I would be interested to hear your take on the idea of pride in the Thai psyche. I noticed that Thais are generally quite non-confrontational until a point whn their personal pride (or national) is injured and then all hell can break loose in a violent outburst. I saw a guy punch another guy in front of the police for saying something about his GF but after punching him he immediately did a wai to the police!

I learned something new about my mother tongue today.

I recently found your channel have really enjoyed the few videos I have watched so far. I have lived for about 4 years fulltime in Thailand (originally from Australia). The first year or so I was in Phuket and didn't really have a big need to really try and learn the Thai language and writing because it's such a tourist Provence and many Thai's there can speak basic English so I got lazy and not bothered to learn....555. Since moving into my new home in a small village a few kilometers out from Nongkhai City, virtually nobody can speak English so it has really forced me to become more serious to learn Thai. I have so far enjoyed how you go about teaching Thai and look forward to watching many more of your videos in the near future. So happy I found your channel :)

There are some very similar challenges for English speakers learning Hindi: there's t, T, th, Th, d, D, dh and Dh. It's monstrous for English speakers, but learning the tongue placement and how it inflects the pitch of the following vowel really helps. English speakers have similar problems with the "v" in standard Spanish (i.e. "por favor") because it's not really a "v" and not really a "b" but somewhere in between. With "Pai" I think it can help to pitch the vowel up and to make it a more spread sound. I love your analogy of "spy" because whereas "pie" in English is followed by a darker "ah" vowel, in "spy" it's a more spread "æ" kind of vowel. I'm tempted to suggest that British English is a language to be spoken with a miserable expression because it's always grey and rainy there, whereas Thailand is the land of smiles, and naturally the vowels come more to the front of the mouth and into the nose, giving a brighter, clearer and more nasal sound.

Great info but can i retain it ? Unfortunately no .Thanks anyway . I know Thais have a word for "No " but they don't like to use it .I would prefer if they gave a strait answer without going to the German extreme .You might not know but generally Germans are blunt and to the point even if its going to offend you .

Thanks for all your videos, really enjoying and benefitting from it. btw, sometimes you translate Thai words into English, e.g. Kon Thai = Thai people, Thai person. Whereas in English just Thai or the plural Thais should be fine 😉

I had exactly the same thing when I moved to Norway. I started learning the language several years before I moved only to find that when I got there, even if people who understood English could make sense of some of my phrases, many of the people who had less English just didn't understand the way I phrased things, and there's loads of examples of this kind of thing when you learn a new language. In Norwegian for instance you don't say "I made a mistake" you say "I took mistake". If you say "Jeg gjort et feil", plenty of people can get what you mean, but it's a little bit of a puzzle to them because they don't immediately parse the phrase as natural, so it might trip them up for a moment. In Norwegian, people aren't "good at" things, they are "clever with" them; they don't "go to bed" they "lie themselves", and they don't "walk" they "go on the legs". There's all kinds of things you need to learn the naturalised phrasing for, and I wish more courses and resources put more emphasis on this, because you can have all the vocab in the world, but if your phrasing is strange and unidiomatic it creates a real barrier for native speakers, and some are better at doing the mental gymnastics required than others, so you never know if you'll be understood or not. And that's Norwegian which is incredibly similar to English.

I feel so sorry for the doctors and nurses in Australia-they always get yelled at by patients. As a nurse who has worked in the system for 25 years, I have experienced being yelled at as well. However, once I became firm and gave them a time-out, they never did that to me again. The doctors and consultants are very friendly and are treated as equals.

Whether it’s when I visit Thailand or meet a thai person here in my own country, I always do the wai every time I interact with a thai and many times I’m the one doing it first. Showing appreciation and respect for their culture goes a long way. And if you show you can speak some thai too people will get excited and smile and talk a lot more, at least that’s my experience 🙂

Very good explanation for both Yes and No. Only a comment about wrong spelling for ว่ายน้ำ. it is not ไหว้. Some pages you put it right. Some pages were wrong.

The West African Yoruba language is similar to Thai in this regard. When speaking informally in Yoruba, the word "yes" is expressed by intoning the letter "e," as pronounced in the word "ten." This affirmative response is not absolute in Yoruba, because it could mean "yes, but.." which applies a condition to that yes that could make it a "no" if that condition is unmet. When speaking to a person of higher social status, an affirmative yes response is expressed with a phrase whose phonetic pronunciation is "Benny", which translates to mean "it is like that"

It's an interesting topic you are covering. However, I have never met a Thai person who's annoyed by a newbie or tourist using Chai incorrectly. Most I find are gracious and happy that the farrang is at least trying. For this attitude alone, I have decided your channel is not one i wish to learn from.

Correct. Thought I was going to learn something new here but I'm equally pleased that I already know this. My Thai language has excelled since moving here. Everywhere I go, 'khun phud geng mak!'

Chinese (Mandarin, at least) also lacks literal equivalents for yes and no. There are of course various ways to express affirmation and negation, but it depends on the nature of what you are affirming and negating. That’s a difficult aspect of Chinese when first learning it.

Thai language is difficult to learn due to its tones. English is not a tonal language . Lots of times Thai people do not understand my Thai , just like I often do not understand their English.

I agree 100% I can speak in sentences and then everyone understands if my tone is incorrect.. And yes, the lovely Thai people are encouraging. Thank you for helping.

I'm little surprised that you didn't used the word "respect" I though "wai" is also form of a showing respect isn't it?

Don't you think that thanks to Western influence, it's only a matter of time before ใช่ gets that meaning of 'yes', that's suitable for any case?

I think that one minute could be enough for this topic. Even though I listened to it at 1.75 speed, it was still too long.

I think it is quite different between say the poor rural class and maybe an urban middle/upper class. I hear "chai" for yes and "mai" for no very regularly in my rural village but not so often if in an more upper class environment. And also quite often in the rural setting the pleasantries are somewhat dispensed with and someone posing a question may not include the "Chai Mai" but it is implied thus requiring a "chai" answer. Great video, I learnt a few things from this and I first came here 41 years ago but didn't start learning the language until 41 years ago 555.....still learning though, cheers from Pak Nuea.

My biggest problem is to be able to say same letters. We have abc... in Thai there are some letters which are a mix of xyz 😊

Yesterday I ordered a Grab taxi in Bangkok, after a few minutes the driver sent message to me saying"The traffic is really bad, can you wait? if not you can cancel." and I replied"I can wait." and he said"You can cancel. Sorry." then I realized he was asking me to cancel😅
