Up the dark lane , past the jail and down behind the fountain , the town I loved so well. Many familiar places there , Arthurs pawn on Long Tower Street, the Wells, old Roseville Street etc, I remember the old Bogside area, used to play snooker in the Star owned by Johnny Boy McMenamin, and a decent man he was too, made a few bob looking after O’Hara’s greyhounds down the old Bogside street , later made some more taking the lead and copper out of the old houses as they were being knocked down for redevelopment, copper was a pound per pound when I was 15, good pocket money back in the late 60’s. We’d take it up to Corry’s scrap yard by way of Nailors Row and get enough for a fish suppers in Gallaghers on Creggan Street and then head for Jimmy Macari’s cafe on William street , great place with a great selection of tunes on the jukebox, many days playing football at the Bull Park when it was still sand and muck using coats for nets , all before the Troubles started which were really inevitable when you consider the unemployment rate for people under 24 in 1968 was around 40% and like they say idle hands throw stones. The rubble from the redevelopment in the Bog was a great resource for barricades and projectiles as any RUC man or B special could tell you , those were happy days in so many ways , never a dull moment growing up in the Bog , best people in the world too , kind and good natured most of the time but like most of us Irish can be fierce when the blood is up 😬🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
