We are an auto racing team based in Denver, Colorado. We race with many organizations including the SCCA, RMVR, and the 24 Hours of Lemons. Our latest project is taking a 1st generation Honda Insight and engine swapping it with a Suzuki GSXR-1000 superbike engine.
Our Racecar LIVE Stream Overview! | *How* We Live Stream Our Races | TEAM #314 Turbo-Encabulators
After over a year of trying to make a fancy video, I just decided to hit record on the GoPro and start talking about how we live stream our races. This is a VERY birds eye view of the entire system, but this topic can easily take hours to cover entirely.
Be sure to tune in to our next Live Stream from the 24 Hours of Lemons race at Road America next week!

Fortunate timing for Jeff set up the perfect opportunity to get 6 quick passes in on the front straight at Road America (which we are sure was quite confusing for the passed cars).

hay i have a group of friends who were thinking about doing lemons. how were you doing live cams from your car during races?
Clear as mud. Totally kidding, great overview of the core systems to make it all work! A lucid chart diagram (or similar) would be helpful for those who like pretty pictures
Brilliant work!
Thanks!
I was the driver in the 806 car that spun in 3 at about the 1:03:20 mark. Had a laugh at the “it was huge to the rear view” lol. I Drove out of it though. Self reported to HQ anyway. Gave me a drive through, no penalties.
Hahaha, good on ya for self reporting, and thanks for finding the highlight! I have higher bit-rate video stored from the car, so perhaps it'll make it to a highlight real, haha.
Teach me your live stream ways!! This is fantastic!!
We've got a brief overview of the setup on our channel. It's far from simple, but it gets the job done haha.
Hey, great work guys, awesome livestream and awesome race!!!!
I'm pretty sure the NA Miata is the only car that can race 24h of lemons one day and then Lime Rock Historics the next. Once again, Miata Is Always The Answer
Hey, looking good! Have a great race tomorrow!
The only thing I understood was "Sean here..."
You guys have great race videos. Thanks for sharing your set-up.
Fantastic video, thank you so much for laying out the topology, so great to see how you're tackling this! Couple of questions: 1. Are you doing anything UPS-wise to keep the devices, PC, and the modem running briefly while refueling or while the kill switch is off? We're running an onboard PC, cameras, radios, and a Pepwave as well (dude that thing takes FOREVER to boot). My last autocross livestream went really well due to a new battery pack/UPS (a Jackery Explorer 300 Plus), keeping everything going without the car needing to idle or power everything from the car's battery. I have mixed feelings about a battery continuing to power things during times when the car kill switch is turned off, so if I can make some changes in the name of safety then I may take the opportunity to do so. 2. Would you mind sharing what make/model of camera(s) you've found to be success with? We're using a very Lemonsy mix of GoPro knock-offs, but three of them require a physical touch every time they're power cycled to put them in PC webcam mode. It would be awesome to have IP cams boot right up and feed the OBS scene, no button presses required. PoE is an awesome way to approach this, great work for sure! Thank you so much for sharing your setup, I'd love to put up a vid of ours as well. It's so great seeing how you approached this, really appreciate it! Good luck at Road America! May your brake pads last and your tires remain grippy!
1. I'll send you a message on Facebook with the details, but long story short, yes, a sort of UPS can be used. Small batteries are allowed per lemons rules, as long as they don't power the rest of the car. 2. I like the REVODATA cameras on Amazon. I've used most of their types, but have been settling on the models that have IR capabilities, mainly because that means they have an IR shutter to open and close a filter. The 'non-IR' versions still see IR, but they don't have a filter, so natural daylight looks horrid. Also, the more robust ones from REVODATA are great, like these: a.co/d/a03RR42 However, they are a bit big. There is one USB camera still used on the car for the pedal cam. The original plan was to use all USB cameras, but the USB bus couldn't handle it, hence the switch to IP PoE cameras. Thanks for watching! I'll be at the HPR race as crew with the purple Miata, we just won't have our miata there, so I'd be happy to chat further about it with you then if you'd like.
Awesome stuff Sean!
Thanks Leo!
Hey, it was awesome seeing you guys out there yesterday, we were in the HHR. Thanks for catching some outside shots as you were passing us! :) We'll catch you next time and swing by to say hello!
It was cool seeing you too! I meant to come by and say hi, but we were deep into diagnosing an engine power issue which still remains unsolved. We may or may not be at the HPR race in September, as we will be at Road America the weekend prior. It'll be a tight and exhausting turn around if we do both.... but maybe!
Hey, just a quick question about how you're pulling in the position data, class position data, etc. Are you using the Race Monitor API and making a call to that or is there another data source you're using? Thanks so much, love the vids! Let us know if you'll be at HPR in Sept for the race, we *should* be there in our TMNT HHR.
Yep you got it, we are using the race monitor API. We have some scripts running that then use that data to create text files that OBS reads and uses to display the data.
@@temeritymotorsports1152 Awesome, thanks so much!
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that tobacco companies are not aloud to sponsor auto racing teams,as I observed a shell ,Marlboro sponsored car.
Really great driving by Shane. WOW
Great video, how did you finish in class? I might be dating myself, but I remember when the June Sprints were a really big deal, lots of spectators on thr hills
Great job actually. Excellent job of keeping the momentum up! Especially 8 to 12
Great video! If you don't mind me asking, how are you able to record your radio chatter and the race control radios to put in the video?
Maybe one click too much on the rear wing...hence, understeer + insufficient top speed. Just IMHO.
Well in this case, I was renting the car from a friend. The engine in the car was incredibly tired (ebay engine), and was completely filling two catch cans each session. The rings had seen better days to say the least. These cars also used to be classed in FB, but due to dwindling numbers, they got shoved into FA with Swift 014s, 016s, etc. They simply aren't competitive in FA.
@@temeritymotorsports1152 Most important is that you enjoyed the race.
Interesting that it wasn't an American FCY aka European SC but rather just a local yellow. Do smaller U.S. series not use FCY for everything like IMSA, etc. do?
I expected much more speed on the front straight. Not a criticism, but I'm just surprised.
Looks like it was uphill.
Getting passed like standing still by true FA cars...This car should not be in FA, and I respect the heck out of Stohr.
There should be FA2--F1000s, Pro Mazdas and F3s. Any of those cars could win.
@@dalev.186 Concur, true FA's are in a class of their own.
Very cool overlaying race control radio! Great video, subscribed!
Thanks!
@@temeritymotorsports1152 I thought RA corner net wasn't broadcast but hard wired, but its been several years since I raced there. Certainly you aren't getting that in your helmet but in the crew chiefs, ya?
@@kwasg3 We think it may be hardwired, but eventually it is broadcasted over radio. We do get it in our helmets, except in a few portions of the track where coverage from our repeater is poor.
How did you do in the race?
Ended up P11 in class, P22 overall. Would have been about P10 overall had the transponder power not been bumped off accidentally for about 9 laps 😅
Easy to follow tutorial? Links to products in the description? No annoying ads? This is about as good as it gets!
Thanks for sharing your race. This layout of cameras and performance stats is great! Hope you have continued good racing tomorrow.
What were you testing ? New calipers?
New gearbox, mostly. The 5th gear synchro went out on the one we used during the true-24, and with Road America coming up so quickly we decided to swap gearboxes rather than attempt a rushed rebuild. We were also testing another new TeLemontry board revision, a new antenna for the UHF voice repeater, some video streaming tweaks, a new brake master cylinder brace, and some different (higher mu) brake pads.
Nice heel’n’toe!! Thank you for this vid! Awesome watch 😊
This is awesome data capture and radio overlay! Great racing with you #81
Great racing you guys! Thanks very much for broadcasting!! -Team Fruit Loops #21. @6:10:35
Our pleasure, thanks for watching. Great racing with you as well!
@@temeritymotorsports1152and hopefully the brake rotors work for you. ;)
@@Aleckzandr Yes, thanks again for those!
Note that standard RTV silicone is not suitable for electronics and may cause corrosion, hence the electronics grade sealant.
Was 314 actually in the lemons race or were they there to record it? Because that car was over qualified to be in the lemons. There were teams that built the car from the ground up, in 4 months time. Never been to the race before and they showed up 12 hrs away and they did a really good job. Those type of teams need recognition also.
Thank you!! ❤️❤️
#314 is one of the faster cars out there but in Lemons there's a place for everyone. It's more fun having lots of cars on the track, some slower than you are and some faster. Teaches all of us how to pass and be passed. And we can also dream of some day being as fast as #314 is. PS - thanks #314 for sharing your insights on how to create lighted number boards. Appreciated the Betty Crocker recipe style along with the included shopping list. Bill Schaefer #21
@@billschaefer5686 We indeed love racing with Lemons because of the more relaxed nature of everyone there too. Sure, we want to win, but we also know it means nothing if we do. Our car is simply a 'canvas' of sorts for us engineers to mess with, like making the custom TeLemontry system from the ground up, the streaming setup, the lights, and much more. Funnily enough, we haven't touched the powertrain (it's completely stock). We've seen how expensive and time consuming it can get to go down the rabbit hole of adding more power. We like to use our resources to try and make it as reliable as possible (and amassing a comprehensive set of spares). Another fun fact is that we were 12th fastest with regard to best lap time. It is far from the fastest car on the field, but we just try to keep it on track. It sure isn't a slow car either, but man, Towmater is a beast (they make us feel like we are standing still!) We were bummed for them when they had a mechanical at the end of the race, as they have put a massive amount of work into that car. Glad the number board tutorial helped! We saw a large handful of teams that went with that method, and it seemed to be the favorite of the corner works and race control. It was great racing with 'yall!
any clue what timestamp the crossfire spin in front of your team was? we were watching live during that and it was a smooth operator avoidance
There were 3 incidents with that car that meet that description lol..... Do you have any sort of time frame to narrow it down?
First spin (of three) in front of us by #12 (the Crossfire) was at about 2:28:30 in the video, roughly 1:55 pm clock (wall) time.
Great job guys!
Nobody heeds yellow flags anymore. Not even in karting.
100mph next to an active car recovery? Why is there no yellow flag or safety car?
There is a yellow entering the kink. 100mph in these cars is very controllable, as the typical race speed through that turn would be about 135mph. You can see I lift off the throttle for the duration of the incident. Slowing too much could also be a problem, since many other drivers that weekend weren't even bothering to lift at all (and even continued racing through multiple yellows), which actually lead to some serious incidents.
11 was waving and the drivers loobyed for more green flag laps about 5 years ago. Safety and the cars were well off line
this shocked me too. they definitely need to adapt the FIA rules of no heavy vehicles on track with cars
@d.k.1974 It was a request by the drivers a few years back for more green flag laps. There was a waving yellow at 11 all the drivers were informed on their radio and the recovery vehicles and car was well off line.If the situation had been at track out you would have seen a full course yellow. I've been a Marshall for 37 years and once worked for RA everything was under control
As an old corner worker I really enjoy hearing the communication between control and the corner workers. Brings back lots of memories.
why isnt he taking his right hand off the wheel when selecting gears ?
Paddle shift. There haven't been shift levers in (modern) race cars for quite a few years now... Many with electronic no-lift upshifts and auto blip downshifts. (Damn kids these days think they know how to drive... Why, back in MY day...)
Formula Atlantic cars are allowed to have paddle shift sequentials. Formula Enterprise have those shifters that you're thinking of.
not turn one but two ?
I notice that more folks are adding the corner net audio to their in-car: An excellent training tool for everyone.
Lots of familiar voices on this one
Props for staying that right foot with that wreck in the kink. I can't count the number of times I've had people just go through a yellow flag and you can tell they weren't lifting in the slightest.
Yea, the P1/P2 race with the FE2 car had a major crash as I'm sure you are aware. The driver(s) involved didn't lift under a waving yellow at the kink and then plowed right into the FE2 center track. I'd like to think that I respect the kink.... it seems others don't as much.
Yeah I saw a clip of that yesterday, that was brutal. I’m a bit unfamiliar with Formula Atlantic, is the pace comparable with a Formula 4 or USF2000 car? Or is it sort of in no lane land?
@@NolanRempel It really depends on which FA we are talking about nowadays. The car I'm driving in this video was previous an FB car until it got merged with FA a few years ago due to low turnout. A 'true' FA would generally be a Swift 016, Swift 014, Ralt RT41. Pro Formula Mazdas also run in the class. To your point, in the simulator, we feel that the USF2000 is closest to the F1000 chassis. The F3 is probably closer to the Swifts and such (though heavier than them). I've never driven a Swift 014 or 016, so I can't speak from personal experience there.
Ah, fair enough!
Lifting in the kink can prove treacherous enough.
Are you planning on uploading more clips from your racing exploits, or full races altogether?
I'm working on the full races and quali sessions, but they are just larger to edit and upload. The Sunday race has been uploaded tonight though!
So I saw!
Was it in like a blind spot to the marshal post? I find it nuts that they didn't seem to notice it for over a lap.
In the corner marshals defense, it was around 1230am, so the race was just past its halfway point after starting at 12pm that day. I know I'd be struggling to stay awake if I were them 😅
I know a lot of the time marshals trade out in shifts, guess they were at the end of a long haul lol
Was that the radio comms between the marshals and RC? Don't get to hear that often that's pretty cool
Yep, we run a custom built repeater at races to listen to the flag net. It's very helpful as a driver or crew.
Wish more people or series did that, it's always cool to get a more behind-the-scenes look with stuff like that.
Is this typical of the number of offs & crashes at the June Sprints?
It seemed excessive this year, but I don't have the data to really compare the various years.
I was at Road America on this day. Sitting at turn 8 before the carousel during one of the races I saw more spins and offs than I’ve seen the past few times I’ve been to June Sprints. Same when I was hanging out by turn 3. I wonder if the new track surface and drivers unfamiliarity had anything to do with it.
@@hbsquirrel Interesting! It definitely seemed to be much more than past years, but we also didn't have the capabilities to listen to the flag net in years past, so when we were in the garage, we didn't really know what was going on during other sessions. This year, we were always listening. We also noticed a large lack of respect for local standing and waving yellows, which led to some serious incidents and near misses.
New pavement causes different sensations for drivers
That was crazy, luckily he didn't roll back onto the track
If it was the blue and yellow FE2, he did pull across the track and was hit by a P1 car totally the P1. Thankfully both drivers were relatively ok.
@@ericdsrracer Different incident: the video above depicts the Sunday FA/FC/FX race, while the P1 vs FE2 incident was in the P1/P2/FE2 race on Saturday. Still scary regardless, and completely agree that it's great that both of those drivers were OK.
@@teuobk Thank you very much for the clarification. Watching a few of the videos I’m in awe (not in a good way) of how cars are not slowing for the local yellows in the kink and are whizzing by the safety vehicles. 😮
That is one of the worst re-entries I've ever seen. Driver of #27 Black should not be behind the wheel.
he clearly didnt mean to re-enter the track, he was sliding
or hes stupid
@@mikew6535 Well he was sliding off into the runoff area. If he had kept his wheels pointed straight and locked it down with the brakes, he likely wouldn't have turned back onto the track. Once under control, then he'd be able to re-enter after the pack had passed.
Both feet in. Trying to save it at that point can only make it worse.
