Tech reviews in the Canadian prairies; Sharing my experience owning an electric vehicle in Saskatchewan
Tesla Cam: Car Fire in Parking Lot at Dakota Dunes Casino, Whitecap Saskatchewan
Watch a car burn down, captured by my Tesla Model 3's sentry camera recording. Happened around 7pm on Sunday March 21, 2021 at Dakota Dunes Casino and Hotel in Whitecap SK. We travelled out from Saskatoon to have dinner at the Moose Wood Grill restaurant, when someone came rushing into the lobby and yelled: "There's a car on fire!!" I ran outside and saw a gas SUV, burning in the parking lot. The owner was distraught, but ok. She had collected her important belongings out of the vehicle. One guest was not able to get to their truck soon enough, and it eventually caught on fire too, as the fire department arrived.

Honest question…would you use this vehicle at -35°C if you had a daily commute between Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. Please answer this honestly?
My X3M lost exactly 0.000% of its range when I left it outside last winter for 2 weeks in a parking lot at the airport at freezing temperature for the entire time. It's efficiency also did not change at all.
Nice tent garage. Where did you get that
My Toyota Corolla just works. I don't agonize over range or ever even think about it. Also, President Trump says not to buy them. He said (with a contemptuous expression) "Let's take a trip to Idaho, to get some potatoes ... you have to stop six times." and then "They don't work in the cold and they don't go far, but otherwise they're fine I guess."
That’s not cold, bring it to Alaska your battery will freeze and won’t start
Boycott all electric cars and trucks. Do not buy them. Fix your old ICE vehicle. Crush the mandates!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you be interested in doing a video review and installation of aftermarket products? If so, could you please provide your email address so we can talk further?
Very quick heated up at 4 minutes. Thats the time I take looking outside my home at the wild nature and snow while I am daydreaming.
Is this a car without the heat pump heater? I wonder if the heat pump version on newer models would struggle in +34. That is very cold.
thi is not a testa man
And yet, rideshare drivers in Chicago can't grasp this simple concept. To the delight of Fox News.
I remember when life could bring -34c, the good ol’ days
What!!?? No donuts!!??
That rabbit at the start of the video is instant love ❤
so same problem and the same poor solution? over and over, come on now.
Looks like you stopped making videos. Curious to know if you are still holding on Tesla. Thanks.
Yes, this is our fifth winter with the Model 3. Loving it still. I need to make an update video.
@@SaskTechIdeas❤ loves hearing this. Please record a follow up video with your Tesla experience. Could be a short and casual video about the pros and cons of owning Tesla in extreme winter temperatures like is SK.
I do 184 km round trip eveyday and wonder if I will be okay driving mainly on the highway doing 120?
Yep you should be able to do that.
What kind of tires do you use?
In winter, Micheline X-Ice. Just bought a new set for our fifth winter
do we need a garage to park or i can charge in parking? i live in regina
You can get away with parking outside, just make sure you can plug in, even to a 15A at minimum.
Does that one have the heat pump?
Nah, it's an older model 3.
Not this one, but we flipped it and bought a ‘22 with a heat pump and the efficiently in cold weather is significantly better.
As far as longevity goes, batteries like being cold. That battery will last 20 years without a doubt
Is this the LFP or LR
Not LFP. It’s LI
Tesla's are so boring looking, they all look the same, it's like owning an IPhone, no individual personality, just same old same old.
-17 Bahahahahaha, that's nothing, wait till you leave it out, uncovered, unplugged in minus 35 for a couple of days.
Wouldn't be an issue.
Hi does your car have heat pump like model y ????
The new Model 3s do
**Main Takeaways:** - **Temperature Impact:** At -17°C, the Tesla Model 3 lost about 9% of battery range overnight, with an actual effective loss of 5% due to cold affecting battery performance. - **Battery Readings:** The cold reduced the available range temporarily, indicated by a snowflake icon and a blue line on the display. - **Energy Use:** Sentry mode, which was active, used more energy to keep the cameras defrosted. - **Range Loss:** In-town driving in extreme cold showed about a 30% loss of range. - **Pre-Heating:** Pre-heating the car helped improve comfort and battery efficiency. - **Overall:** Despite energy loss, Tesla batteries handle cold weather relatively well, with less impact than commonly feared.
Not to be rude, but the fact that you left Sentry Mode on completely invalidated this test. Sentry mode can drain like 4% of your battery overnight. To have a real sense of cold-related idle battery drain, you need to leave out any other source of battery consuption.
The coldest I've had here in the US where I live was -37 C The coldest place i've been in the mainland USA was Peter Sinks UT. It was -55 C in the bowl. A girl got frost bite taking her gloves off for more than 1 1/2 minutes. Wind just killed her fingers.
Do they have indoor DIY car washes in Saskatoon?!?!? so cool...
Thank you so much for such an informative video. How many miles can it go one a full charge in winter in your opinion? Any heat pump in yours?
We have a heat pump in our current model 3, we traded up in 2022, it’s much more efficient. Long range will go something like 300kms (185miles) in winter, depending on temp and winds and stuff.
I really need a -30 rwd lfp test
If the car is plugged in charging and you get in and try to select drive, does it let you ?
No.
But then you only have a range of 150 miles.
Years later I wonder if people regret looking like they was trying out for a part on the ninja turtles
Maybe I got the part and am now a rich movie star
Would love to see an updated video if you have a newer Tesla with a heat pump. Also range lose during winter.
For those of you who aren't from somewhere that gets really cold.... when you can hear the snow squeak under your feet.... it's cold.
This is the non heat pump model either right??? Wild. Ottawa here, so definitely a concern as I venture into the tesla buying rabbit hole.
Correct. We’ve since upgraded, traded out 2019 for a 2022 with heat pump, efficiency is even better
LOVELY
Super helpful video. Thank you!
Bjorn Nyland did this in -36 with old model X... He spent the night in the middle of nowhere in the car and drove away in the morning.
I have been considering a Tesla and live in Northern New England but do not have a garage. While winters aren't as drastic as they used to I am still concerned about leaving a Tesla outside for its entire life. Do you have PPF on this vehicle?
You better get that long range model - you conveniently left out how much battery and charge capacity you lose in cold weather.
I have a question: If you leave your car plugged in overnight to a level 1 charger(120 volt outlet) when its -30, will it still charge at the same speed(about 3 km per hour).
No, it uses a bunch of the energy to keep the battery warm and maintain current charge… so at like -30C it just stays at the same charge level.
I still see comments on Tesla videos from knuckle dragging mouth breathers about how Teslas dont work in cold weather...their willful ingorance is exhausting and infuriating.
Starting your Tesla looked easy, how about the driving range in such extreme conditions? Will it give you 400 km fully charge ?
HEY, LETS HAVE A 4 YEAR REVIEW.
weird in south germany with like -15, the teslas didnt even start
According to who? I live in northern Norway and we've had no such problems.
Loose hood and scarf = fake Canadian
If I lived in that kind of climate and it was my only car, I'd probably stick to a gas car until the battery chem/tech improves.
You forgot to recommend the most important part of owning an EV: Home lvl2 charging.
