    that story didn't tell the full picture .... The Soviets had some genuine issues once the umpire decided to stop the game with 1 s still to play. Soviets time out request to the bench was sent but not acted on quickly enough by the bench officials i.e. blow horn between the two free throws, and when they decided to replay the 3s the first time, only 1s was put back on the clock and so the siren went off early... There seemed to be a whole heap of errors made from many people, but not really any from the coaches or players of both sides. Although why the US decided to not defend the inbound on the last successful pass was ridiculously dumb, as it gave the Russians a clear passing lane, without which the play was near impossible in that era of the game. All in all, my understanding is US should have won the gold. Timeouts being missed are frustrating but still an occasional part of the game even today, so play on from that perspective. The umpire who stopped the game with 1s to go, opened up the whole can of worms, but the biggest failure was the the FIBA official who came from his seat in the grandstand to overrule the bench and umpires who were going to award the US with the win before he bullied them and over-ruled. He had zero authority or right to do so however, and should not have used his hierarchy to 'pull rank' so to speak. I understand the FIBA official lived to admit his wrongdoing, apologised and regretted it for many years. Also the big guy who made the winning shot, was a very humble and much loved guy who built great relationships with many of the US players and coaches before he tragically died in his 40s from cancer ...

    Even if the officials were correct in putting 3 secs back up the first time, these violations still occurred: 1. Doug Collins lay-up was goal-tending. In international play, you're allowed to knock ball off rim, but Soviet player slapped ball as it came off backboard. 2. Illegal timeout by Soviets. 3. Inbounder steps over baseline on his long pass before ball is touched. 4. Watch closely: Belov walks with ball before his shot. Steps sideways twice.

    • @aussiesurfer805
      @aussiesurfer805 28 дней назад

      (1) yes ... he also touched the net which is not allowed in FIBA with a ball in the immediate area.. Not sure what the sportsmen like or intentional foul rule was back then, but the tunnel by the Soviet could have been close to it ... --> 2 shots and the ball back (??). (2) No - it's been proven with film, and admitted by the bench officials, that Soviets did everything right in requesting the timeout but the bench official was to slow in blowing the horn between the free throws. However, they did make an illegal sub (by mistake it's widely thought), with the in-bounder having been permitted to sub in when they requested, but it should have been dis-allowed. That player had made the exact same pass to the same big guy for a last second win in a European game just a few weeks prior.. so you can see why Soviets anted him out there.. (3) Perhaps - looks like he may have - this was the umpires chance to claim his authority back by calling the violation and therefore allowing US to most probably win, as he had wanted to award the game to the US before being over-ruled and bullied by the senior FIBA official with no authority over the game . (4) You can't see in this footage, but to me it looked like he landed left-right, then pivoted on his grounded left towards the basket with his right and banking it in. Very standard and fundamental skill that I'd be surprised if he stuffed it up - especially back in those days when they drilled those basic skills to death at almost every practice ...

    That was an intentional very dangerous defensive hard foul from below with the offensive player in the air on way to the basket. Therefore, it should have been after the free throws, USA keeps the ball. That was the first cheat. The illegal time out, second cheat. The first additional 3 seconds, the third cheat. The second additional 3 seconds, the fourth cheat. Reply

But in 72' Soviets were destinied to win. Even with 1 point difference. By the way, Russians made a great movie about this story. Like really good. It's called "Three Seconds", you can find it in IMBD because it's translated from "движение вверх".

    The horrible and exceedingly pro-Soviet decision making at the end of the 1972 Munich Olympics Gold Medal basketball game between the USA and the Soviet Union was a perfect example of the old expression, "highway robbery"! Under the international rules governing amateur basketball back then, a coach of a team had to press a button which would light up at the scorer's table to request a timeout! The Soviet coach failed to press that button - so no timeout should have been awarded by the game officials, and even when they awarded the Soviet Union a timeout, no more than 1 second should have been put back on the clock not 3 seconds! The USA team was absolutely right - not only in their contention that they got royally screwed at the end of that game, but also in refusing to accept their silver medals!
