Creative Techniques for Black and White
We are so familiar with the rule of thirds and the golden ration in our photography, but another little layer to think about when composing an image would be Perspective. After taking the initial photograph, try taking a step back and recomposing the image from a different or unique angle. Lower down, higher up, may be a different focal length, to give the feeling of space or confinement to the viewer. Colour and depth of field can also lend themselves to the subject of Perspective.
Join me as I keep these things in mind as I explore Pen-yr-Orsedd Quarry in North Wales and try and give a slightly different Perspective on this fascinating location.

Use Depth of Field to Improve Your Images.

This useful tool is slightly overlooked when dealing with composition. We are constantly reminded to follow the rule of thirds both vertically and horizontally when composing our images, but i think dealing with the depth of the images is also important to draw the viewer into your image. In this video I briefly touch on this subject and try and use depth of field to add to the story of in my i...

It's wonderful up there, great shots!,it's a fair old slog to the top in one session ,consider parking at Deiniolen if you go again ,it makes life a lot easier ,I really enjoyed this ,thanks
Thanks for the tip, I’m definitely going back there again it was amazing. I parked in the bus terminal halfway up to the left of the site. I will check out your suggestions for my next visit. Glad you like the film 😊😊
@@SimonJerromes thats the best spot -I wrongly assumed you'd parked at Llanberis !
Hi Simon, just an FYI. You may want to look at your image at 2m 59s. It looks like you've edited with a mask and you've missed some areas. The v-shape between the branches is a different shade than either side of the branch, and some of the edges of the left branch are off too.
@@PaulWilkinson Hi Paul yes I am aware… well spotted…. I didn’t notice it when I first edited the image and it wasn’t until I had included it in the film along with another image that had masking issues and I watched it back on a large screen that I noticed it. By then The video had been published. Haha lessons were learnt and a closer inspection of my masking technique has been implemented! It’s a great learning curve!! Thanks for the comment really appreciate it. 👍
Great to see and hear your thought processes - love the gallery at the end too!
Thank you Simon much appreciated… hopefully it made abit of sense!! Haha 👍👍
Love the b-roll edit on this video Simon and the images are just superb.
Cheers Garry that means a lot. It was great fun to shoot… shame I missed the guys in the wire jumping off and parachuting down! I thought they were just inching their way across!!! 👍👍
@@SimonJerromes Parachutes!! That would have been amazing to see. 👍🏻
Well done Simon!
Thanks Paul really appreciate it 👍👍
Thank you Simon for another lovely video. The black and white photos show the location off, brilliantly.
Thanks Dennis it’s an incredible location! 👍👍
Great presentation Simon… What a great place to photograph, you did it justice with some fantastic images… 👍
Thank you so much. It’s an incredible location well worth the trip 👍👍
Brilliant video Simon. Superb images.
Hi Peter thank you so much for your comments. Glad you like the images. Fascinating location well worth the visit if you get chance 👍
@@SimonJerromes I'm way down in West Cornwall but did visit Snowdonia a few years back and went to Dinorwig. mostly seascapes for me down here but plenty of old tin mine workings.

I love the way you produce these videos and how you describe your thought process. Excellent images too.
Thank you so much so glad you liked the film 👍👍
Great video Simon! Some excellent editing techniques too. (Might try to nick a couple of your ideas! Again!)
Haha. Cheers John glad you liked it. Not sure what idea you wanna nick but feel free!!🤣🤣🤣
I really enjoyed the video Simon! Love the intro music it fits perfectly. Very informative and as always beautiful shots! Hope you are doing well!

Brilliant stuff the images are absolutely fantastic. I’m an engineer by Trade and I appreciate everything you are showing these photos 👍🏻. I’m loving your channel keep up the good work 👍🏻
Hi Steven thank you so much for your encouragement, it really does mean a lot. I’m so glad you like the images in this film. I really had some amazing conditions and there is so much to see at this location. Am looking forward to going back later in the year 👍👍
Stunning black and whites. Some really incredible shots in there. Of the boat shots, I think I liked the first one (7:15) the best. Stellar composition and subject. All three are really good, as well as some of the others.
Hi Brian thank you for your comment. Yes I like the first of the boat shots but the curve of the reflection in the second shot I find really appealing which made me rather indecisive about them!!!!. Glad you liked the images in this video thank you 👍👍
Awesome video n pics. I always learn something new from you Simon, thanks
Hi Jeremi thank you so much for your comment. So glad you enjoyed the video. Makes it all worth while if somebody gets something out of it 👍. Apologies for the late response as am away for a few days break with the family. Funnily enough we are back up in Scotland and planning a trip down the Skyfall rd for tomorrow!! No camera on this visit sadly!!
Hello, Simon. You are in an incredibly beautiful environment. It screams take a picture of me. And you do the environment justice with the beautiful photos you take there. Really, you deliver a beautiful piece of photography there. I am jealous of the beautiful environment that we do not have here in the Netherlands. Also, the explanation you give with each composition is perfect. You show that you know what you are doing, friend. You did a heck of a job, my friend. Antoine.
Hi Antoine I’m glad you like this video. It’s such a magic woodland. I popped there again the day before yesterday, as I’m down in the West Country for a few days visiting family. If ever you find yourself over here in the UK feel free to contact me and I’ll gladly show you few good places to take images. 👍👍
Hello, Simon. I can't make a choice. All are strong black-and-white photos for me. What one lacks a bit, you will find in the other. They are really very good. The post-processing is also very strong, everything is well-balanced and not too much. A great piece of photography and post-processing, friend. The second is very good, nice structure and the contrast is perfect. The front is a bit less than the back, but that is because it is painted. It must be said that you had the circumstances on your side, the sky is exceptionally strong in all the photos. The photo of the ship is magnificent, friend. That should be hung on a wall, it is a large format. This is really a gem. It is as I said in the beginning, I can't really make a choice in terms of quality. Sailing has always fascinated me, so that is why I tend to lean towards the photo of the ship. But from a photographic point of view, they are all the same. This is a lesson in delivering high-quality black-and-white photography, Simon. Thanks for this video, mate. Antoine. (from the Netherlands)
Thank you Antoine I really appreciate such a lively comment. I’ve not had chance to get them printed out yet but it will be nice to see them large enough to put on the wall! So glad you enjoyed the film. Hope to share more with you later in the month. 😊👍
Ah summer in Scotland. Net on your head for the midges, gaiters on your legs for the ticks, boiling hot one minute, chucking it down the next... That's why I wait for autumn 😄 Beautiful shots and nice and punchy!
@@DarktableLandscapes haha thank you . Definitely going to make plans to go in Autumn. I went in January this year and the snow, frost and on occasion clear skies made for some amazing shots👍👍

@@DarktableLandscapes you are very lucky. I’m fortunate that my work brings me up quite often and when it does it try and spend at least an extra day there and make sure to pack my camera! Am due to bring the kids up camping later this month too. Can’t wait!

Thank you Michael glad you liked it. Thanks for the comments on the other videos too! Really encouraging thank you 👍👍👍
Great photos do you use long exposure and what’s your go to lens ?
Hi Rohit thank you for your comment. I didnt use any long exposure settings on these images but i always have my camera on a tripod so the exposure settings could be on the slower side and its useful because i did exposure bracket a number of these shots, normally 5 images over a +1/-1 stop of exposure and blended in Lightroom. I only have two 'goto' lenses...24mm GM and a 100-400 GM..although i recently remaber i have a Ziess Battis 16-70 on a vlogging camera i no longer use, but i still forget to take it out and use it!!!
Hi, really enjoyed your black and white photographs. I loved the contrasts and the details that show up so well in this medium. I always feel that black and white photography captures the essence, the soul of the subject. Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome. Thank you for you encouraging words 👍👍
I love the contrast in the black and whites. Beautiful shots!
Hey Hunter great to hear from you! Glad you like the images. Scotland is such an amazing place. 👍👍
@@SimonJerromes yes indeed! I hope to visit someday!
Be sure to make contact when you do come over. Be an honour to show you around 👍👍
Aujourd'hui, la couleur, c'est agréable avec des effets colorés et autre, mais rien ne vaut le noir et blanc pour l'ambiance, c'est bien les nuages, cela meuble le ciel, et accentuent l'effet de la photo.
Thank you Pierre I agree 👍👍👍
Hi Simon. It's great to see an all black and white video. When I take some shots I always try to change the photos to black and white. Sometimes they work better than the colour ones. Also I like all 3 of the boat shots.
Hi Dennis good to hear from you. Yeah I like abit of black and white. I do have another black and film planned over the next few weeks which I hope will pan out well. Glad you like the Boat shots it was such a beautiful ship just had to add a white vignette to add alittle class haha 😜 👍👍
Simon, this was an enjoyable video. The way you talk your way thru the shot, is helpful. "Seeing in black & white" is quite fun. I love shooting B&W, but not every shot works in B&W. A break from color is fun. First time watching, now a subscriber. We'll continue watching "over your shoulder" from Olympic Nat'l Park, Port Angeles, WA., USA!
Thank you so much I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I’m pleased you find my approach helpful as there loads of videos giving advise on composition etc. So happy to have you on board and am looking forward to share more with you. Would love to visit the USA one day, it’s top of my bucket list! 👍👍
Nice one Simon, really enjoyed that, the ship certainly worked in B&W but loved the 3rd image of the Tree and barn framed 👍🏻
Thank you Darren really appreciate that. Glad you liked the video. I was pretty lucky the vessel was moored so close to shore and I very nearly didn’t take the shot. Glad I turned around and found a place to ditch the car! 👍
Hello, Simon. I came to your channel because of your black-and-white work. I think it is really very good and nicely balanced. I almost only make black-and-white work. This may be because I had a darkroom in the film days and made my own work. And I am a printer by profession so I worked with color every day. I have been photographing for almost 35 years now and I keep coming back to black and white. Sometimes I try color but that comes to nothing. And if you photograph in black-and-white you have always good light. It can be different but it is always good to get a good black-and-white picture. You have a beautiful and varied channel that I will definitely visit more, especially for black-and-white work. Kind regards from the Netherlands, Antoine.
Hi Antigone thank you so much for your kind words. I’m so glad you like my work. I would very much like to see the work you e done over the years. Do you specialise in any genre? Landscapes, architecture or portraits??? I would like to visit a darkroom and see how printers carry out their craft. Such an amazing thing to see. I’m glad you like the channel, it can be rather difficult to find topics that are different from the many other great videos out there! It makes it all worth while receiving comments such as yours many thanks Simon 👍👍
I really like the images but looking at them on my iPad, they seem to be very high contrast. Is this a conscious thing done by you or is it my iPad?
Hi thank you for your comment. Yes the images are alittle contrasty one in particular is a little over cooked shall we say for my taste but I was trying something new. There are a few tweaks I’d like to do to the images where the Lightroom masks aren’t quiet doing their thing and it’s not until you put them up on a big tv you actually notice them. I’m enjoying the learning curve and the constructive comments are helping me a great deal. Thank you 👍👍👍
I quite like the contrast. Many subjects when done in black and white can look flat or even muddy. I find this true in landscape especially. Too many similar colors, mainly greens. Bumping up the contrast keeps it interesting. For me it’s a job well done. 👍
Thank you Bill much appreciated. I try and stay clear of the ‘HDR’ look where possible although I did include an image in that style in the video, and prefer the dodge and burn style. I think maybe because it’s been used since the beginning of time! 👍👍
Simon I really enjoyed the video I wish I had a black and white head to put on like yours all of the shots were stunning, as for the shots of the ship I can’t decide maybe the one framed by the trees but the jury is still out. Thanks again for the video.
Hi Malcolm glad you enjoyed the video, I do enjoy abit of black and white photography every now and then! Yes I’m torn between the ship being framed with the trees but I also like the vessel complimenting the tree too! I also like the shape of the Bow and its reflection!!! Frustrating haha 😜
Stunnig!!! Great job Simon.
Thank you Walter much appreciated 👍👍
Brijant black and white work, Simon You did an awesome job, man. Antoine.
Thanks so much Antoine glad you liked it 😊👍
This is good photography but the digital files have been overprocessed a touch. Sometimes less is more.
Hi thanks for your comment. Yes I understand what you mean, there’s one image that’s stands out for me, with the over processed look which was a decision I made in the edit. To be honest I wasn’t sure it was working but I thought I’d stick with! Abit of an experiment. There are a few further adjustments to be made in masking that weren’t apparent on the computer but leap out when you stick them on a big tv!😂 👍👍
@@SimonJerromes Trust me, we have all been guilty of the crime in the past and the present too.😢
Exceptional, love the moodiness
Thanks Alan 👍👍
Some superb shots, there
Thanks Paul 👍👍
Looked like it was a good video but turned it off. The difference in audio levels between the narrative and the music required adjustments each time the change was made.
Thanks for your comment. Duly noted.. it’s all a steep learning curve and will bear that in mind 👍
Really amazing work, Simon. I love your approach to the subject matter.
Thank you for your kind comment. Really encouraging 👍👍😊
Truly stunning shots… you are a master of light and composition.
Thank you. I’m glad you like them 😊
Thanks Simon for your video. Always motivating to see other photographer’s adventures. I shoot mainly B&W and have gone back to film (FP4+).
Hi Robin thanks for your comment. Film is something I haven’t shot on for years. It would be great to see your work. I will search using your name above or do you post under a different name?! Thanks
Curious as to what editing program you use?
Hi Greg thanks for the question. I typically start my edit in Lightroom Classic, where I will apply any masks and global edits, then , depending if the image is going to be black and white or colour I will send either to Photoshop or Nix 6 Silver Efex if it’s black and white. The Nix 6 addon gives a slightly better control over the tones of a black and white image. Once I’ve finished there I will send it over to photoshop for dust spot removal and any other little tweaks that maybe necessary before exporting in PNG for use in the film! Hope that helps 😊😊
@@SimonJerromes great edits
@@SimonJerromes great editing, I especially liked the use of white vignette in the boat scenes.
@@gregscott2330Thanks Greg I thought a white vignette might add a little something to it. There’s a little bit if re-editing to do on some of the masks used particularly on the sky which aren’t apparent until you put them on a massive TV! 😂
Very nice Simon!
Thanks Greg much appreciated 👍👍😊
Such a great narration voice. You have done really well here.
Thanks Coby, very kind of you to say. It’s all been a very enjoyable learning curve trying to pull all the little things together that make up a film. Glad you like it 👍👍😊
The first image for me. I've been meaning to shoot it for a few years but just never been able to stop. The tall ship is still there but not photogenic from the FW side.
Hi thanks for your comment. It was so nice to see the ship so close to shore. Had to drive up and down a few times to find a safe place to stop! Glad I did though! I will look out for it again next time I’m up! 👍👍
Cracking opening to the video and followed up by a belter of an opening mage. Love the boat sequence on Loch Linnhe ... all told 3 crackers from that set and No 1 was my fave. If I had to pick a fave from the video it would be that 1st image and watching the galery at the end confirmed it 14:51... lovely. atvb Alan
Love black and white and the moody start to the video. Some really nice textures and who knew a tin shed could look interesting :)
Haha thanks Simon. That tin shed actually looks pretty good in colour too but didn’t fit the flavour of the video! Glad you liked it 👍👍
Stunning thank you for sharing

some cracking images Simon! Black & White definitely suits those subjects!
Thanks John it was really enjoyable searching for these types of images…. Shame about the midges!! 😜
Hi Simon. Another great video. It's sometimes good to test yourself to see what you can get in a short period of time. And you've come out with some beautiful photos.
Hi Dennis hope you’re keeping well. Yes I agree a little testing here and there helps sharpen the senses alittle!! Glad you liked the images, it was quite fun to put this together 😊👍
Love your images. I’m always on the lookout for the worn and rustic. Unfortunately I live in Florida where everything is new.
Hi Jack thanks for your comment. Glad you like the images. This quarry is amazing with all its old machinery and buildings being left. It looks like the workers got up one day and left and never went back.!! Would love to photograph the Everglades one day! Enjoy your weekend 👍👍
Love set of locations. I am fairly close to Wyming Brook, and the 5th image has a particular resonance. Taking that very subject in April this year , I sat on a boulder, that in reality was not what I thought it was , and went flying backwards off the boulder catapulting the tripod and camera into the air with some fairly expensive consequences and just a small selection of bruises. All back and repaired now. Love your items, they find the mark for me.
Hi Paul thanks for your comment. I hope your spill wasn’t tooo expensive, those rocks are surprisingly slippery. I love whyming Brook in the Autumn. I hope the woodland recovers there soon! Glad you liked this images👍👍👍
