I remember these aircraft and many more the RAF had when I served from 1984 to 1994 and the many bases that were operational.
Im a Irishman watching this on the other side of the Irish Sea and all I can think is how far the UK has fallen ...... sad.
Phantoms, Buccs, Gannet AEW.... Could have done with them in 82....
Brilliant footage, Britain's had some incredible aircraft over the decades, great to see them in action here. Especially the Gannet 👍
なんで海上自衛隊はこのような動画が作れないのかな?50年以上遅れている。残念です
1:49 Interesting flap design on the Gannet.
The deck space was 1/2 of a Forrestal.
Fantastic footage you've captured. Definitely one for the history archive, well done👍
イギリス海軍、70年代はアメリカと比べても遜色ない空母運用してたのに現在はVSTOL空母2隻のみとはさみしいね
The Buccaneer pilot was near seen flying Boeing 737’s for Britannia.
Yep, us boomers lived through the best times.
Love this footage. Im so used to seeing us carrier film its great to see buccaneers and the difference in the way UK navy flight deck crew operate. Less showy
At least in those days they remembered to remove the engine covers before launch !
I made a plastic model of the HMS Ark Royal from a kit when I was a kid living on the Zambia Air Force base in Lusaka, back in 1972. There were tiny plastic aircraft to line up on the flight deck.
The happiest guy on the ship was that Buccs back seater. 6 tries!
Very nice images !!!
I was terribly impressed when a pilot friend if mine told me he had flown Hawker Sea Hawks off carriers in the 1950s. I asked more about the balls of steel required to land a 50s jet on a heaving deck at night. He would have none of it, claiming it was a piece of cake to just watch the mirrors and lights. Extraordinary modesty.
先代アーク・ロイヤルはいずも、かがと大差ない飛行甲板のサイズでファントムやバッカニアを運用してたんだから手狭感がすごい。
Awesome mate... I seen Buccaneer planes on HMS Eagle when it visited NZ in the early 70's 👍🇳🇿
I'll tell you this as an AT who worked O-level on American carriers: that Bucc jock was given 200% more chances to trap than any other cooperative exercise pilot I ever saw. You bolter twice, and you're diverted...period. It's not like these guys come into this with no training; they've trained for weeks or months on "dry decks" ashore before they ever approach a carrier trap. There's not a single US Naval Aviator who boltered FOUR TIMES who's ever qual'd for carrier landings.
fanatstic footage & vid,i always walk round the TSR2 when i go to IWM Duxford its a gem & seeing the footage & photos of every jig, tool, fuselauges, drawings everything to do with the programme was destroyed it was criminal
Amazing.
Rip-off of the BBC TV Series "Sailor" from 1976 - you can find the whole series on youtube. (It won't let me link the playlist.)
What an absolutely splendid aircraft the Bucc was.
The Fleet Air Arm in the 70s was a sight to behold.
This movie has been around a while but stands the test of time. Always fun to watch. I have to giggle at the accents of the RN Officers..quite typical at the time. Ark Royal was indeed a great ship, but getting very long in the tooth (sorry Mr. Dentist) with all kinds of technical problems cropping up all the time. In 1974 and 1975 there were quite often fires and other breakdowns several times a week which affected daily operations. It should have been replaced with a Nuclear Carrier in the late 60's but like all expensive endeavors this got no further than the drawing board and led to the cheaper "Through-deck" cruiser options of Ark Royal and Illustrious. Although the Ark did not make it for the Falklands, many of the crew and pilots did indeed serve there with distinction most especially the ex-892 Phantom pilots "Sharkey" Ward (RIP) and my old D.O. Lt. Cdr. Neil Thomas (later promoted to Commodore). Several excellent and well respected pilots were also lost in mishaps with the Sea Harrier in that conflict. Like all others who served on her, for me it was certainly the most exciting and intense part of my long career with Aircraft.
I always imagine that the Daleks from the two 1960"s films, if they turned up in an aircraft, would turn up in this, Dalek friendly of course😅
1:57 Not suprised the equipment is unserviceable, look at the state of those console screws 😅
When you could drive up to the airport front door!!
At That Time I was ARK's "Toothie" {Dental Surgeon). What an experience! She was a Happy Ship under Captain 'Wilf' Graham. Those pilots were well respected by all on board.
I was in air tragic lousymouth an mda which still had Gannets and shacks , and so got plenty foreign visitors. Was a privilege to see that era . 😊 Nowadays the world is well different.
Ah! The Fairey Gannet! Not the most......elegant aircraft is it? But a successful and capable one. In service from 1953 to 1978, and only ended then because they scrapped the ships that could operate them. I wouldn't call the Buccaneer pretty either, but again, a capable and flexible weapon with a long service life.
The good old days. Beautifully English.
First a Phantom landing , then a Buccaneer, then as a visual juxtaposition , we have the Fairey Gannet..."ugly, yet beautiful beast" :)
What a time to be alive ! ;)
No kidding!
As soon as i spotted those oval shaped air inrakes , i thought "Buccaneer" ")
There is no time for picking your nose here! You need to know your job or people die!
If the U.K kept the Ark Royal until the early 80s Argentina may have had second thoughts about invading the Falklands. Especially equipped with the F4s that was intimidating carrier with all of that fire power.
Those were the days I visited HMS DRYAD for a RoyalNavy week while at school, and we saw HMS Ark Royal not long before she went for razor blades.Sad but a very proud moment for me to see this great ship.I love those old photos when her deck was full of sea Vixens,or Buccaneers ,or even sea Vemons, and not forgetting F4s.wonderful.
My brother was on the USS Shangri-La during fleet training with allied navies, mainly the Royal Navy, in the 1970s. One of the highlights of the exercise, was when his flight crew went over to a British small bow and dined with the officers, and were served complete cooked meals, followed by a choice of beer or rum. The Brits have since discontinued serving alcohol aboard ship, but for him it was a real treat.
Naval ratings had a daily ration of 3 cans of beer. The Senior Ratings and Officers had a Bar in the Mess.
A outrora poderosa Royal Navy!! Hoje não é nem a sombra do que era , infelizmente!!!😢
Shame The title couldn't get the name right, It is HMS ARK ROYAL a K not a C.
Sorry ,my mistake. Thanks for the advise.
Yup, got the Airfix 1/48 Buccaneer, Gannet and Sea King in my stash. How did the Royal Navy find me?
Porque no estuvo en Malvinas en 1982?
It was scrapped in 1979/80. It was already very old.
Awesome video! .. I still have memories of HMS Eagle when it visited NZ in the early 70's and I Buccaneer, Sea Vixens. I have an Airfix 1/72 Buccaneer and recently Airfix 1/48 Sea King. I watched the series Sailor in the 70's about HMS Ark Royal. Rod Stewart he sang the theme and he married Kiwi model Rachel Hunter.. cheers mate from NZ🇳🇿
Very cool!
I worked this deck as a Yellow Jacket, 1970. Alongside a lot of those in this film. It was without a doubt the most exiting thing that I have ever done either before or after.
I was on the Mighty Arks deck for two drafts ... loved every second of it
Glad you enjoyed it!
@ Chocks or Grubber.
Greetings from an 892 Grubber.
@@joluqamalta2815 Would just like to say a big thank you for all your great restored movies here on the tube. They bring back many memories.🤪
Awesome footage !
Thanks for visiting!
This when we had a real navy and fleet air arm-
I agree with you sir!
5:56 what would have caused the Buccaneer to briefly tip back on its main gear like that?…pitch and roll of the ship? It’s dropped the arrestor cable so it’s not that retracting?
The wire pulls the sircraft back a few feet that's how it comes off of the hook ... the Bucc tipped due to putting brakes on to stop the rearwards travel
Thanks for visiting!
Thanks for your comment sir!
@@theoccupier1652 makes sense thanks👍🏼
Applying the brakes would have done that because there was a headwind and the aircraft almost empty of fuel when releasing the cable.
Spent 21/2 years on 205 Sqn in Changi 1965-1967. Several detachment to Gan for a couple of weeks each time on SAR duties. There was a war going on then so spent many night hours flying up and down the Malacca Straits. A great tour
Thanks for watching!
