Forgetting to Differentiate the Inner Function • Mistake: Only differentiating the outer function without accounting for the derivative of the inner function. • Example: For f(x) = (3x^2 + 5)^4 , calculating f’(x) = 4(3x^2 + 5)^3 and stopping there. • Correction: Multiply by the derivative of the inner function: f’(x) = 4(3x^2 + 5)^3 . 6x = 24x(3x^2 + 5)^3 . 2. Misidentifying the Outer and Inner Functions • Mistake: Confusing which function is “outer” and which is “inner.” • Example: For f(x) = \sin(x^2) , treating \sin(x^2) as if x^2 is the outer function. • Correction: Recognize the outer function as \sin(u) and the inner function as u = x^2 . Then apply the chain rule: f{\prime}(x) = \cos(x^2) . 2x . I hope this helps.
