Such an easy ride into great novellas and the speaker squeezes the essence of each novella. Can he do the same with great novels..not the biggies but less well known. Please understand that readers with low attention spans and addicted to video games may never read moby dick. You could give us the essence of the book and and let us surface or skim before the coffin nails close in as.

There has definitely been a democratizing effect through the spread of paperbacks to the broader public; on the other hand, it has also broadened the publishing quality of literature (pulp fiction and the like). While I have no grudge against anyone wanting to publish, I suspect that the goals of the publishing industry only exacerbated this issue, as now there were more avenues for profit and they might afford to shift their editorial choices from "value to some" to "saleable to many." This has only been made worse by the digital advent of vanity publication and ebooks, where the profit margins rise again with dubious quality of the reading. That said, from the reader side, your last question is interesting. I think that the convenience of multiple forms/formats for reading will likely continue. Paper books, audio books, e-books, podcasts, live stagings, dramatic readings, video productions, VR creations, etc. For instance, I use an app on my phone called Serial for when I'm caught for a few minutes somewhere: it breaks classic readings down into shorter segments suitable for a mobile screen. Otherwise, I also "read" from all of the other formats available (still waiting for VR). I don't expect one to override another, necessarily (who expected vinyl to return for music?), except in terms of what resources we have: I can travel with ebooks, listen to audio while I work in the yard, and preserve texts against the apocalypse with paper. Once conventional tree paper becomes too expensive, we'll find a substitute. Many content producers (writers) now compose in preparation for all of these forms, adding social media clips and such to the mix. In the end, it is narrative that will continue, regardless of the technology we choose at the cultural moment. That's what we're made of. Thanks for this video!
