My Underrated Gem: the Louet Delta Countermarch Floor Loom
In this video, I talk about how I acquired and restored the biggest loom in my studio - the Louet Delta. I talk through how I found out about the loom, testing it out before I bought it, how I actually lucked my way into a used one, and the various steps I took the restore the loom once it was mine.

Louet Jane Loom - 16 Shaft Point Twill With Tempo Treadle
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Weaving a few picks on a 70cm Louet Jane 16-shaft. Draft is from Handweaving.net and is a 16-shaft point twill. Tempo Treadle system is from Lofty Fiber. Warp and weft are 10/2 perle/mercerized cotton from UKI.
Really lovely!❤
I love these type of videos 😍 I've learned a lot from your collection of videos already! 😍
The awful things I'd do to have the funds for your fiber art equipment. 😭 Lol I'm in West Virginia and can't even find local used equipment 😂lmao. Beautiful collection. Also, this fabric is so pretty. The moment you showed the yarn, I knew there'd be integrity issues with it but your final product is perfect! 😍😍 I love this channel, thanks for sharing. 😘
Enjoyed your video
Wow!!! Super happy that the algorithm put you in my queue!!! Brilliant work and peaceful voice! ❤
Very interesting and informative. Beautiful result.
10/2 for a blanket? How tight is the sett? Just did a Tom Knisley baby blanket with 4/2 set at 12. Very soft.
Adorable and talented! Beautiful blankie :)
😊I study fabric technology but never own a weaving machine. it's so nice to wave own fabric at home!
Loved watching this project and seeing your honest review of the project materials.
You are tall! 😂 You make the Delta look short...I'm 5'3" and have the treadle extenders, which makes it perfect for me, but I look pretty dang short sitting at her! 😂 Thanks for such a fun video - my Delta is my favorite!!
Nice to see a fan of Lofty Fiber here on RUclips. Just bought my new loom from them and was planning to do a simple straight draw and play around with it, but I got intrigued with your weaving -- it's a nice twist on straight draw. So thanks for inspiring me!
Very interesting and impressive!
Than you! It was a labor of love!
Now you just need a Megado
Well, I am currently taking donations of 32-shaft 130cm Megados with electronic lobby systems ;)
hey, it seems like you have not used louet provided reeds. is it so? it looks like plastic channel reeds like schacht or harrisville. Is it so?
I have a couple Louet provided reeds, but it turns out Louet stopped selling or making reeds (can’t recall which) recently so I’ve been making do with a few different sources and types.
Love this. I have a 45” 8 shaft Herald loom I have had to do some repairs on and it is a great fit for me. I’m almost 75 and have loved being thoroughly bitten by the weaving bug in the past 2 years. Keep on posting your “adventures “ !!💕💕
I honestly love doing repairs - it makes the loom more “yours” I think! I’ve never used a Herald loom but my spool rack is by Herald, actually. They’re no longer in business I think, right?
Very impressive love story 😁 I wish to have enough space to have something bigger then just a table loom 😂 From my experience It’s always great then you know how your “toy” work and be able to fix a problem. Me and my friends bought second/third hand knitting machines and restored them till really nice condition. And during restoration we improved our knowledge of knitting and how this machines work. Will wait for your next videos/projects 👋
Table looms and floor looms don’t take up vastly different amounts of space (especially if you’re using a stand). ;) I have my eyes on the used knitting machine market but can’t take the plunge quite yet!
BDE 😆
Big Delta Energy!
Such a good story. A true labour of love that only other weavers probably appreciate. ❤❤
Very true - so many people said “why don’t you just buy a new one” (until I told them the price tag of a new one!)
Thank you and great information on the Delta. I've been eyeballing one, but the pricetag honestly gives me a mild coronary. I've found a used 130-12shaft for just over $8k, but I'd have to have it freighted here without being able to see/touch it first. That makes me leery. And I'm glad you showed having to use full leg extension - that's not something I have given any thought to. Being just 5'5", my David 3 90cm (35.5") fits me perfectly both in height and width; with a 15" shuttle I have no issue throwing weft for the full width, though it can get tiring. Maybe on my next trip to Lofty Fiber in SC I'll give both the Delta and the Spring a try and see if either of them are a fit for me, as I really like the mechanics behind the countermarche system.
It’s definitely a hefty investment - I’ve seen a few used ones pop up in the Midwest recently for modest prices. Definitely try testing one out first!
I personally absolutely adore anything by handywoman shop. But I especially love her double bobbin shuttles and her slim closed bottom shuttles designed for rigid use. I am not exceptionally fond of her square cross-section ones but that’s personal preference. They do fit very well in end of warp situations. I just prefer to use the slim lines that are a little wide, then tall but narrow. Her woodwork, quality and choices of beautiful woods will blow your mind and the finish on those tools just be to be in your hand. I hope you get the chance to explore her work.
I haven't tried any of hers to my knowledge -- I'll have to add them to my list!
Sorry your Leclerc plastic seems so rough. I have a couple of these, and, while they are not my favourites, I do take them out to demos, since they can be dropped, and are my least expensive shuttles, should I lose one. Mine are both very smooth. I also like the Schacht and Leclerc end feed shuttles. Also the Schacht double shuttles.
I've found it a new home with a young weaver who's just starting out so it'll get some use and love that way instead
Thanks. That Flying Dutchman looks like one I need to try.
Oh I absolutely LOVE mine. I was just weaving on my 16-shaft Jane and my Schacht kept diving while the Dutchman worked just fine.
I am 70 years old and it makes my heart so happy to see young people weaving.
There are a few of us out there and I'm hoping my videos inspire more people to start weaving as well!
I started with Schacht shuttles and the curve in the ends just fits my hands perfectly. I have multiples in several sizes. But after watching your video, I’m tempted to try a Flying Dutchman since, like you, I love Louet weaving products. Thanks for a very informative video.
The Schacht ones are great! The Dutchman is just that little bit better for what I do often, I’ve found. Worth trying out!
Thank you for taking the time to share what you have been weaving. I'm new to weaving and have been totally inspired by the beautiful things you have produced. All the best.
Oh I’m so glad you liked what I’ve done!!! Thank you and best of luck!!
Thank you for your video. I love my bluster bay end feed shuttles!
Oh I love those too! I didn’t buy any before they stopped making them and I’m so angry I missed out!
I got my Leclerc EFS first, since I figured I had a Leclerc loom so I might as well. I don't dislike it, but I definitely prefer the Schacht EFS I have. I bought the Schacht when I started weaving overshot for the first time, and I found it definitely feels like it fits my hand better-especially on the throw. That having been said, I haven't used any art yarns or anything other than smooth cotton or linen, so I'm probably going to pick up another when I start that.
It’s such an interesting process to find what you like and why, isn’t it?
All I can say is WOW!!!!!! New subscriber!!!!
Thanks and welcome!
Great info thank you, I wonder what storage ideas you have for all your shuttles
I use a wall hanging sewn out of handwoven fabric. I just posted a photo over on Instagram to illustrate. :)
Learning on my Louet Jane.... how do you keep the boat shuttles from falling through the threads on the bottom of the shed?
I’ve found it varies by shuttle, warp, and sett. Good tension and a wider, more blunt shuttle helps to not dive through. :)
You should do a ranking or talk about pirns, quills, bobbins you have. I mainly have Schacht and leclerc bobbins that came with the shuttles i acquired. Quills and pirns always concerned me because I don't think my shuttles work with pirns and quills the lack of sides always weirded me out
I only really have the Schacht bobbins and pirns - haven’t adventured much beyond those. My quills are mostly made of printer paper cut down to size. The trick to winding quills is to build up towards the center while staying away from the edges and hiiiiiiiiiigh tension.
My Shachts , 11", open bottom, boat shuttles are my favourite, but even in that rack of shuttles, I have my favourite grab, Charolotte. But then I short muscular hands, and only deal with 36 epi fiber. The plastics don't have enough weight for my throw and drag too much. Beyond those, my personally least favourites are the ski shuttles.
I’ve not used ski shuttles much but they are a whole other beast!!
Thank you so much for doing this! The info on the Dutchman was what I was looking for. At the moment, I only have 11" Schacht open bottom shuttles but finding I have to throw harder for wider warps when I max out my David 3, which is a bit fatiguing. I've been wanting something with bit more heft so I don't have to throw as hard (and the closed bottom give too much drag for me), but on the downside, I'm hesitant to invest in another bobbin/pirn/quill design. Too many decisions. LOL. I too dislike the stick shuttles, but use them when I only have single pick or two to throw. I also load them up with scrap yarn for my headers to keep my shuttle bobbins free. Think I may take the plunge and order either a Dutchman or End Feed.
The good news is that you can use the same bobbins on the Dutchman so that investment is minimal at least.
Oh, thanks for that tidbit!@@TheTallWeaver
You persuaded me. Ordered my Dutchman today; should be here by the end of the week.@@TheTallWeaver
Interesting! I hate stick shuttles. They were surely invented to put people off weaving.
They’re certainly approachable and affordable if nothing else 😅
@@TheTallWeaver true, but I could say the same about chop sticks 🤣
#10 looks like an early version of the Glimakra Oxeburg shuttle. I have two, which I load 6” quills on for wide blankets. The Glimakra Damask shuttles are much thinner versions of your other Glimakras, and only accept 4” quills. Similarly to you, I love my Schacht end feed shuttle. I’ve been eying the Louet Flying Dutchman though, I really love weaving with super quiet quills. Thank for sharing 😊
Ahh! Thank you for the info! I can’t say how much I love the Dutchman - the only reservation I have is if you have a narrow shed like with a small jack loom.
Are you using the Louet fly shuttle in this video? (without the boxes)
Close! I’m using the Louet Flying Dutchman - I love it for thick wefts.
I love the baby blanket and I appreciate your walking us through the process from the beginning to the finished piece. I am sure that the blanket will be long cherished by the mama and baby. I am new to 4 shaft weaving and am eager to find some patterns for beginners. A week ago, I welcomed a gently loved Jane into our home. It was already warped for a community event' so I lucked out in not having to do that. I have some basic 4 shaft pattern instructions, so I have been "playing" to get the feel of it. I find a lot of inspiration from online but am building my own library. I have many tapestry books but only a couple on 4 or 8 shaft weaving. Can you recommend a good beginner book or two that I should have in my library?
I always find myself going to Anne Dixon’s 4-shaft book and Strickler’s 8-shaft book for draft inspiration. For actual instruction on weaving, Jane Stafford’s School of Weaving is how I learned everything!
OMG :)
I have not understanding of the process but I love the way you explain everything and of course I love the blanket! If the thread broke during the weaving, isn't a danger that blanket will get holes in it?
It actually becomes much stronger once it’s washed and agitated-as long as the new and old threads are secure and overlap a bit it’s quite sturdy :)
Beautiful blanket. I love the colors and the pattern.
Thank you!! I really like how it turned out.
I like your herd of looms, my mum has the louet jane computer assist, she does her own designs on the computer and shes 90 years old! She's better at design than I am thats for sure. I enjoy doing Huck lace also, and I also made a sleeveless vest with honeycomb using cotton Chenille in weft and a red brown wool/linen warp and it all turned out lovely and warm too. Cheers!
That sounds amazing! How did you account for the differences in handwoven vs commercial fabric in your sewing the vest?
@@TheTallWeaver well, I didn't, I made it up as I went. I have a dress makers dummy that I've stuffed to resemble my beach ball shape, and I have one of those things, (not sure of the name) you push into corners or other odd shaped so that you can then trace it onto wood etc. I push it over my neck or where there are curves like that then I have the right shape which I then put onto my material that I've made. I know it sounds confusing but that carpenters tool is like having the dressmakers French curve tool only cheaper😁, I already had that in my husband's tool kit, shhh don't tell him, and I don't have French curve tools. Then its just a matter of measuring the lengths and widths etc, it probably doesn't make sense sorry. Oh and my mum's loom isn't the louet Jane but it looks like it, its the small dobby but she'd love to get the megado but its like $20,000 or more. Cheers From Australia!
Another Jane fan!! I loved hearing about all of your weaving! 👏👏👏
I'm not a weaver - yet - but sure love watching folks make glorious things on their looms. Thanks for sharing this.👍💪
One of us! One of us! Hahah! Glad you liked it!
What a beautiful blanket you've made for your friend's baby! Wow!❤
That blanket is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your process, start to finish. It's always a joy to see how other weavers take on a project.
Thanks!! It's so hard to share weaving with others in person, but thank goodness we have the internet!
Wow I had no idea of the process of weaving so intricate, what a beautiful blanket. Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you! It's a lot of steps but I love it all!
Wow! Amazing work! Mind blowing amount of weaving done. Thank you so much
Thanks so much! I just don't know how to relax haha.
So jealous of your loom line-up! You make me seriously consider purchasing a Spring… 😅
One of us! One of us! One of us!
Do you have a video on how to make the twisted fringe?
Sorry, I don't! But you can check out Curmudgeon66 or KellyCasanova on here and I think they can help you out with their videos! :)
