Do you frick with big chungus?
Do you like big chungus?
I do agree that AAA gaming seems a bit stagnant these days. Even though I thought it was an above average game, I think Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from last year was a perfect example of this and was very formulaic.
I definitely agree that AAA gaming is in decline and has been for a long time, but I think overall gaming is better than ever with the AA and indie scenes flourishing. Path of Exile 2 just launched into early access and is already incredible. Definitely one of the latest releases worth checking out. Also we need to make the time to play some more Magic. If you want to work on the basics, they have an app for digital collecting and playing, MTG Arena, that has a pretty inclusive tutorial built in. It'll run you through all the general rules and concepts in a pretty easy to learn way.
Have seen a lot of the buzz around Path of Exile, definitely gonna be giving it a good look. I really enjoyed it, I’ll download the app and see if I can get a little more familiar with it and we can run some more games.
Good review. While I can’t say I love this album, I do appreciate the production and heaviness. Plastic Bath has always stood out to me though. Looking forward to you reviewing Songs for the Enamel Queen if you do so!
Truly an incredible album. Easily one of the all time greats in heavy music. I will say I do disagree if we're getting into genre nitpicking. The older I've got the more I feel like the only truly sludgy things at work here are the vocal style and tempos. The style of riffing, syncopated breakdowns, and overall energy of the songwriting feels distinctly metalcore to me. Sludge riffing is traditionally influenced by bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc. just at a much lower tempo. And if there are breakdowns they are usually a little more varied. A good example is Grief, who occupies a very similar space sonically to Buster but feels VERY different.
What are your thoughts on Big Chungus and the SM57?
Big Chungus pulls off the fungus look pretty well I’d say. As for the SM57, I’d say it’s pretty underrated for podcasting applications. With a good pop filter, it’s every bit as good as the SM7B for a fraction of the price and a bit more lively sound profile. As a musician, it’s definitely earned its legendary status, especially on guitar cabs. It really nails that mid range for those uses.
I would say the most pressing short term concern with AI for me is that artists, writers, animators, musicians, etc are having their works stolen by these giant corporations to feed into and train these AI models, which is then turned around and used to make shitty imitations of these unique creative voices in order to avoid paying the creators for their work. Things like the recent Coca-Cola AI generated commercial and Spotify (allegedly) filling their curated playlists with AI generated music to avoid paying royalties to actual musicians spring to mind. I'm not at all concerned with AI singularity happening anytime soon but the current ethical concerns surrounding it are staggering.
I completely agree with this. The impacts that AI has had, and will probably continue to have, on creative industries is pretty astounding. While the technology is cool, the fact that it is oftentimes used in such a nefarious way makes it hard to rally behind.
what a fucking amazing album, i can't wait to see what other gems you have
Top-tier work - I’ve still yet to experience an album that conjures up such mental imagery as Exuvia. Definitely gonna be doing some more music reviews in the future, stay tuned!
inch resting to see such a pop enthusiast not discuss brat by charli xcx after you’ve been blasting it nonstop
I could never forget my album of the decade.
I haven’t heard all of You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To but Suffocate goes hard. I really liked the Poppy feature.
It's a really good song, especially the reggae breakdown.
You won't get me with your Big Tarot propaganda
A tarot a day keeps the doctor away.
I also enjoyed this one, although not quite as much as you. I really liked the practical effects and the passion put into the production, as well as the novel take on possession. I also liked the allegorical take on the hand, as a stand-in for drugs or other things people feel they need to "fit in". However I didn't really like or connect with any of the characters outside of the main girl, and it did just feel like a typical ouija board possession to me when you boil it down. And The Exorcist it was not. Overall though it was well acted and written, and the horror genre definitely needs more passion projects like this instead of studio slop like the Nun II or Exorcist: Believer. I'd probably go with a 7-7.5/10.
I would recommend the V/H/S movies, really any of them except V/H/S: Viral and V/H/S/ 99 for good found footage horror. I can also vouch for Hell House LLC as KaptainKetchup said.
I also enjoyed this one more than your average found footage flick, but felt that outside of the meta and postmodern elements it fell victim to the same tropes it was poking fun at. It comes across as a much more interesting character study than a horror film. For best found footage, I would name Blair Witch Project (obviously), [REC], Hell House LLC, Noroi: The Curse, and finally The McPherson Tape if you want to go pre-Blair Witch.
I'd love to see a detailed review of the Bad Ben movies.
This may require an entire series lmao
Definitely check out The Thing '82 if you've never seen it. Also the Wicker Man and Halloween if you're looking to fill out your classic horror catalogue.
Love the Thing, I'll be doing a video on that one at some point. I'll have to give the Wicker Man a go too.
Good review! I would recommend watching The Fly. Great body horror movie. It’d be cool to see your thoughts on that one!
I'll definitely be giving this one a go, I've never seen it before.
Cool to see the progress you’ve made with the podcast since the beginning!
It's definitely come a long way man, thanks for the support!
Cool video! Not sure if you’ve seen The Thing, but I feel like you’d really like it.
This is one that came to mind after I recorded this video! I really like the one from the 80s, it's an excellent film.
If you've not yet seen it, I highly recommend Robert (The Lighthouse) Egger's first film, The VVitch. It's in English, but the accents are so thick, I usually watch it with subtitles. An emotionally devastating horror film similar in its ruthlessness to Hereditary, depicting nothing less than the deterioration and destruction of the nuclear family.
@@jsgrantham6553 The VVitch is one that I've seen pop up quite a few times but never actually seen myself. Thank you for the recommendation, I will definitely be giving this one a viewing!
I would definitely say to check out Skinamarink if you like that dread-inducing style of horror. It's truly on the cutting edge of experimental horror filmmaking and if it clicks with you it will be scary in a way that I don't think any other horror movie I've seen does.
Also Prometheus is a good movie but a terrible alien movie. Should definitely be watched in it's own bubble
I subbed today, not because you have the best quality, but because I can see you being a great reviewer in the future! The key is consistency
Wow, I really appreciate your support! I hope to have some more videos in this style coming out soon
Ps5 is such a good console
I agree, I'm really enjoying it so far
U wanna get Returnal fella. It is a great game!
I appreciate the recommendation, I'll definitely be looking into this one
The audio doesn't match image quality , and this makes the video better
Congrats! Sounds like a great purchase. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I remember playing on the original Xbox and GameCube back in the day. Consoles sure have come a long way.
Likewise, I used to play a lot of stuff on the GameCube when I was younger. As for the PS5, you get high-end PC performance with a plug-and-play experience for a fraction of the price. It's pretty dope what they managed to do with it.
Back on that RUclips grind I see
Certainly giving it a go lmao
Glad to have the podcast back! Enjoyed the episode. Yo that Acid show sounds dope. Would love to discuss about it more with you. Lol jk.
I'm glad you liked it! Hit me up for more details, I think you'd be a good fit for lead guitarist.
Yes my work experience is different!!!! I have the old fart perspective!!!
Oh you aren't that old now!!
I really enjoyed this episode! I can relate to making music as a hobby/sort of outlet. At 26, I can tell you that work still sucks but it's still not that bad because you get paid.
I'm glad you enjoyed it man, music is amazing! I am glad to hear that it's still worthwhile in the future lmao
Song is a good one!!!
Thank you very much!
Love the song!
Thank you very much, I'm very glad to hear it!
I would recommend checking out Amnesia: The Dark Descent for a really good horror game to play. It, along with the developer's previous series Penumbra (another great indie horror title), was the real trendsetter for the "helpless survival horror" style that Alien: Isolation followed in. I actually enjoyed them more as games when I disregard my love for the Alien franchise. Also Resident Evil 7 was very good and the next evolution in that style in that you are still very helpless but at the same time have more agency in being able to fight back against some enemies. Any of the RE games are good choices honestly, even going so far as the remakes of the first couple games. Edit: Also Soma is probably Frictional Games masterpiece. It's not nearly as challenging as Amnesia but the atmosphere is untouched in the genre and the story is very thought provoking.
I will definitely be checking out all of these, I really appreciate the recommendations! I've played Resident Evil 7 and really really enjoyed it, but I definitely need to try some of the other ones
Eggs Up Grill is really good! Pancakes are also my go-to for breakfast. They have really good pancakes. Good luck with Gryndl! I look forward to hearing what you guys come up with.
I would argue that the market for vinyl, and cassettes to a lesser extent (although that market is on the rise as well as a cheaper alternative to vinyl), is completely different in the modern day to the market for streaming content. Services like Spotify and Apple Music cater to listeners, whereas record stores have pivoted to cater to collectors and enthusiasts. Things like the continued and growing success of Record Store Day prove to me that while physical music is becoming more underground, it's not going anywhere any time soon. Just this month my order of the new Ghost Bath album and repress got delayed because Adele and Taylor Swift bought out the majority of record pressers for their new albums, so even more mainstream artists have a strong presence in the vinyl market. Hell just look at the VHS trading and second hand community which, while mostly online and reliant on thrift stores, also has had it's own dedicated stores popping up in recent years.
These are very good points to bring up, and I really don't think the physical vinyl store is going to be rendered entirely obsolete due to the collectors and hobbyists that you mentioned. However, I do think that, because the younger generations of people are being brought up with music streaming as the primary medium of consumption, there will be fewer entrants into that niche market because they will care less about physically owning the music when they can pay a cheap flat rate fee per month and listen to all the music they want. I find that, at least in my experience, the people of Generation Z, especially those younger than me, seem to prefer the instant gratification that streaming provides (and we also can't ignore the social side, with technology like AirPods being a "flex" because they're an Apple product) rather than the experience of sitting down and listening to a vinyl on a turntable, which simply cannot be replicated by streaming services. I am very grateful for the resurgence of physical music mediums because it allows people like you and me to have a physical, tangible collection of music that is directly supporting the artist, however, I don't necessarily believe that it will be the savior required to keep the physical industry afloat because it is clear that the focus is shifting in favor of streaming platforms. I read a summary of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) statistics that were released for the year of 2016 and a staggering 70% of total industry revenue, which totals over 20 billion dollars, was generated from streaming and download sales, up from 67% the previous year. Regardless, I think that the physical music store will always serve a purpose in the community to provide for true fanatics of music, but it is sad for me to see the decades of history being written over because people prefer convenience to experience, which is really what music is supposed to be as a form of entertainment that can be enjoyed solo or with others. I don't know, just me .02 cents and some elaboration on some of my thoughts.
looking crisp!
Thank you! I think the quality is definitely a step up from before
Those month long Christmas breaks were dope. I wish I still had those lol. Christmas/New Year's is definitely my favorite time of the year as well. Something about this time just feels happy and comforting.
It is definitely something I won't take for granted! There is a lot of chaos with Christmas time, but it is truly the most wonderful time of the year!
Regular Cheerwine is far and away my favorite soda, with Mtn Dew Zero being my favorite diet soda. I couldn't do it anymore but I still have lots of fun memories of plowing through 2 or 3 twelve-packs with some of my friends on a Friday or Saturday night in my teens. Also Pepsi is definitely better than Coke.
I lowkey forgot about Cheerwine, but I really really like it too, it's been near the top of my list since I was kid, but I don't really drink it very much anymore. Mtn Dew Zero is definitely a solid choice for diet, that Baja Blast flavor is spot on. I don't think I've ever drank an entire 12 pack in one sitting, but if it was diet coke, I could definitely do it lmao. #teampepsi
I'll go there and say I actually liked Sleeping Dogs better than any of the newer GTAs. I also like 4 better than 5 to end out my hot-takes. As far as other open world games you can never go wrong with any of the Fallouts, from 1 until New Vegas (my favorite) at least, either of the Red Dead Redemptions, and The Witcher 3, which sacrifices gameplay for extremely good and engaging writing. Also interesting choice for the Liturgy album. It's definitely a cool concept in terms of the styles but I have actually liked it less the more I listened to it. Their newer album HAQQ also got stellar reviews but I haven't given it a shot yet.
Sleeping Dogs is probably the most underrated open world game that I've played, its an amazing game that go no recognition really. The combat and everything in it perfect, the story was dope and you could feel for the characters, and the map was just like being transported into another world fr. The Witcher 3 is another good choice, it definitely has the best story of them all in my opinion, although bowling with Roman is hard to beat lmao. Have kinda felt the same with the Aesthetica. Its certainly not a bad album, but as I've gotten out of my "black-gaze" phase, Ive gotten to where I don't really enjoy it as much anymore.
Deli style cake with buttercream icing!!! mmmmmmm.....
You really can't go wrong there! I think I definitely got my love for cake and stuff from you lmao
I also love sweet foods myself! Cake, milkshakes, pies, ice cream, frozen yogurt, muffins, brownies, soda, donuts. Pretty much anything sweet lol. Shoutout to the salted caramel brownie at Groucho's. It's even better when they warm it up. I also have to agree with you that Pepsi > Coke.
A fellow sweets connoisseur! Those salted caramel brownies are by far the best I've had from anywhere; I've never tried it warm, in definitely going to be giving that a go. Pepsi is superior for sure.
I also love gta 5, fallout: new vegas, and red dead redemption 2. GTA 4 was cool too. I only beat about half of it though. Open world games are great. Far Cry 3 is another one I really liked.
Its crazy to me how different GTA 4 feels to GTA 5 but I really enjoy them both. Far Cry 3 is one I'm gonna have to try, I've never played it before, although, I really liked Far Cry 2
There is absolutely no reason to put a lunchable anywhere near a microwave.
Its the cardinal sin man, that cheese would get all half melted and the crust would get all soggy and moist and shit, it was not the move ever. I learned my lesson from an early age lmao
Growing up, I'd always add ice to my milk. I drank it so fast, it didn't have time to get watery. Still drink a glass of milk every day, but it has to be COLD. Try black olives! They're da' bomb on pizza, tacos, subs. Ever ate Ramen noodles? Some aren't bad. I love Chinese, too; Jing Jing here in Rock Hill is pretty good. Do you like Mexican cuisine?
I definitely need to give iced milk a try again, I really don't drink it like I used to. Maybe I'll get up the courage to try some black olives on a sandwich or something like that. Ramen noodles are definitely tasty, although, I must admit that I haven't had it all that much. Mexican is definitely up there, I love burritos and tacos and cheese dip. I've never tried Jing Jing, but I'll have to give it a go.
Asian food is top notch and we have quite a few excellent options here in Rock Hill. The hibachi selection is off the charts alone. On the topic of black olives I can eat them straight out the can. They go so well on so many different things.
@@TheKaptainKetchup your story about eating black olives and drinking orange fanta as a snack still haunts me
Thanks for the Patchwork Landscape shoutout! It’s definitely a very nostalgic album for me.
Its truly where it all began, it's a banger
I have a lot of good memories from writing and recording Patchwork too. It has its memorable moments despite us trying to play out of our league and there are callbacks to it even on our album All That Is Left Behind from 2020. It was the basis for all the concepts behind our albums up until our most recent.
Happy to see the Knocked Loose rec. All their albums are exceptionally good for modern metalcore and don't really ride the current trends, but A Tear In The Fabric Of Life is on another level even for them.
Also shout-out to GT with Mrs. H, and Mrs. D. We both got to experience them before that elementary school went out.
I really need to give the rest of their albums a listen, I really like A Tear in The Fabric of Life.
It's crazy that they worked there long enough that we both got to have them. Good times man, good times.
Must watch classic horror film: The Wicker Man (1973). Kudos to you for the correct pronunciation of the word "Samhain".
I will definitely be checking this one out. I did my best with that one lmao
Would also highly recommend the original Wicker Man. Definitely plays on a lot of folk horror elements I don't see represented a lot in modern mainstream movies. Also the Nicholas Cage remake is over the top schlocky and hilarious in its own way, but I wouldn't call it good lol.
We are not alone, Collin. Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, I hope y'all are well!
Really cool to see you throw some love in Sturgill Simpson's direction! His newest album is also a really good, concise listen if you want something more barebones classic country inspired.
Sturgill Simpson has definitely become a favorite of mine here recently, Metamodern Sounds is just too good. I'll definitely have to check out his newest album.
I liked your discussion on horror and your favorite shows/movies! I did not know the lighthouse was your favorite horror movie. Some horror movies I really like are get out, the shining, and 28 days later. I would highly recommend any of those if you haven’t seen them.
Thank you very much man, I will definitely be checking those out! The Lighthouse still resonates with me today, I'm not sure what it is about it lmao
I would also highly recommend The Shining and 28 days later. Some other favorites of mine are The Thing, Alien, amd The Evil Dead. You can't go wrong with well executed horror!
