Meet Jon(Joc) and John. Two like minded guys who love their boats and being on the water. Watch as they get themselves into mischief and attempt to keep their boats afloat.
Joc lives on the water so has an intimate awareness and association with Sydney Harbour.
John is a sponge for knowledge and experience, always willing to take on a project.
Their fleet consists of Silverwake, a Hunter Legend 40.5, his tender, Onion, an inflatable with 15 hp 2 stroke. John has the faithful and timeless Redback, first tinny ever built in Australia out of wartime spam cans and the beautiful Dee Too, his 26ft plywood cabin cruiser. My #projectboat is FULL of water... AGAIN!!!
Great job getting it off the anchor. I'm surprised your windlass pulled it up! Lucky you changed your gypsy.
It was straining and the clutch slipped before retightening. The Maxwell is a mighty windlass. Thanks for the comment
Nice
Great work. I hope you're there again this year!
I nearly cried when I saw the outdrive when it first was pulled out of the water. I'm sure she'll be better maintained from here on out.
It was in a sorry state! But now she back to how she should be with a good clean and fresh antifoul.
Too many shorts! More video content needed 👍👍👍👍
Noted Paul Thanks for the feedback
Do you know how to read?
They must be colouring in books 😂
Lots of reading there
I know the young fella
Good work Jock
How do you abuse a gypsy?
About time
Great hack
I don’t have a deck wash so I slowly drag the anchor just under the water to clean it.
Wow
Genius Also good with vodka
Does the acidity in the lemon juice affect the gelcoat?
No gel coat is very hardy
That is a very shiny boat
I ve been buying starbrite
Jonny Chester is off his nut
The Good, bad and ugly
Some good looking kayaks in there. What are you doing with them?
Nothing to do with me mate I’m just making observations and sharing content
Sad to see them in that state
Yeh mate I’d be very happy with that speed! Hope you used a king life antifoul then you can just have a diver clean it in about 10mths and you may get 3years out of it. When you lift again and because I’m fussy and you talk about maintenance have the hull machine polished and redo the black stripe. I taped , sanded and repainted my mates black stripe on his 44footer and it looks great. Maintenance maintenance and the resale value will stay high!!! You can polish topside yourself and buy some chrome cleaner to clean railings of tea leaves and bring back the shine. Well done your boat screams!! 👍👍
Thanks mate. I cant believe how good she is running. The guys at the marina said the antifoul should definitely last 2 years on the hull. The leg can be hit and miss... the leg may need to be done in 12 months. I would have loved to get a machine polish done but they squeezed me in and i was lucky to get it done when i did. I will definitely get it done next time, but for now, i will be focusing on cleaning up the topsides.
Good video guys, the boat looks awesome!
@user-tl3bt9xc1t Thanks mate, we appreciate the support
Great informative video! Keep up the great work.
Thanks mate, Really appreciate the feedback. Hopefully something there not known before. I learnt that I need to drop a couple of boat bucks on some epirbs and ais. Fair winds and keep commenting .
31 KNOTS! It's a monster!!! Nice work guys. Also a very classy way to respond to the troll from the last video. Very enjoyable as usual. I'm not sure whether you kept any records of fuel consumption pre and post hull clean but would be very interesting methinks.
Compared to my last boat that had a top speed of 7 knots, this really does fly. I know we all get trolls on here, but that comment really pushed my buttons. I didnt keep records of fuel usage before and after, although that would have been a very interesting idea. I have just become resigned to the fact that i will be using a hell of alot more fuel from now on.
Great video Very interesting to see what's under the water regarding moorings
I’m sure once you antifoul and prop speed it will be fine. But remember you will still get growth if the boat isn’t being used and depends on the flow speed of the water when at mooring. Mine lasted 3 years between antifoul with a dive clean every year. Remember while it’s out of the water have your boat properly cut and polished. I’m sure you know all this anyway. Keep up the great work boys 👍👍👍👍
Another tip to clean fresh water tanks use 3 to 4 2litres bottles of vinegar half full water tanks let it swish around for a few hours or a day then run all taps till empty. Fill water to to full and run all taps again till vinegar taste gone.
Thank you captain Christos, appreciate your feedback

⛵ once again very educational life-saving video worth more 🩵💙🛥️🦺🆘🛟🛟🛟
Should of seen that it went forward before putting it 300 metres up
Thanks for letting me come along boys. Excited to see how she goes when she's clean 🔥
Wow good job bro I love it it deserves a like keep up the great work at u will make something, I trust u
Hi John and Joc, great to see you enjoying the good ol' winter prop dive! It's amazing how much difference a few barnacles make to the dynamics of a prop. I look forward to seeing the speed test after the hull is done.
It was quite chilly in there, but we really wanted to do a video to show how much difference a little scraping can make. I look forward to testing it out one the antifoul is done. Thanks for watching
How is your boat going? I havent you post a video for a little while.
@@BALO.Marine Boat is going well thanks. I couldn't get to the boat for a bit but I made up for it this week. I'm making a '12 months of ownership' video as we speak. I hope to have it out later next week.
I will keep an eye out for it. I always enjoy your videos, hopefully i will be on top of the maintenance by spring and can get into Sydney harbour to see Elleray in person if you are around.
@@BALO.Marine For sure. I look forward to it. All the best.
Boat require Maintenance and TLC something by the looks of it YOU Dont have a clue A boat should never get in that shape. You know they do make trailers and most people do use them to take out their boats and clean and service them.. Ever now and Then. LOL what a Joke.
You are completely right about boats requiring maintenance and TLC. I have only owned this boat for a couple of months, and it was neglected for years before i bought it. This is definitely a project boat that is going to take a bit of time to bring back to good condition. As for the trailer part of the comment, for me to take the boat out on a trailer, I would need a much bigger vehicle than i own and an upgraded licence. I would also need somewhere to store it. This is a luxury i do not have as my driveway already has 3 boats in it. The boat lives in the water on a swing mooring, which is why it is being antifouled. The point of the video was to show how quickly a boat that has not been antifouled can get substantial growth and how much that can affect the usability of the boat. It is also a busy time of year to get the boat booked in to get the antifouling done, however, it is booked in and getting done in the next week or so. Thanks for watching!
Rudeness = tiny man part.
🛥️ How do you convert knots into kilometers 🛥️👌🤯 Very impressive the cleaning. Oh my gosh. Look familiar. Have I seen you around the Water somewhere around Balmain 🧿
1 knot = 1.852 km/hr. I probably look familiar because i have 1 of those faces that people mistake for someone else.
Google is your best friend!
A WHOLE BUNCH OF NOTHING
I grew up in an old school boating family where every boat had stuffing box (aka Packing gland) type shaft seals, which are quite trouble free but require daily inspection on running days with adjustment as needed to make sure they drip the just a little. In this modern era, I have been using dripless shaft seals with exactly ZERO trouble. At first I was worried about the fragility and how much water could come in after a failure, but with proper maintenance and monitoring during use they SAFE. Hoses, bellows and o-rings should be replaced when any of the rubber appears even a bit "not new". When installing, the manufacturer specifies a bellows compression amount, which can take a fair bit of force to achieve. A TINY bit under compressed can be OK but there is no reason to over compress; it is best to try to achieve the correct bellows compression since that shaft can move fore/aft under different operating conditions. What happened here was clearly improper maintenance and insufficient monitoring. The scuffs on the shaft tells me the wrong mechanics have been on the boat at some point too, though that wont affect the shaft seal. The entire shaft seal system isn't expensive and in my opinion should be replaced (unless when disassembled it looks a lot better than what I expect). A new one will be trouble free for several years. Also, KINDA shown in the video; those allen screws typically have one behind another as a locking method. Some DIY boaters are frustrated when they pull one screw out of each hole and the ring won't move on the shaft (so they get a hammer). Edit: I wrote this above prior to going to work and now see that near the end of the video clearly shows two set screws going into each hole.
Great comments. The shaft seal is less than 12 months old and was installed by shipwrights, though I believe the ring wasn’t quite ‘square’ or perpendicular to the shaft.. It is in excellent condition, though appeared deteriorated from dried salt water sprayed about by the leak. The marks on the shaft were by the previous owner 7 yrs ago. All grub screws were removed prior to attempting to move the ring, and replaced with new. I am guilty of maintenance lapses and inspection irregularities. This is one of the points of the e video in showing the apps remind you of schedules and tasks due. I am really stoked to have your feedback and appreciate and welcome your comments. Fair winds captain.
@@BALO.Marine Congratulations on a terrific channel with terrific material. Boating and understanding the boat systems and maintenance is in my opinion the most magnificent activity known to man. It is only a matter of time until you are on an awesome trip and some dumb thing goes wrong (it happens to all of us at some point) where you will most likely be able to save the trip with your in depth know-how.
“Problem free.. Requires daily adjustment. “ 🤦♂️ Requiring adjustment is a problem haha
10:25 Your boom- it’s ok with bolts pulling out and cracks in the thread bosses???!?!!!?
@@fastinradfordable the point is that DIY boaters sometimes pull one allen key out and don't realize there is another one down the same hole gripping the shaft. Edited: Added "they" to that sentance.
Keep at it mate ty for sharing.
Thanks dude
Go ahead & buy a sure sinker
It has been in the water for 22 years so far and hasnt sunk so hopefully it won't.
Would never , never buy another Bayliner unless on drugs
That is fair enough. I know alot of people have had bad experiences with bayliners. I am actually very happy with mine so far but i guess time will tell.
Yea, but a. bayliner & enjoy a crappy boat life , I lived on the gulf coast for 20 years
I couldnt buy a boat that was too nice otherwise i would look out of place on it 🤣🤣
I had a 2452 , 2008, piece of shit
Sorry tohearyouhad a bad experience, what were the issues with it?
Great tips for safe anchoring
Thanks mate, ground tackle important if you want to sleep well at anchor. Confidence with anchoring will have you using your boat more

@@BALO.Marine I’m enjoying your boating content 😁⛵️
Hopefully it's fixed now. Ive had prop shaft issues on a previous yacht I ended up fitting a Volvo Rubber shaft seal that worked well
Fixed and operates as intended
@@BALO.Marine great to hear 👍⛵️
Looked like a great trip mate
It was!
Is it a alignment issue ?
I don’t think so , it here is no movement anywhere else, possibly the seal wasn’t straight. In that case yes alignment if the seal. I still haven’t run it at soeed
@@BALO.Marine yeh seems a seal that has dried out! Good luck 🤞
