On a side note, consider mulching that soil around the taro plants, so that the soil is not exposed to heat, sunlight, wind and heavy rains. You will achieve a better soil structure and microbial activity, i.e. a healthier soil ecosystem, if the top layer is covered with organic matter. It will also help retain nutrients in the soil and prevent them from leaching out in the heavy rain season. It can be leaf litter, wood chips, grass clippings, anything really. I've recently started to peel apart all my pineapple crowns (we eat a lot of pineapples in this house, besides I also get some from my local pineapple farmer) and spread those loose scales over the soil, but we also often use wood shavings that we get for free from the wood shop. I am only recently learning that many of the very best organic fertilizers are readily available and free once you aquire the knowledge of how to process them. There's many places that just throw this stuff away by the tons. If a person just asked I would bet they'd happily give as much as you wanted.

Use only brown sugar if you use sugar. Molasses is the best. No need to mix daily. Just leave it for 10+ days
