2011 Joplin EF5 Tornado: Unedited broadcast beginning 9 minutes before historic disaster
Core portion of unedited broadcast is 4 minutes long beginning from 11:37 and contains multiple screen freezes totaling about a minute. Regarding the full 40 minute unedited recording, more than half is frozen frame, and everything from 20:59 onwards is frozen frame. I believe these broadcast disruptions are periods when KSN was knocked off the air.

It's when you hear her voice break telling people to take cover, you know the situation is severe.
Boring
It was an ef4 not a 5
14:40 are those people DRIVING??
Man, my anxiety hasn't gone over the roof since THIS, believe it or not. This was the scariest sh!t I've ever been through. The winds howling above your home as it gets ripped apart while you hide under mattresses and pillows in your basement.
the tower camera freezing as soon as they have vidual of the tornado is horrifying
To watch it disappear in the rain was terrifying.
This broadcast, analysis, and forecasting was shockingly amateur compared to what I’ve seen in OKC. “Reports of a funnel clioud,” couldn’t see the tornado on radar, cutting away, and then not even knowing they are watching a tornado chew up power lines. It’s low budget but they are in tornado alley.
Last time ever doing disaster response. The most brutal, powerful, destructive, and deadly stuff I have ever seen. I cried for days after seeing and hearing for so many things!! It's absolutely horrific, like a nuclear bomb went off.
Worked for the Red Cross as a volunteer at the time, definitely a life changing experience
Probably the fastest development of an EF5 wedge in history. Went from nothing to a monster in less than 30 seconds.
when the camera pans and you see the tornado and everything just goes dead silent. One of the scariest things I've ever seen
“take cov-“ …
My favorite analog horror film
I just remember looking at the western sky and seeing how black it was. It looked like death.
Caitlyn: has anybody seen uh .......
5:35 - Denial 13:10 - This could be a problem
That moment when the stream freezes at 12:55, and when it comes back on you hear the urgency of the news anchors and staff shouting in the background. That's frightening.
The difference in weather coverage between oklahoma city and this is pretty crazy. If this would've been in okc we would know. There would've been 3 helicopters on it. The technology is pretty awesome.
15:30 anybody else realize yet... that they were not "off the air".
21:01 the “ok” and then it freezes is freaking scary
3:47 This is not the time for ads!
The moment they realize that that big cloud is ACTUALLY a massive tornado 😳
Not much worry about tornadoes in Massachusetts, but give me a 30 inch snow over THAT any day of the week.
"We cannot stress enough, you must stay in side." "I'm just going to step outside to see the size of the hail."
When I hear there is a ef 5 tornado hitting jasper *ITS THE DEAD WALKIND MAN HITTING THE GR I D D Y *
I was only 9 when this happened, but I remember it so vividly. I remember being outside riding scooter with my little sister and my mom calling us inside to watch the Weather Channel. We grew up watching the Weather Channel for fun. I remember seeing the tornado on a camera in the area on TV and then I remember how the hospital that was hit by the tornado looked. I don't have any other memories that are so clear from that age except for the Joplin tornado disaster.
This needs to be perserved for the future.
At the 11:08 mark, they were talking about a Valcano while a Tornado was nearing the town.
i'm about an hour south of joplin, i vividly remember this day. no tornados here, but the worst storm i have seen in my life. i was 9 and had sirens going off, pitch black at around four pm. it was terrifying, but obviously nothing compared to the victims in joplin. we drove past the town a few months later and you could still see the damage. heartbreaking to see.
I was in van buren missouri when it happened i was watching the weather and i see a big tornado on the ground
3:33 random add pops up
The thunder starting around 4:00 is chilling
“Do not try to step outside and look at this storm.” “Kaitlyn I’m actually going to go outside and see this thing.”
Great video 👍👍🌪
Seeke ye out of the booke of the Lord, and reade: no one of these shall faile, none shall want her mate: for my mouth, it hath commaunded, and his spirit, it hath gathered them. Moreouer brethren, I declare vnto you the Gospel which I preached vnto you, which also you haue receiued, and wherein yee stand. By which also yee are saued, if yee keepe in memorie what I preached vnto you, vnlesse yee haue beleeued in vaine. For I deliuered vnto you first of all, that which I also receiued, how that Christ died for our sinnes according to the Scriptures: And that he was buried, and that he rose againe the third day according to the Scriptures. But the word of the Lord endureth for euer: & this is the word which by the Gospel is preached vnto you. true1611bible.com/about/ In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Doe thy selfe no harme, for we are all heere. Then hee called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell downe before Paul and Silas, And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I doe to be saued? And they saide, Beleeue on the Lord Iesus Christ, and thou shalt be saued, and thy house. And they spake vnto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. Being borne againe, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God which liueth and abideth for euer. Psalm 119 Thy word ((God's - Jesus)) is a lampe vnto my feete: and a light vnto my path. ... Revelation 8 And the third Angel sounded, and there fell a great starre from heauen, burning **as it were a lampe**, and it fell vpon the third part of the riuers, and vpon the fountaines of waters: ... Job 41 Out of his mouth ((Satan's)) goe burning lampes, and sparkes of fire leape out. ... Isaiah 14:12-14 12 How art thou fallen from heauen, O Lucifer ((Satan)), sonne of the morning? how art thou cut downe to the ground, which didst weaken the nations?13 For thou hast said in thine heart; I wil ascend into heauen, I wil exalt my throne aboue the starres of God: I wil sit also vpon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the North. 14 I wil ascend aboue the heights of the cloudes, I wil bee like the most High.
Tornado advice: Don’t try and run, go to lowest level or interior room with no windows Jarrel Tornado: omw just stay put
There's something weirdly haunting about the freeze frame of the radar image with the thing in the bottom left corner saying there's a tornado warning for Jasper County.
I was occupied with a family emergency around this time and didn’t hear much about it. Thanks for posting this, much appreciated! This is a small market station, did a very good job covering this storm. IMO
"Whatever you do NOT go outside!!" -immediately goes outside to see the hail
You know things went absolutely horrible when you don't hear a peep from the broadcast, something in the lines of "And we are back"
Sharknado.
Who was Caitlyn (sp?). Can't find much online but she was great
Funnel cloud
ended up being south joplin not NE way i heard it so the forecast was wrong
"Don't go outside." "I'm going to step outside and look at how big the hail is." I know they are more knowledgeable than the public and are being safe and are doing it for the greater good. Just funny to hear. 😂
"The National Weather Service says it might just be a funnel cloud, not an actual tornado on the ground" five minutes later: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
Imagine driving through heavy rain and then right into that thing! 😱💀
3:45 that ad was like “i deserve a little bit of screen time bro”
3:45 😂😂😂
Seeing the live local coverage from that day for the very first time today nearly 13 years after living through this tornado is such a wild experience and has brought up so many emotions. Wow…
