    Hugely enjoyable, Tim and Martin. Loved the callbacks and self-referencing and, especially, the economy. Lincoln Green, like tights themselves, is a bit of a stretch.

    • @timshaw9627
      @timshaw9627 2 дня назад

      Yeah. Over economical there. Another clause would be playing fair. Poor old Martin gets the raw material unfortunately. Bit of a stretch is great joke though!

    (SPOILER ALERT) I can see why newspapers have editors! I apologise for the shiny surfaces that caught my eye without providing enough fodder for the solver. Snapper possibly/dish in yesterday's newspaper is my attempted but failed double definition of whitefish with a surface intended to suggest paparazzi. I thought everyone on earth would pick up on the entirely superfluous reference in 20a to the brilliant Alan Rickman in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, but there is clearly one lout on the planet who doesn't appreciate his genius! Lincoln Green, the green colour (lush cast) of hosiery worn by the Merry Men (Men In Tights) clearly needed an added explanatory definition but I was seduced by the brevity of the joke and I can see that it isn't playing fair with the solver. I had "green cast" at first but then "lush cast" was just a great joke but I should have added another clause to level the playing field. Suggestions welcome for how to clean that one up. Great solve Martin. Unfortunately you're my editor so you get the raw material and have to clean it up in real time on camera. The least I can do is buy you a coffee.

    • @The_Cryptic_Mystic
      @The_Cryptic_Mystic День назад

      Thank you Tim! Please don't apologise. I think in the video I've recommended of Dean Mayer livestreaming a Cryptic Crossword construction he says something about the the double definitions should be different things , ie. they shouldn't both refer to fish Thanks for the explanations - and your brilliant crossword. And also for the coffee contribution :) Much appreciated :)

    Another fine puzzle from the Telegraph. I figured that NO- HOPER was the correct answer for 13a quite early on. However, it took a long time for me to realise that “mobile” was being used as an anagram indicator! Thanks for the video.

    Thanks, I do look forward to the guardian easy. Do you have any insight in to cognitive methods for solving anagrams? I notice the guardian arranges the letters in a circle. That definitely helps, but curious if there are other methods. Also, is it cheating?

    • @The_Cryptic_Mystic
      @The_Cryptic_Mystic 6 дней назад

      Sorry for the late reply, I was travelling back from holiday and have spent the last 2 days 1) getting my house in order, 2) getting a new puppy! so haven't had loads of time. To answer your question, I don't see it as cheating - recognising that the clue is an anagram is more than half the battle I think. I tend to look for common suffixes or prefixes - eg -tion, -ing, pre-, re-, etc Also, I find writing the letters completely randomly scattered on the page rather than in a circle works for me - hope this helps :)
