    My wife and I tried your setup on our kayaks. We found it a bit tippy. Our kayaks must be a bit narrower. We found free handing it worked best for us, especially for birds in flight. We gave it our best, but we like it freehand. Thanks for the tip. Good luck. Thanks

    I find that my 2x teleconverter with my 70-200 GM II is probably the best combination. The 5.6 aperture is pretty good especially in well lit scenes. Any other lens other than the primes I think would not be worth it.

    I appreciate the review. All the images seemed excellent with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters on all three lenses, particularly on the 400mm GM and 200-600mm. The 1.4x teleconverter proved especially effective.

    I’m getting into photography and I’ve been curious about these. My only comment here is that our screens aren’t really able to see any significant difference in clarity here. As an absolute beginner really, I don’t see any difference even though I know the f stops and amount of light would be a huge factor.

      The 1.4x works well on compatible lenses. On the 400 prime, it is barely noticeable.

    Your video was very helpful. I have been debating to buy teleconverter for my Sony zoom telephoto lenses and now I decided not to. To my eyes, cropped view looked sharper even at the same ISO. Who knows what the images will look like once ISO goes up with teleconverters.

    Question about your set-up. I guess the tripod is just to hold THE CAMERA still relative to the kayak, but I imagine the kayak is often not very steady? Please comment. Also, does that set-up raise your center of gravity in a way that makes the kayak tippy? have you ever gone over?

    • @stevecookphotography
      @stevecookphotography 10 месяцев назад

      Yes the tripod is just to hold the camera relative to the kayak. The kayak can be very steady on a lake with no wind. The center of gravity is still low enough as not to have a great effect on balance. Fortunately I have never tipped over. I carry insurance on all my camera gear.

  • @gm1590

    I found my 70-200 GM2 to pair with the 2x teleconverter quite well - the degradation is minimal and the resulting 140-400 f/5.6 is useful. However the IQ suffers greatly with the 2x TC on my 200-600, as you show.

    Have a water reservoir up the street from my house probably about 3 miles. And I get beautiful egrets and great blue herons. They can be a little cumbersome because I have to shoot from the side of the road to get the birds and usually I have to use my rf800 mm. But I've gotten some rather good pictures these last few years and it's right up the street so I can go all the time. Recently I was cracking up and walking away in this beautiful eagle fluoride pass my head and normally I would grab my camera but I had missed the shot. Lo and behold he went down and made a u-turn and came directly back in my direction. So I grabbed my Canon R5 with my 800 at-ats to it and started bursting away 20 frames a second. I got some prices pictures and absolutely and thrilled that we now have an evil in our neighborhood. Funny thing is I live 20 miles outside of Charlotte North Carolina and usually don't get Eagles here. I do live in the countryside of Mooresville North Carolina so we have lots of deers, turkeys, coyotes, foxes, and all types of birds. Just today I got a beautiful owl and a hawk in the same Tree in my yard! That's not everyday though and it is rare but it does happen. Thank you for your upload I really appreciate the content

    You guys (In America) are extremely lucky with birds. You can get to them in open so close. This year I was in Henderson Swamp LA for couple of hours and got plenty of heron shots. Blue , Great(white) and snowy. In here where I live (central Europe) those birds are extremely shy and vigilant. I cannot approach them in open. I have to wait hours in silence in the hide for them to come to me and even then, even slightest movement or sound may scare them.

    Love your videos I have a question if you don't mind how do you determine the correct f-stop, for some of your shots you choose f4 how do you determine that stop Thanks

    • @stevecookphotography
      @stevecookphotography 2 года назад

      Interesting you brought that up, my next video will be about exactly that 😊. If I am a good distance (over 50 feet or so) on a small to medium bird I almost always shoot wide open. The larger and thicker the head such as a bear or deer, if I have enough light I will stop down to 5.6 or 6.3 to get more of the head and focus. In my opinion if you have the eye in focus and you have nice bokeh in the background it is a more attractive than stopping down to F8 and having background objects more in focus because they are distracting.
