just tweaked it more as we can see with a lot of the other numbers and songs.
This is so amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Aah :) the elusive Holliday version, complete with 'Please don't go away from me' <3 thank you so much for sharing this ;)
I can't believe it's all here. She gave so much to this song, show, and life-affirming resolve. It is UNbelievable she was 21 y.o. here!
Queen SLR so beauiful Also the “Dreamgirls” reprise with J.Holliday isn’t in this version
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful tribute to one of my all time favorite musicals ❤
Yasss Boston Tryouts
when was this recorded?
2001
I saw this production and it was incredible! Jasmin Richardson is one of my favorite Deena's!
The clarity!
Sharon Brown: And there is no way I can eva eva EVA EVA, NO NO NO THERE'S N-O-O W-a-a-ay
I STOOD ALL THE WAY UP
I enjoyed this version! The lights, colors and bad ass cloths!
do you have anything with julia micirt Love to here her do anything from the show
FYI: "Julia McGirt" who now goes by the name, "Julia Nixon". I saw her play Effie and couldn't believe what I was I hearing, seeing and experiencing. She held notes for days, the end of "I Am Changing" was this incredible scooped note. I witnessed a forgotten, unappreciated miracle that no one will ever know about.
Who is playing Lorrell?!?
WERE CAN I FIND DAT AUDIO
HEY HOW YOU GET THAT AUDIO
1:11:51 The showstopper starts here
I saw this three times when it was in Chicago! Alisa Gyse was the best Denna Ever! The Lady playing Denna is not Alisa Gyse! Not at all!
Alisa was great, but show some respect to Debbie Burrell she was the ORIGINAL Michelle Morris and o the tour moved up to become the first national tour Deena. Her sister Terry then became the Michelle Morris when this tour returned to Bway in '86 with Lillias White as Effie.
@@leesmith2645 Now I saw her sister on NYC Stage with SLR and SLR seemed kind of uncomfortable singing the new 2nd act opening but Terry's sister is tall!
@@Southgate210 Yeah the 2nd act was built mainly for the tours and Linda Lelani Brown (Deena from 1983 National Tour). It was integrated into the show on Broadway about 6 months after the show went on tour and SLR wasn't very comfortable with all the running and moving around, though she still did a awesome job at it!
