How the Mississippi River Destroyed a Town: Fort Kaskaskia Historic Site - French in Illinois
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.Год назад
The town of Kaskaskia was founded in 1703 and it was the southern anchor of Frances colony in Illinois. This fort was built to protect the town. Construction began in 1759 but it was never completed. In April of 1881 the Mississippi River divided its channel and broke into the lower Kaskaskia river right below the fort. Mantle Rock & The Trail of Tears: Amazing Sandstone Arch deep in the Western Kentucky Woods
Thank you.
Note that the Osage left that hilltop village shortly after meeting French traders there, so their reason for leaving was probably illness related. Europeans were more immune to smallpox, for instance, than the Indians were, so the French could have brought the disease with them as some point, devastating the village population. After so many deaths, they probably burned their longhouses and vacated the area. Did the archeology done there note any evidence of significant burning at that time? Another possibility is that a wildfire swept through.
Thank you for that information. I really appreciate it. I didn’t see any information there about them burning their houses. It makes perfect sense though.
I’m from the old lead belt in Missouri just across the river and I imagine the fort saw its fair share of our minerals
My Great Grandmother was Osage from Kansas and married a White man who was my Great Grandfather. When I met her when I was young,I remember her. She was about 5 feet and had hair down to her rear end and was it was mixed with white streaks . She would sit in her chair and talk to us about the days when she was young girl. Never forgot her. We called her Ninny.
Thank you so much for sharing that with us.
Britain still has illegal Bases in California.
Portugal and England and Arabia were the ones who Enslaved many souls.
England thought they could usurp Spain, but California is Spanish territory. Britain is just a caliphate of Turkey at this point. They use Pakistanis Hindu Indian and Muslims. Spain has always evangelized while Britain was usually motivated by resources and money while Spain integrated into the societies they gained.
Great info on the area, learned a lot from your video I’m visiting there for the first time next week and this helped me out a lot!
You’re welcome! Enjoy! It’s a great place!
Hi Julian! Nice to see you back on RUclips. You always post informative and educational videos. Great job! 🇦🇺
Thanks Gary. It’s always great to hear from you!!!!
I enjoyed your video! I just discovered your channel this year and I have binged watched your videos. Denise

So great to see a video from you again! Isn't Alaska beautiful! Really enjoyed watching your voyage of exploration. You also tell the story well.
Thank you. I’m glad to finally be back! Alaska was absolutely amazing and beautiful!
Hey Julian, it's good to have you back - and I'm especially touched that you picked my Birthday to upload your new video (I was starting to think you were never coming back down those stairs😊). Looks like you had a great time but, please, it's the STERN not the " back of the boat"....
Well Happy Birthday! 😊 And as for the back of the boat.... That just shows you what a cruising novice I am! 😮
And it now runs where the old Kaskaskia River once was. The two used to meet in Chester, but now they meet 8 miles before it, due to the Mississippi now running where the old Kaskaskia ran.
Thanks for doing these on the great city of Paducah!
Its awful this building came down
Yes. Very sad. It was a beautiful building!
That's the spirits wanting us to stay away 😂
You may be right!!
The incident at Haun's Mill took the life of the young son of John D Lee. The same John D Lee that was the ringleader at Mountain Meadows Massacre, Utah almost 20 years later. The killing committed there was certainly an act of personal vengeance.
Thank you for the information!
Mason sign
THANK YOU!!! I always wanted to explore those stairs when I was younger.
Is there deeded access to the river?
I don’t believe there is deeded access to the river.

Love it! Putting this on my bucket list.
Love your collection..
thank you!!! i have a beloved eyeball mug that has began to craze so i appreciate this info.
Thank you for you video. Headed there in October!
Julian Gower, FYI as of 8/9/2024 this house is for sale! Thought you might like to know. Excellent price too. (I am not a realtor, or owner of this house, just passing along info.) ☺
I would love to buy that place and renovate! If I only lived closer!!! I hope whoever buys it takes better care of it. I love this place so much!
@nps or @stateofkentucky need to save this place
@@nationalparknrd6565 my biggest fear is that one day I’ll go to visit and it will be a pile of bricks! I’ve even thought about doing a go fund me to try to save it.
❤
I arrived in CG in 1970, age 6. People have hauled off the stones from Hermit's Cave since then, apparently. It looked like the original picture in this video in the early 1970's. The bell tower behind the ladies is the current stone monument. No doubt someone smashed the bell when they wouldn't stop ringing it after Garfield's assassination. 3 days ?
It’s always nice to hear from a local!
@@JulianGower The bell has a crack in it, just like the Liberty Bell. My inference, albeit a 'big leap', is that it actually broke from being rung continuously.
Awesome video!
You can read the Bible and see for yourself how God wants you to behave. Problem is that lots of people deliberately misinterpret it in order to proceed toward things that are to their personal advantage. Jesus said you have to accept the kingdom of the heavens as a child would. How many of these folks are going to do that?
6:20 it’s always a fun tradition to show that to the new volunteers/workers! I remember I screamed when I first saw it 😭
1:21 I work here and fun fact: that black couch is actually made of Horse hair!!!
So, why is it called "Modoc" Rock Shelter?? The Modoc were a northern California tribe.
Iv'e heard the KCMO 1st brick 2-story house was built where a Town Topic is on Broadway,,my fav for breakfast (thankx)
Town topic is great place! I went on a first date there and was very impressed….ended up marrying the guy ❤️
The Fort s/b flying the French Flag of the time. It is absolutely fantastic. Rifle ports in the wall. Were there any Indian attacks, or British attacks on the Fort?
Imagine your French,,A river is flooding the outpost,,what do you do? Well make a raft out of wine barrels,,& sing in the rain
Regardless if the story is true or not, the idea of a beautiful castle designed to be a torture device is quite compelling
Had been to this wonderful museum for this guanyin statue. It’s nice to see it again on RUclips! The museum is top notch and not as crowded as the MET. 👍
It’s a great museum and it’s one of my favorite places in Kansas City!
@@JulianGower Indeed. For Asian art, specifically for Chinese arts, it is among the top 10 museums in the world!🙌
I'm guessing the birds were cliff swallows. It looks like you could have driven up the road, made a U turn and come back and parked on the grass with your passenger window near the signs and historical marker. That was very interesting.
Great channel!😊
Ground swallows by the name you’ll understand their nests are on the ground. When you walk across the ground, they fear for their nests being disturbed. They obviously have some sort of nesting around this big rock or in it or on the ground around it they will swarm around you, but they will not attack.
That "Rock shelter" is a melted structure.
An escaped slave named George Washington was a soldier in the 1st kansas colored infantry. He owned a farm that is now at the bottom of Clinton Lake, Kansas.
Mormons were thrown out of every civilized State in the Union and that's why they ended up in Utah. It's a cult.
I live in Randolph county Illinois and worked for the County for almost 30 years. The Sheriff of Randolph county is responsible for law enforcement on the Island, as the Catholic Church is still there. It is very interesting seeing the church that has been saved after several floods. You need to go to Chester and visit the museum……there is so much to see and learn about our area.
I went last year. Very good video!
The Day After😮
Judging by the litter around & in these sites ( concrete block in the yard - cans, etc. ) it doesn't seem like this town is very interested in their heritage. It wouldn't take much effort.
Well worth the venture.
