I'm glad that you asked about what he was like outside of the dojo with his family ad students. For those of us who never had the opportunity to meet him, it was a nice glimpse of Shoshin Nagamine, the person.

Hello and Thank you! I learned Kobudo from Oshiro Sensei back in the 90s. He is absolutely amazing! One of the most skilled practitioners I have ever seen and had the fortune to train under. Currently, I am continuing my Yamanni Ryu Kobudo under Kiyoshi Nishime Sensei. Keep well!

Can you clarify your posture regarding step 3? As you bend forward at the waist, are you not possibly taking yourself off balance and inviting a concrete facial? Personally I would rather enter using my footwork and maintain a fighting posture than bend over. I’m sure you have a reason for it, just aiming for discussion 😀

Hello, I will do my best to explain but it's generally best in a "live" exchange 😁... The initial attack starts outside of striking range. Of course, if we are able to disengage we would certainly do so.... Once the enemy has committed to the attack, I close the distance by "bursting in" to help close the distance, essential attacking the attacker. Because the enemy's stick tip travels faster than the shoulder welding it, I need to close the distance as quickly as possible. I initiate the defensive movement with my hands and arms, then body, followed by feet. As I need to close the distance rapidly and my hands are faster, I start reaching out to redirect the attack at the enemy's slower moving arm. My body followed to aid in the reach as well as to bring my head intowards the enemy's body and away from the trajectory of the stick. The weight is in the balls of my feet for the burst in, much like a sprinter in starting blocks. My weight is forward in a controlled "fall" forward and I end up in a good fighting stance able to deliver further Combatives. I'm not off balance to the point of losing any control of my body. Timing is important also. As the enemy's arm is being brought up to swing, that's the moment when I start to move. Once the enemy's stick is in full swing, usually past the shoulder, it's to late but, because of my body position, I can still deflect the stick itself. Which is why we want to keep our arm straight and move in to "ramp" the stick outside our body and away from our head. We find that by moving in feet first, our head is in the trajectory of the stick arc longer and requires more specific timing to achieve the redirection. If our timing is off, we get hit. When not in isolation and training using a virtual format, we test the defence by gradually increasing speed and Power with foam sticks,(then wooden batons for the adult students). Eventually against full speed and full power attacks. At that point, either keeping distance or rapidly closing the distance is so important to the success of the defence. Attacking the attacker by moving inside the enemy's range is so important!! Hope this answers your question 😁
