Can this one lens replace them all!!?? - Canon RF 24-240 vs the rest!!!

After a 3 week USA Road Trip in 2024, lugging around three Canon L lenses, I thought, is there a better way? So I hired the Canon RF 24-240 to see how close it could come to replacing the following: RF 14-35 - f4 RF 24-105 - f4 RF 70-200 - f2.8 So, could the one lens at a fraction of the price replace the three L lenses? Well....yes and no. Check out the video to see my thoughts. #rf24-240 #len...

    Thanks for your analysis and review on this lens. After getting the R5 2-1/2 years ago, I really wanted to have a RF superzoom in my bag for many of the reasons you mentioned. The Canon RF 24-240 on paper seemed to fit that need. Most Nikon shooters rave about the Nikon 24-200 so I was hopeful about Canon. After spending hours researching video and blog reviews on this lens I could not bring myself to purchase the 24-240, mostly due for 4 reported reasons: 1. image issues mostly at wide angle focal lengths 2. reported issues of AF inconsistencies, 3. no weather sealing, and 4. no MF/AF switch on the lens?. Like you, I use L lenses and once there, lower performance is too much a compromise. Canon published patents for new superzoom lens designs over a year ago. I hope they decide to build one of them, and I might Que up to get one. In the meantime, I'll still pack my bag with either my 16-35 mm or 24-105 mm and my 70-200 (all L)

    Adobe has recently discontinued their 20GB Photography plan, so new signups have to purchase at 1TB of cloud storage. Classic has been moved into the other plans along with Lightroom, but this seems like a push to get users away from Classic (and local storage) since they are paying for cloud storage anyway.

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK 6 дней назад

      I have just noticed that. After getting your message, I went on chat with them and one of their support people said they could do a 20GB storage plan for (I think) around £14. I didn't take the chat any further, but I may go back on and try and get more info.

    Dear Richard, If I just copy catalog and photos in Finder from one external hard drive (hdd) to a new external hard drive (ssd) and then in Lightroom I add the new ssd? Is that so complicated? I will be only using a new hard drive with exactly the same content (of course that will change if I start working with the new ssd). I would really appreciate it if you could let me know your insights.

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK 6 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for the question. I would definitely try to do it in LR. I just did what you suggested, and copied a small catalogue and photos from an ext HD to my Desktop. In LR, I opened the Desktop Catalogue I just copied, but all the images it pointed to were still on the old original hard drive, not the new Desktop folder. I think moving things in LR first, maintain the link to the new location (but don't ask me how!!) :)

    Thank you for the video. It seems like a good idea to create smart collections that way. I have made my portfolio website 2 years ago, working without issues with RAW,TIFF and DNG files. I get a little confused with tha Portfolio folder you are talking about: In Lightroom CC, I righr-click on an album (= collection) and select Share to > Adobe Portfolio, which adds the album on top of the default Portfolio Collection's list. But I have an issue with "Reset from Lightroom" which seems to never update the albums in Portfolio. I need to delete and share the albums again...

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK 6 дней назад

      I have just been messing around with this. I think it may be because you are sharing from Lr, and not from LrC? In the side panel in LR, there is a dropdown called All Photos. Within this, there is a section called Connections. This should have Adobe Portfolio in it. If you click on this, there is a list of all the albums, and a RESEND column on the right. If you remove an image from the album, and click on RESEND, on my PORTFOLIO it removes the image. This RESEND withing LR, seems to be instead of RESET FROM LR, with Portfolio. Does this help!!??

Do you know how to do this? Thanks again!

      Hi, sorry for slow reply. Hope the below helps Ref your questions: 1) How can we edit what’s visible on a cell phone? Is that possible? - Do you mean Edit your PORTFOLIO website using a phone? If so, I am sorry, I haven't tried this, and even if you could, I can't imagine it would be very user friendly. 2) In the "Contact" section, I can’t find a way to have people send emails to my business email instead of my personal email (the one I use for my Adobe account). Do you know how to do this? - Yes, when editing your site, have the contact page open. Hover over the form, and under the blue drop down, click on Customise, then click on FORM OPTIONS. You can change the email there.

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK 6 дней назад

      Hi, not sure why you would need two copies, but, I am sure there are reasons. My process moved them as I wanted to go from a 5TB HD to a 20TB HD. I have just, today, tried to copy a small catalogue with photos in Finder, but the catalogue seemed to still point to the original hard drive. I think moving them LR moved the catalogue link too

    • @GugaBRA
      @GugaBRA 2 дня назад

      @@richardchubbUK Thanks for the reply! Well, move is too risky. I wanted to copy and later delete the old files, after assuring that the migration was successful. I have managed to do what I intended and, in my opinion, the best way to do it is to export the catalog and photos from LrC to the destination disk, and then, later, simply use the exported catalog. I have also convinced myself, after trying and measuring the performance, that the best thing to do, at least in my case, was to keep the catalog files on my notebook's internal disk and the pictures on an external one.

    • @GugaBRA
      @GugaBRA 2 дня назад

      @@dezeevrouw4930 In my case, at least, having 4 terabytes of pictures, the best way was to export the catalog and the pictures to an external disk. Later I'moved the catalog files to my internal disk and used this catalog. It worked really well. You can easily check which are the catalog files online. By keeping them in the internal disk I was able to gain speed.

    Nice video. For as far as these type of videos go, you did a very good job, made it look pretty natural. I enjoyed the minimalist background music. The shots of "creator walking through terrain" are a pet peeve of mine, as I always think of the process behind that making it artificial (walking back and forth, setting up tripods, doing another fake walk just for show), but I don't think that bothers the typical viewer at all. Keep it up.

    I've been searching high and low for this information. This method seems to preserve the order of the photos too - whereas if I were to export them and then import manually I lose the order. Thanks Richard 🙂 Have you found a way to keep the capture date on the photos (without having to adjust manually once in Photos)?

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK Месяц назад

      Hi, I haven't really looked into the Capture date in Photos, but just did another as a quick test. I just exported it with All Metadata, and in Photos it seems to save the date. Mine are always renamed, and generally renamed in date/time order, so they are, by default, in the correct order. Not sure if that helps? Thanks for the question though.. 👍

    HI Richard. I am wondering if you have any tips on why it is taking so long for me to do this process you have shown, as it is my preference as well. Here are my items: I am using an Ipad 12.9 pro, a multi use usb-c dongle similar but not identical to yours (maybe this is the issue?), a Lexar professional 64 gb 250 mb/s memory card with the raw files on it, and a Seagate one touch 1TB external hard drive. It takes hours to move over 300 files, and i follow your steps exactly. Any advice would be so appreciated, thank you so much!

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK Месяц назад

      On paper, it should be fine, with my only thoughts being the iPad. Although it is a Pro, I believe that is quite a old one? Perhaps it is not at the same level as the Ext Hard drive you are using, or the memory card? You could perhaps try the same set up using a newer device, maybe a laptop if you have one, and see if the times improve. That may prove it is the iPad? Sorry if I am not much help!!

    Seemed simple enough but when I tried it, Lightroom Classic said "The folder named "Pictures" contains your Lightroom catalog and cannot be moved while Lightroom is running" Kind of hard to use this technique without running Lightroom.

    • @richardchubbUK
      @richardchubbUK 2 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for the comment. It sounds like you are moving both the Catalogue and Photos at the same time? I do not know your folder structure, but in the Pictures folder, is seems you have the Catalogue, and the Photos. Manually Create a Pictures folder on your new hard drive. On your old one, in Lightroom, move the folder that JUST contains the photos (so the folder within the Pictures folder), to the new hard drive. In the old pictures folder, you should be left with only the Lightroom catalogue. Then, close Lightroom, (as mentioned in the video) and then move the LR catalogue to the new Pictures folder on the new hard drive. Double click the catalogue in the new location, and all should be ok....

    It never works, and I spend more time trying to fix issues. There is no way to see what images are not in a collection, so it's totally pointless other than for one-off events or viewing. I have no idea how to find if a file is an original or a linked file. It's 2024, and it's still a dinosaur and a piece of junk. Stats never match and spend more time trying to figure out the issue. Only synch a collection or it will get a mess. And more often than not it will not synch. To clarify for reviewers when the photos were taken around the office, the Lightroom app camera was used, not Apple. This is pointless as no way to see the photo you just took with Lightroom unless manually checking !, Better free apps than this junk. Better syncing your Apple photos to Lightroom. The only benefit is to fill up your cloud to force you to buy more storage as you do not realise the scam Adobe is pulling. It took me 10 minutes to synch a single photo from my iPhone to MacBook Pro and still no sign of it in the cloud lol

Normal keywords are not reliably synced, hierarchical keywords aren't synced at all and persons names aren't synced in any direction. Good point, but I have only just started using keywords properly to get them into Collections. Don't really use LR CC other than to get images to my Adobe portfolio website, and editing between iPad and Desktop so not encountered may issues. Does seem strange though, thanks for the view and the comment.

    Any ideas other than manually "eye balling it" to get the result from the first set from the 2nd set?

      Do you mean trying to correct the second set if all the camera settings are the same, and the Match Total Exposures option doesn't work? If this is what you mean, then I haven't investigated, but off the top of my head I can't think of a way without fiddling around. I guess you could click on the Auto option in the Basic's panel, but this is quite a 'hopeful' way of doing it and relying on LR to do the work...Soz if that doesn't help!

    Thanks, way better explanation than anything else I found. I appreciate the "why it doesn't work" most of all.

    self critique isnt always a good thing, its not your fault that you dont find the images you like, keep shooting anyway ,try shooting some really boring shots anyway, sometimes looking later finds you something you didnt see at the time. all the best

    Not a landscape photographer myself, but I can tell you from looking at a few of those images from a viewers point of view my opinion. I think they are lovely photographs, however my only critisism of a couple of the tree shots, it appears to break the rule of thirds which I know is a personal perspective. From my point of view either a bit more sky or a bit more water with the trees one third up or down would have been more pleasing to the eye. I have done photography for decades now as a hobby and I can never get that perfect shot. I now have simply stopped trying and concentrate on what pleases me and my eye.

      Shooting for you, and what you like I think is important. I think it is easy to get immune to a half decent shot, and as you learn and seek out what is perceived to be the shot, not finding it makes other shots in adequate! Thanks for the comment....

    I hope no one does give you grief. Photography is a personal thing. There are no rules, if it gets you the result you are looking for then it is the right way to take/edit your work

    If a photograph is to be used as legal evidence then any tampering renders it mostly useless. Otherwise, do whatever you want with it.

    Nicely done. Nice images. The tree should have been firewood years ago. Man placed the lamp post and man is allowed to remove the lamp post.
