Friction, being aligned straight, yet sometimes they still do come off.

@@WillSmithHitandMiss Yeah, no. The reason the belts don't come off the belt pulley is because the pulley has a crown in the middle, like a bicycle tire. The crown isn't much, but it causes the flat belt to run at different speeds along its width. The flat belt runs slower in the middle of the pulley over the crown and faster at the edges where the diameter is smaller. This pushes the flat belt towards the center of the pulley and keeps it from flying off. Alignment is less important. If it was important, you wouldn't be able to reverse the belt like in this video. The speed gradient along the width of the belt wants to pull it to the center of the pulley. If the belt keeps coming off, there's something wrong with one of the pulleys, or the belt itself.

This is a four stroke gasoline, hit and miss engine made by the Geiser manufacturing company in P.A. U.S.A. This is probably 1915 ish, and would consume, my guess maybe 1 or 2 pints of gas an hour or less. The work load of course would always affect the fuel consumption because its a governered controlled hit and miss engine, using more fuel when underload only. I hope that makes sense to you and greetings from the USA.

Belt crossing changes the direction the device on the other end is turned. Many also like it to stop belts from slapping together, helps keep them nice and tight. Thanks for watching

It is on the side of the hill up near the loading dock/ pulling track side of the property, just off the road that goes down into the bottom for the gas engine area. Same barn with I think the dozers...
