Welcome to my channel. My name is Brett Schroyer, I own Greenfield Woodworks in Western Pennsylvania. I started my business in 2002 mainly to focus on art and and my love of period correct custom furniture. I've always had a fascination with Carousel horses and all things old. Unfortunately, I became side tracked early on when asked to build a custom kitchen for a friend. For the next ten years, I built custom kitchens and found myself drifting further from my passion. In 2010 I started correcting that situation and transitioned over to art/wood carving and never looked back. Since then, I've found myself being asked to create or restore all kinds of things. From a 1928 Chevy truck, theater sets and props to carving a huge elephant. I have a lot of fun and interesting projects on the schedule that I think you'll enjoy. So sit back and enjoy the show.
Woodworking, Windows, and Weight Loss | Greenfield Woodworks
In this episode, we tackle a crucial project in the paint booth: finishing the large, unfinished window. This essential window can cause issues on bright days, so we're installing a roll-up blind along with dark and transparent shower curtains to control the light. Join me as I guide you through a detailed "how-to" on properly trimming out a window, including building a window stool from scratch, cutting and adding extensions, and mitering the window casing. I'll share tips for perfect corner miters and adding a quick detail to the bottom apron. This video is perfect for beginner woodworkers and new homeowners looking to learn interior window and door trimming techniques.

Have been really enjoying watching your videos. What kind of primer and paint do you use, latex, acrylic, enamel?
Hack #1 : IF you set the video speed to 2x you can build these in half the time.
Que magnífico ver seu trabalho! Espetacular! Parabéns!🌟🌟😄🎉💖. Gratidão com carinho 🌷.
To much loud music
I apologize and agree with you. My earlier videos had too much music and the levels were unfortunately set high. (I guess you have to start somewhere) I have since made that correction with my newer videos so that what little music I have inserted, the levels are very soft. Thank you for your feedback. Brett
Does it matter what wood we use to build a horse?? I haven't seen much basswood in my area, middle TN. I just got a bandsaw to start cutting last week.
I’ve made many of these horses using Poplar. It also carves beautifully and can be painted or stained. I’m currently working on one made entirely from Cherry and plan to stain it a deep mahogany. I also have seen oak used but if this is your first time, I would recommend poplar. Good luck and share your progress. Brett
Hope all in well Brett
Thank you for checking in, everything is good. Just taking a little time off to catch up on my “honey do list” that I’ve been neglecting. Lol.
thanks but not enough verbal instruction on what is going on. too much music and I shouldn't have to guess when you're going to talk again.
Thanks for the feedback. That really helps me understand what works and what doesn’t. I totally agree with the music and have since cut it way back and in some videos cut it out all together. I may revisit this episode in the future and will add more instruction. 👍 Brett
Thank the good Lord, there is an incredible video for people like you and me named; How to watch, decipher and learn from how to videos with annoying yet relaxing music and very little verbal instruction.
Wasn't there an old head carving tutorial? I can't seem to find it.
There was but I was asked to remove it. However, I am currently working on a new head carving video of my own design that I will be making available soon. Brett
I can't find the old head carving tutorial.have you taken it down?
There was but I was asked to remove it. However, I am currently working on a new head carving video of my own design that I will be making available soon. Brett
The best Craftsman I have seen specialising in making Rocking Horse. Can you please tell me the width of wood you made the horse head with? you seem to put one piece wider than the other to make one block, then you added a third one to make the eyes. If you have template plans for sale please let me know.
For a medium and large head, I use 3” thick wood the glue on 3/4” eye and ear pieces. I’m sure you have heard the expression “ it’s easier to take away than add on”. I like to have enough material to carve in and play with details than to not have enough. Hope this helps. Brett
@@Greenfieldwoodworks wonderful! I am very grateful for the information.
Bon …. Les oreilles du cheval sont à l’endroit cette fois ci 😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you! I agree. Thanks for watching. Brett
Monsieur, ne vous vexez pas mais les oreilles du cheval sont à l’envers …..
Not offended at all. That horse is not my design just simply repairing it for a family. Hopefully soon, I want to carve a full size carousel horse of my own and will share it on my channel. 😊 Brett
Que fofura !!!
Thank you!
What is your favorite wood to use, when making them?
I use a lot of Basswood for the horses and if I’m running a bit low, I’ll use poplar. I’m currently carving a horse out of Cherry and it carves beautifully.
Drill and tap the end of the shaft and put a washer and bolt in the shaft to prevent the keyway from walking out of keyway
Great idea! Right now it hasn’t moved but if it does I’ll definitely do that. Thank you !
Que incrível! Parabéns 🎉
Thank you!
I'm glad to hear about your weigh loss success. I would love to do the same. Do you think sometime you could do another in depth video of carving the head of the horse. I seem to never be satisfied with my horses nostrils. Also have you ever thought about packaging a set of dvds showing the complete carving process to sell. You're really a great teacher.
Hi Wayne, I am going to record a head carving series using my own design. So that will be coming soon. Currently I’m down 55lbs. Feeling great! Brett
Stay after it my friend. You are looking good since I last saw you.
Thank you Will! I’m currently down 55lbs. Feeling Great!
Awe, so happy for you. I was a sport nutritionist, I can help too!
Wow! Thank you. I may just take you up on that. I’m more determined than ever to get this weight off.
Hi are your plans available sir ?
There is a link in the description to purchase plans from The Rocking Horse Shop. Great people with fast shipping. Brett
The carving of the head is missing. 😒
Yes it is but If you email me I might be able to help with that. greenfieldwood@gmail.com Brett
@@Greenfieldwoodworks no need. :) But thank you.
This video has been so helpful! I really appreciate you taking the time to put this out👍👍
Fantastic! Glad it was helpful! Brett
Drill a hole to except the set screw on you band saw
Good idea! So far it seems to be holding but if it happens again, I’ll definitely drill it. Brett
What size tip do you have in your spray gun Brett. Wow Brett , JC looks absolutely amazing, you certainly excelled with him.
Thank you Ron. Are you asking about the main paint gun or my airbrush? I know the paint gun is 1.4. I’m not sure about the airbrush but I can check.
Hello my friend, I also make rocking horses and I'm having trouble making the saddle. Can you help me?
Hello fellow Rocking horse maker, could you email me at greenfieldwood@gmail.com? I can possibly help you with ideas for crafting your own saddle. I normally just purchase mine from The Rocking Horse Shop but once in a while I need to make my own. I’m currently in Kentucky visiting family and will be back on Monday. Thank you for watching! Brett
Do you want a fixed saddle or removable one. I make my own removable but add two steel dowels that locate in the horses back and attatched to the saddle tree.
@@ronaldcumpsty5605 Hello, dear friend! It can be fixed or removable. Any help is welcome! Thanks!
@@Greenfieldwoodworks Thank you friend! Your videos have helped horse breeders all over the world, including me.
@@cavalosdebalanco do you have an email address and I will explain my method for you to consider. Might help, might not.
I’m Pam’s sister in law and rode JC many times. You truly captured him and I’m so impressed with how you brought him to life! Thank you!
Awww thank you so much! It was truly an honor to create “JC” for Pam and her family. It was a fun project and it’s wonderful to consider Pam a friend. Cheers, Brett
just to cool.
Thank you my friend!
Beautiful made.😍😍😍👌👍
Thank you! Cheers! I just received word that he made it to his new home in Nevada today. Thank you for watching. Brett
I’m already in tears and I just started watching! This means so much to me. I can’t thank you enough Brett
It was an absolute honor to create this for you. I hope he brings you many years of happiness and enjoyment. Brett
I get to say good morning and goodnight to him every day. He's here in him ❤ now
Mule ears gone
That’s what I was afraid of it looking like. Taking a little bit more off really helped. I just received a text that he made it to Nevada safe and sound and she loves it. Brett
Beautiful with attention to detail great job . At some point an oscillating drum sander with tilt table might make life sanding those rockers easier
Yes! I absolutely agree. I’m also thinking about a wide belt oscillating sander as well. Thanks for watching. Brett
Love watching you work! ❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
I'm over and beyond thrilled with your work
Time capsule cool
Sooo relieved that my trick worked! The time capsule is a fun extra for people to personalize their horse. Thanks for watching. Brett
Ears are beautiful!
Thank you! This area is sort of difficult for me because sometimes they look fine and from other angles they look a bit tall. The consensus is to drop them by 1/2” and I actually think you won’t notice the difference a whole bit. Stay tuned. Brett
Hey, great job! Thanks!
Thank you and thanks for watching! Brett
With the mane in place with the fringe between the ears, they may hot look to long?!
I agree but I talked it over with the client and the consensus is to drop the ears down by 1/2”. Then I think when the mane and bridle are in place, it will look right. Than you for the comment! It helps to get a feel as to what other people like. Brett
Gorgeous head! I personally would take a tad off the ears but just a tad. From my point of view it’s more that there is too much cylindrical part at the bottom of the ears where they tie into the skull and maybe that’s what’s bugging you? I think you nailed the upper part but they seem too tall because of the bottoms if that makes sense. Beautiful creation so far regardless and I’m loving the expression of that left eye, great job 😍
Thank you for the input. The consensus is to take about a half inch off the ears. I do think they stand a bit too tall and I totally understand and agree with you about the base of the ears. I’ll address that as the carving continues. Plus I think that when the mane and bridle are in place it will all come together. This is definitely a fun project. Brett
Beautiful work!
Thank you very much!
That class looks like so much fun! These horses are beautiful, and she did an awesome job. Learning the power tools ,what they can do, and how to be safe with them, maintain and care for them, is what intimidates people sometimes. Great to know you offer a hands on course to help with all that.😊
Thank you! I really do my best to make the class fun and enjoyable. Andrea did a fantastic job and took to carving right away. In fact, she has continued on and has made quite a few on her own. Thank you for watching. Brett
I’m so excited, but I do agree ears look a tad long. Just a tad. This is the most beautiful thing and I’m thrilled.
This has definitely been a fun project. It’s only going to get better!
I think the ears look just fine and once you fit the mane they will look just fine. If it were me then I would leave well enough alone. Sometimes playing too much leaves us a bit sorry. Great video as usual. I wondered though why you do not invest in a zipped up carpenters smock that does not hold sawdust and has elastic cuffs and a velcro neck band. I really like mine. Just saying.
Boy if that’s not the truth. I’m the king of “can’t leave it alone”. Lol. However, talking it over with the client I am going to take just a half inch off. I do believe they stand a bit tall. Email me a link for the smock you use. I’d like to look at it. I may start investing in some button down work shirts as well. Brett
@@Greenfieldwoodworks Hi Brett, sorry for recommending the smock that I have with elastic cuffs and velcro neck band, as I have just searched the internet including the UK and it appears that this one is no longer available. I can't understand it as I love it and lots of other enquiries indicate the same. I am looking forward to your next video so keep them coming.....Ron C
I don't know if the ears will look to long with the mane on or not.
The consensus is lower the ears by about half an inch. I agree with that. It’s hard to see from the photos or video but I do think they are a bit too tall.
@@Greenfieldwoodworks I agree, you don't want them looking like mule ears.
Exactly! That’s what I was afraid of.
Brett is super helpful and responsive I have the first hand experience with that. Great work as always Brett!!
Thank you my friend!
What a fine craftsman you are. Stumbled across your video since I was looking for ideas about building a crate for transporting a Grandfather clock. Thanks for sharing your design and for your time to video and post!
Thank you! I’m glad that this video helped you. Thank you for watching. Brett

You didn’t tell me to check my mail for a horse😂😂😂 down here in Alabama 😉
😂 😆
I’m so excited to get this beautiful piece of art
I’m having a ball building it for you! Thank you. Brett
If I could work as fast as you, it wouldn't have taken me 5 years to finish my horse😂😂😂
Your next horse will go faster now that you made one.
The horses that I have made and one I am presently making have taken at least 200lb. My 6' 4" rugby player nephew had a ride once. I however re enforce my legs with a layer of maple either side of a strip of 3/8" plywood. Really interested on watching yours develope. Regarding your band saw, have you considered drilling and tapping a 10-32, or 8-32 hole in the shaft and making a washer to keep the key in place.
A nephew that’s 6’4” and plays Rugby! Holy Crap! I think I’d run the other way if I saw him coming my way. 😂 😆 this is definitely a fun build. Brett
