I'm right handed, and started playing the way you've mentioned it, but my friend told me to start playing like this boy is, and it really helped a lot. It gives me more freedom of movement.

Kurt Lawson I've played this way my whole life, its much easier and more comfortable. There is no right way or wrong way, as long as you can drum good you are doing it the right way.
