Genesis 1 is not a physical cosmogony. It is the Earth's story in her romance with the Sun. It does not explicitly concern space and matter, as such. It begins of the full general heaven and the special Earth. Is she not special? Is it he who is the more special than she? No. She is. She is. So, consider the 'light' of v. 3. Is it, not, about the attention he gives to her? Surely, the light is not about him directly. It is, after all, for her. Verse 2 has us looking at her, not beyond her. So, our attention ought still be on her when we arrive at v. 3. That's why we see light dawning. We are looking at her. The Hebrew grammar is that of the present imperfect. What we see is from him. But we do not see him. He gives to her, not her to him. So we see what he gives her. He is not even mentioned yet. For, this is her account, from her point of view. And, she is here pictured as having her own wealth. An abiding abundance of open liquid water. We must never forget this. This is the context of the light. Not otherwise. So that which we perceive of her in v. 2 is already a combination of some of his wealth with a lot of hers. But, that is only a promise of much more. For, she needs not just a minimum of heat. She needs a lot of it. In v. 1-2 she is not frozen. In fact, she is active, and this most obviously by God's spirit in v. 2. So, it is to her own great wealth that is added a lot more of his. That is v. 3. This brings us vs. 4-5. And, the whole thing is foreseen, from v. 1 unto the final verse of Genesis 2: 1. The general, or 'masculine', cosmos and...the special, or 'feminine', Earth (Gen 1:1); 2. The Earth, as its own general subject, and its...special kind of material wealth: its abiding maximal abundance of open liquid water (v. 2); 3. That water, in general, and its...special cycling (the water cycle, vs. 3-10); 4. The water cycle, in general, and its...special beneficiaries: biological life (vs. 11-12); 5. Biological life, in general, and its...special category, animal biology (vs. 20-25); 6. Animals, in general, and its...special category, humans (plant/animal/mineral/physics) (vs. 26-29); 7. The general human and the...special kind of human: woman (Genesis 2:7-25). In fact, this seven-fold recursive pairing is itself 'married' to the fact that there are ONLY FIVE names that Genesis 1 reports that God gives, respectively, to only five things. For, these five things seem to be the Earth's own prime three dynamic, feminine subsystems for handling its own portion of the Sun's energy for sake of life on Earth: (i) of continual regular rotation of the Earth, which moderates the 'directional' radiation for all parts of the Earth (Gen 1:4-5); (ii) the Earth's atmosphere, which further moderates that radiation to the surface (Gen 1:6-8); (iii) the continual thermal exchange of land and sea, and of the air above each, all of which constitutes the thermal moderating system of Earth (apart from it's rotation) (Gen 1: 9-10). Proverbs 25:2, by way of paraphrase, says, 'It is the glory of God to conceal a thing from instant view; But it is the glory of kings to search out a thing to see what value is hidden in that thing.' This proverb leads by example: it is an example of what it is about. It is not a command (obviously not). It is an invitation. It invites each of us to look beyond the mundane surface of things, to that which is valuable beneath. How deep does it go? That is what this proverb is about: be a king. ~ So, Genesis 1 is not your average physical cosmogony. In fact, at least from a life-centric point of view, it is not a crude physical cosmogony at all. For, if it had intended to be so, it so easily could have done even a passably better job of thwarting the reader's own life-centric, normal Earth-affirming perceptions of its first five verses. It does not. God is not playing footsie against pagan worshipers of the Sun. He is not engaging in a powerplay that would bizarrely rearrange an otherwise perfectly good image made of an assembled jigsaw puzzle. If we did not know of, nor ever yet have, the Day Four portion, all of the above is exactly how we would interpret Genesis 1:1-13.
