Blessed to Fly
США
Добавлен 15 окт 2020
My dream of flying has come true and I would just like to share it with others that have that passion, interest, or just like to see amazing views you can't get from ground level. My unusual employment and living situation has necessitated me becoming a super commuter and fly serious cross country flights both VFR and IFR. Maybe some of my videos and stories will be helpful to others. I too plan to be learning along the way.

Night IFR approach after a long cross country flight through some rough IMC weather pushing my personal minimums. See if you can catch the main thing I could have done different / better. Single pilot IFR approach in gusty weather. Ride along in the right seat of a Piper Comanche 180 and hang on. Actual IFR approaches in IMC with a full bladder are not recommended!

Fall IFR Flight to Chicago, Punching through Clouds
Very informative and well done.😃
Thx. Glad it was helpful.
The State of Illinois is looking to make Bult Field a cargo airport. IDIT has put out a RFQ for developers that can design, build, and operate a cargo airport. Applications accepted until July 2025 with semifinalists selected Fall 2025.
Is the 375 limited to only RNAV approaches?
Yes, since it does not have navcoms it cannot do ILS and localizers and only does RNAV, LPV, plus gps guided visual approaches.
Still working well for you? My club just installed GNC 355. Similar.
yes, no problems with it. Still consider it one of my best investments into that plane.
Why did you sell? Did you get anything new?
8192P is will be posted for sale again soon. Waited over 4 months for fuel tanks to arrive now waiting on installation then I'll repost it. Yes, I bought a twin for the longer, more challenging flights in my new job. Needed to go faster and 2 engines is much more comforting in hard IR, crossing the Great Lakes, over mountains, etc. Sorry, been too busy to get back to making a video. Hope to this summer.
My bonanza has a hat rack too, maybe in the 60s they all wore hats.
A more civilized time I guess, except for the ashtrays. Bonanza’s are super cool. I am a new Beech owner myself.
Your not to far from me I got my pilot license in Valpo and I leave my airplane in Griffith I am really struggling with learning my 375 garmin thank you for the video
glad it was helpful. I am learning a new plane with a 750 in it. Learning the 375 helped. Also download the garmin training app. Helps with getting familiar. I did so with the 375 and now the 750. best wishes. Scott
I have a Twin Comanche and my autopilot is on my personal minimum equipment list. If it's not working I'm not going. Thanks for sharing.
Good day Sir. when using foreflight do i need a Sentry to get weather and traffic alerts or G375 gives that foreflight via Bluetooth?
No, this gps has ads-b in and out and Bluetooths it to you iPad or device you are running ForeFlight on. You won’t need a Sentry or Stratus (unless you really want redundancy). I sold my Stratus. All I had to do was connect during preflight just like I used to do with my stratus. hope that helps.
Thanks for your quick reply. That info helps,Happy flying God bless @@BlessedtoFly
@@BlessedtoFly Does this mean iPads without GPS can be used just as easily?
@@JabariHunt Haven't tried without gps but should work as long as it can connect with bluetooth. Only benefit I could think of is you can upload your flight plan. Not sure how adsb weather and traffic would work without gps but it might.
Gorgeous plane, this type is always on my short list and you seem to have taken great care of her. I'm also guessing based on how you run the engine that you're a student of Mike Busch, I'm so relieved that you run her right!
thanks. yes, the Mike Busch explanation of how to run these engines made sense to me. Later I learned John Deakin had been writing and teaching this long ago.
Sorry to hear you're selling the plane! Best of luck and wishes on your future endeavors. Someone is going to get a great airplane!
thx Andrew. It’s been a great plane for me. Getting close on something faster with Tks. You still get to fly with Bob. Love that guy. Learned a lot from him.
@@BlessedtoFly been slacking with continuing my training but I still try to drop in to see Bob from time to time. Our 180 is in for Annual and getting some work done so I'm itching to get back at it!
Scott, congratulations and best of luck on your new endeavors. Appreciated your flights in 92Papa as I have a '61 250. I laughed when you mentioned your fuel burn at 7+ gph. What's your next plane? Based on your mission, looks like a Bonanza turbo, A36, B36TC, Turbo Mooney or maybe a Piper Malibu (pressurized) or Matrix (unpressurized). Fly safe.
Bonanza has become the primary target. I want a robust airfraime, fast, some weather capability, and cheap. Those don't all go together though. Turbo Mooney and Bonanza seem to be the best options. Looked at Columbia 400 too but concerned with the maintenance cost. Would like to buy everything I need at once but also looking at finding the right airframe and upgrading later. Thanks for watching!
I wish I was in a little bit better place financially. I would be coming to take a look in a heart beat. Good luck Brother!
Thanks
Is your plane sold?
no, not for sale yet. planning to find my next plane first. Maybe in September if things go well.
Congratulations on the new adventures. Looking forward to the next videos and new plane whenever that happens. Chapter 260 at C56 will miss you and thanks for your contributions there. God Bless you.
thanks! I do hope to make it back and drop in on my chapter 260 friends someday. Maybe a young eagles event too. You all have an excellent EAA chapter there an I was glad to be part of it for a while.
I was glad to see a new video posted by you! I’ve enjoyed your previous videos and happy to see the Comanche is still flying. Good luck in your search for a plane to fit your new mission. I’d be very interested in your Comanche when the time comes to let her go. Blue skies and tailwinds!
thanks. Video equipment, editing software and my laptop all let me done the past 4 or 5 times I tried to make one. GoPro freezing has ruined a few. probably should get another one. timeline on putting her up for sale depends on buying a new one. Could be early September but could be next year if the one I’m looking at falls through again.
Thanks for Sharing Brother. New chapters in life are always a challenge but yet exciting. Having our Lord's direction and Comfort definitely makes it easier though. Like others have said, it's a little hard to give advice on a new aircraft without knowing budget. Also how many seats are you looking for? Its hard to beat the little experimental aircraft when it comes to speed and efficiency ie. a lancair or glasair RG.
Yes, budget is very important. Realistically, $200 - $300+K to find something with this capability. I have a plane targeted now but am not going to say anything about it until a deal is made and prebuy completed. Last one fell through.
I can relate to this a little bit. I recently sold my airplane. Of course I did it because I found a better airplane to get into. Still it was hard to watch her go. From this side of the internet, it looks like you're making the right decision. As far as XC airplanes go, I don't know enough about your budget or desires to make any rational advice. I know that my current airplane won't be my last. Ultimately I'd like to build an airplane. 2 seats, rotax engine, 200 kts. And the JMB VL3 and the Porto Risen come to mind. But I don't know if 200 kts is fast enough for you.
200 kts would be ideal. I have to admit I don't know much about the experimental planes. There are some great Lancair and Glassair models out there but they lack the deicing capability typically. The Columbia 350 / 400s look very interesting though but prices are up there. Yes, budget is very important. Realistically, $200 - $300+K to find something with this capability. I have a plane targeted now but am not going to say anything about it until a deal and prebuy are made. Last one fell through.
Watching.. thinking hmmm, getting married perhaps? Maybe you could sell it to Jimmys World?✅
I think Jimmy buys at a super low price to fix and sell. I don't think this guy would get what he could for this plane from Jimmy
nope, one wife is enough. Job change.
Are you going to the ICS Convention in August at Kansas City?
unfortunately my work schedule is keeping me away from a lot of fun airplane stuff. schedule is pretty packed the next few months.
Sloppy pilot, poorly trained.
Well I try to learn from my mistakes and strive to get better every year. Have a good day.
Sir you can do away with that loud azz noise you're calling music.
Sorry you didn't care for it Ron. In the editing software I thought I turned it down enough but not for everyone I see. Music options for us little RUclipsrs are limited due to copyright concerns. The choice isn't great but was the best I could do at the time. Thanks for your comment and have a great day.
No offense meant but your music is quite load. Hard to hear your conversation.
none taken. I’m still learn both piloting and editing. The music ends before take off too. Thanks for your comment.
Nice 180. I have a lot of time in a 250 and in a 180 Mooney. Both engines the best. Fly higher. I flew the Mooney at 11.5 from STL to S. Jersey in 6 hrs , no wind or clouds on 36 of the 48 gals. I was 60 years younger then with a better bladder.
Thanks. I like to be 9K - 11K if the winds are good. I started carrying the emergency relief bottle but haven't had to use it yet but I have had a few landings I wished I did!
I’ve always enjoyed your content! I have a Comanche 180 as well, N6788P in Bend Oregon.
Thanks Miles. Bet you have gorgeous country to fly it around out there. Would love to make it West someday.
Landing looked good to me , especially after 6.5 hours flying! Thank you for sharing.
thanks Gerry. The magic of GoPro stabilization dampened my bounce. Was just at BULT for a chapter meeting. There is a group of guys restoring a 1946 Bellanca CruisAir in a hanger. Really cool. Check them out next time you are down there.
@@BlessedtoFly one of the restorers; Bob, is in our EAA chapter. He gave us an update on the progress last month. Looks like a REAL project. The are making good progress with the help of a patient A&P.
Love the Comanche … amazing my Mooney has the same speed and fuel burn but can’t carry the load of a Comanche!
thanks. l do love the room inside too. Still tough for any of us to fill the seats and fly very far though. Fortunately it’s usually just me and all the gas I can fit at the cheapest stop!
I think the pier is for the runway approach lights. Great to see new videos! I need to get more out as well! Safe flying.
You are absolutely right! Rw 18R has an ILS approach and the plate shows MALSR lighting. I didn't think of that at the time. In my little mind I was thinking that was where ATC went fishing on their breaks. Always glad I have you guys to keep me straight.
@@BlessedtoFly I would have probably thought the same thing. Only reason why I noticed it is because SFO has the same thing and I fly around there frequently.
Glad to see some new videos! Thank you for sharing. Always some very useful information and fun to watch. Love the 180!
Glad you like them!
Very nice, thanks for sharing your flights 👍
Thanks mate!
It's great to see a new vid from you and like Garry hope to see you at C56 again. As far as Oshkosh is concerned at least you made it there! I couldn't make it due to my wife coming down with Covid19 the day before I was set to go. No big deal......there's always next year.
Thanks. EAA 260 is a great organization.
Great to see your post. Hope to see you again at C56; flying Young Eagles!
thanks Garry. Yes, looking forward to the next Young Eagles!
I enjoy your channel. I hope someday to make aviation as integral to my life as you have made it in yours. But I have some questions. Perhaps rather than talking about the flight your making, you could make some videos that talks a little more about yourself. 1) What is the nature of your work that you fly between Illinois and Pennsylvania so often? How did that arrangement come about? How often does weather prevent you from flying yourself? Do you fly commercial instead? 2) Why is your channel called "blessed to fly"? I'm a Christian and curious about the spirituality behind that name and how that relates to flying. 3) Do you use your airplane for anything other than getting to and from work? Does your family ever fly with you? 4) Is this your forever airplane or do you have ambitions to get into something else? How complex is maintenance given that comanches haven't been made for about 50 years? 5) What is insurance cost like for you? I'm a fairly new private pilot and airplane owner. I'm itching to get into a faster airplane than my Cherokee 140.
Wow, fantastic questions and a fantastic idea. I had wanted to do something like this a while back but was discouraged and didn’t get it done. Thank you. I’ll get to work on it this fall. Part of being blessed to fly is having good people around me for guidance. count you as one now! thanks.
Keep on keeping on, and have fun.
thanks Glenn
@@BlessedtoFly I feel your pain. I can get video, but my audio sounds like I'm talking with a mouth full of cotton, or the audio is good but my camera dies after 10 minutes and I can't reconnect.
Is that an added electric trim tab? I saw your trim move but not manually??
Yes it is. Good eye! It was installed with the autopilot system because it needs it. I am spoiled in that I use the electric trim when cruising but when I shut off the AP I revert back to using the trim handle. Thanks for your comment.
@@BlessedtoFly awesome. So I just recently purchased a Comanche 180 and have been slowly bringing it up to speed. Can you tell me where you got it? I need that in my life :)
@@travelingchef3242 I think any avionics shop should be able to help you out or point you in the right direction. Mine was installed by a previous owner way back in 1993. It was part of the STEC 60-2 installation.
My first airplane was a 1961 Comanche 180 N6931P and loved it. Later sold and purchased a 1965 Comanche 260 N8547P. Thay were both awesome aircraft to fly. Had to sell due to health reasons (divorce).
I bet that 260 was a nice travelling machine. Thanks for watching and commenting and hope you can stay involved somehow. Maybe your local EAA chapter?
@@BlessedtoFly Unfortunately, my flying days are behind me. I am lucky though, as I have Chino Airport, Corona Airport, and the old March Air Force Base Museums close driving distance.
It’s Sept of 2022 what do you think 1959 is worth now ?
Same with other planes it depends on how it’s equipped,, cared for, upgrades, engine life, paint, time on the air frame,….. The range could be $50k to 100. I survey trade-a-plane every couple months to see what they are listing for.
Hey Scott! I’m somewhat local to you and am looking to purchase a Comanche 180. Any chance I could stop by and see yours in person??
are you in PA or IL?
Good video. I’m south of you in Bloomington. I’m going to be 60 soon and I am not a PPL but hopefully will be in the future.
Thanks for watching. Hope you got something out of it. Never too late. A lot of us didn't get our PPL until mid 40's to 60's. Your local EAA chapter is probably a good place to get active. Usually good people that can help you with your goals and they have good events you can help support (Young Eagles!). We have an event at C56 this weekend. Best Wishes!
@@BlessedtoFly Thank you. I plan to visit both groups and check them out.
Cruise speed? That's why we watch.
about 140 kts at 9 gph. Depends on power setting and altitude.. Just flew Friday at 9000 ft and trued 138 kts at at just under 8 gph.
Seems I didn’t fool you at all ! Every pilot knows that answer! (Pilot and retired Navy Air Traffic Comtrolller/Aircraft line tech)
luckily there is no coin slot or dollar bill taker that I have to feed in flight. It prefers larger denominations or checks between flights.
And, what makes an airplane fly ?
you have to keep feeding money into the airplane and it flys.
I have a 180 too. Love it!!!
Thanks! N8192P just came back from it's first trip to Oshkosh. We hit the dot on landing but the GoPro froze up in the heat so no video on it. Parked next to another 180 from Houston and walked past several others in "Comanche Town". Great time but exhausting.
Based on the highest you’ve flown, what’s your opinion of whether the max approved altitude of FL210 is achievable? Have you heard of a 180 with both auxiliary tanks and tip tanks?
think the POH says 18500 ft for service ceiling. I’ve cruised at 11k many times and at 13k once or twice. Climb rate slows noticeably around 8 - 9k so the winds have to be really worth it. I have not seen one with aux and tip tanks. Only the 250/260s have them as far as I know. But with just mains and tip tanks you’d potentially have 7 to 8 hours endurance.
Thanks. 18,500 is the ceiling at max gross (2550), but the copy of the POH I have (Page 1-6) says 25,500 at 2000lbs. That’s probably a brand new airplane with a test pilot, but it sure seemed impressive to be able to get that high with a normally aspirated 4cyl engine. I’m thinking of a 1450nm flight hence the aux plus tip tanks question.
@@colinbrathwaite334 for high altitude flying I recommend an electronic ignition. Advances the ignition for altitude, saves fuel, and I’ve heard mags can struggle up high unless the are made for it. Probably should consider a turbo if you plan to go over 15k. The turbo twin Comanche would be the ride I would pick.
I have a crazy history with this aircraft. My grandfather was on a US Army tank somewhere in France during WW2 and got strafed by an attack plane killed his whole crew but him. He was traumatized by the event and wanted to become a pilot later on in life buying a Comanche 180 feeling safe in the air. He flew that plane all over the USA for many years until he got too old to fly and forgot to put the landing gear down on landing but luckily the grandpa and plane came out alright. The plane than went to me an my dad with me as copilot and we flew that plane everywhere until we almost ate it flying into a huge flock of ducks hiding behind a cloud. We pulled up last second as ducks were bouncing off the bottom of the plane. Once again people and plane came out ok but I didn't ever fly again after joining the Marine Corps.
That's a crazy story but I believe it. Thanks for sharing it. I too have had close calls with geese, ducks, vultures, and a bald eagle. The former owner had a gear up landing and he made me promise that I would check the gear three times before every landing. And thanks for your service Marine. I was Army, 82nd Airborne for a while. Apparently they didn't beat the desire to fly out of me. Then again, I think flying is still safer that what we used to do!
@@BlessedtoFly Dang a bald eagle? ha thats crazy! Me and my dad got a special flip tab check list in the cockpit of our Comanche and i think it was a good idea. I have no idea where my dad got it from but it was worth every penny!
Getting ready to install the GPS 175 Same unit without the transponder. Just wondering is there a fuel timer built into the unit anywhere? I have a garmin 496 and use the fuel timer on it all the time and will miss it if there isn't one on the 175.
Yes it has a nice fuel planning page in the Utilities tab. Garmin has a free simulator for iPad you can download to get more familiar with it on the ground. Do a search for garmin 175 simulator. I used this and it helped quite a bit as this was my first Garmin gps. Thanks for watching and your comment.
@@BlessedtoFly Great, thanks for the information.
Nicely done. Single pilot ifr landing near minimums. at night is no joke. Pretty close to my home base there. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Where is home base and what do you fly?Hope you didn't get too much snow / ice in the storm this week. We got about a foot.
Beautiful plane, nice flight, great video! Thanks for sharing. I had a Mooney 252 for travel a few years ago and fly a J3 Cub now for pure joy. Beginning to consider another travel plane and the Comanche is really attractive.
Glad you liked it. Mooneys are nice travelers. the Comanche is a bit slower but you gain some more room inside. If you plan to fill the seats the 250/260s are better. The 180 fits my mission for well now. Thanks for your comment and wish you well with your decision.
Thanks for the video. It was very informative. Are you using an autopilot with it as well?
Yes, the plane has an Stec 60-2. It works well but won’t fly holds or sharp intercepts without help. i switch back and forth between heading and nav modes as needed. An auto pilot is huge for me on cross country flights or if I get task saturated in imc. if you skip to the end of that vid I think you’ll see it. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for your comment.
well done!
thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I have a good instructor.
