THE TENSION ENGINE - Unusual Tension/Horror Instrument
This is THE TENSION ENGINE.
Heavily inspired by Mark Korven's Apprehension Engine, the Tension Engine utilizes electronic aspects, bow-able parts, and strike-able metals. This is my solution for scoring suspenseful moments and evoking unsettling emotions. This project took about a week to complete and was done with less than $100.
The reason for this project came from the need to expand my horror/tension sound palette, in preparation for an animated horror short I am scoring - "Burning Rope" by Juan Belardi. The final instrument turned out better than I had expected, so I will use this instrument for scoring future projects that I see fit.
I highly recommend you build one yourself! It was su...

It was a joy to spend time and thoughtfully score this cue, and one of high quality that is hard to come by for a student. It was bitter sweet to finish it; the journey was the main highlight of my days spent working on it. Thank you to Spitfire Audio for the amazing opportunity! 4:05 [score only] #westworldscoringcompetition2020 Enjoy-
Wow and nice effects
💙
Way too much blah blah
I mean it is an informational video so I'd be surprised if there wasn't any blah blah
Amazing!
This is an awesome amazing work of art. I really want to make my own the music is beautiful creepy and Terrifying all at the same time
I love the idea of adding the daxophone I had thought of it, but I didn’t do it yet, but the sound is just unreal beautiful the coiled aluminum was interesting. Plus I just love the way it looks.
Sure………calling this thing « funny box « will b a mistake Good Job. 👻
I can imagine something odd walking across a field towards me
I think you could also call it the dark thought making machine
Sure works for some of the dreams i have

Would be really sweet if you made a sample pack or just turn it into a vst instrument. It would still leave room for expression and arrangement. Many people including me'self would be interested.
Well play it.
Reaminds me of some Steve Roach ambient music.lol
Brilliant... thanks for sharing your process!
Very cool and inspirational. Sounds great too!
I really would of loved to of heard the unadulterated sounds this thing produced with clear visual representations of how it was produced, thats my only contention with this video. other wise, great work!
this is a bit weird, a bit spooky - this is simply great 🙂
Amazing! I think you just inspired my next DIY project...
*_DANK._*
Starts out sounding like a combination of Pink Floyd, and The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe 😮😅👍👏
Not entirely sure how I ended up here: praise be to The Algorithm, for it moves in mysterious ways. This was really satisfying to watch, both sonically and from a actually low budget project problem-solving perspective. I've abandoned so many projects because I've tried to over-engineer things, gave up when things didn't go to plan, or realising an "cheap" build usually ended up requiring a ton of tools or materials that the builder just assumes people would have on hand. This really shows how much you can achieve by keeping things simple and being imaginative with limited resources. Awesome job!
So great too have you here, and I appreciate the kind words!
Very cool build.
Great work! But what did you brush it with? @6:38 since i'm planning on spraying mine with a clear coat
Just a wood stain; couldn't tell you the exact color, but it's just a stock Home Depot wood stain!
This was great! And well done with your project. As a fellow minor tinkerer (with some years on you), I silently chuckled at some of your solutions to various problems you came up against. Whilst many wouldn't work for a commercial product, they were perfectly fine for your personal diy project - a testament to your creativity and problem solving ability. A most refreshing reminder to be circumspect when prioritising areas to strive for perfection.
as both a builder and a musician, this is ABOSLUTELY AMAZING. You put so much effort into this, and for a person with no electronics experience, you did a damn fine job. I love the iphone box idea!
thanks a ton! This build was a lot of fun and gets a lot of use for scoring :)
Oh so that’s u guys making those scary noises in the sky? How loud do they get?
Nicely done!
Nice build. Great explainer. Can I ask what effects you used on the bow at 20:15?
It's hard to dig up the old project, but I was using a lot of Reaktor user FX here; highly recommend!
Fantastic! Note: As of this date there now 28 official Tony Duggan-Smith Apprehension Engines.
Late to the show here, but this is awesome. Thorough detail and explanations on the build. I'm in the process of making my own. The motors are a cool idea!
sweet job
Thanks!
Dude this is impressive! Awesome work!
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen, great job Jake
Dig the subtle electronic elements in B-Half... Good work. 6
