This Week in History: Fall of Danzig
The annexation of Danzig, a Free City located on the Baltic Sea, was a pivotal event leading to World War II. In September 1939, Nazi Germany, under Adolf Hitler, seized the city, which had been a semi-autonomous, predominantly German-speaking region since the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. This move was part of a broader strategy to consolidate German territory and assert dominance over neighboring regions. The annexation, along with the invasion of Poland, triggered the outbreak of World War II, marking the beginning of widespread conflict across Europe.
