Tuesday Bach 7:1:25 St Mary's Ewell with Jonathan Holmes
Tuesday Bach at St Mary’s Ewell January 7th, 2025, from 1.05pm - 1.35pm
Jonathan Holmes
Programme
Two Chorale Preludes on ‘In Dulci Jubilo’ BWV 729 and BWV 608
‘Das alte Jahr vergangen ist’ BWV 614

Trio Sonata in D minor BWV 527
1. Andante 2. Adagio e dolce 3. Vivace
Prelude in G major BWV 568
Notes
BWV 729 Bach’s extrovert setting of "In dulci jubilo,", with its dense chords, bold harmonies, and jubilant improvisatory interludes, contrasts greatly with his more intimate BWV 608 Orgelbüchlein setting. Jonathan Allsopp Recital at St Mary's Ewell part 1

The Town Hall Tradition Jonathan Allsopp presents a programme suitable for a grand Victorian Town Hall Organ of which ‘Father’ Willis built many; his most famous examples being St George’s Hall Liverpool, The Alexandra Palace and The Royal Albert Hall. His church organs were very similar, and our Willis is a fine example of the type, being relatively unaltered tonally. Hollins Concert Overture ...

Florence Price 'Peter go ring dem bells' variations
This is the only work of Lanquetuit that was ever published. Virtually all of his other works were destroyed in a house fire in 1940.
There are many great examples of performances by thi spiece on youtube. One which I liked, and illustrates my points, is ruclips.net/video/-gbXfH9T6Gk/видео.html For example, take the first bar.... yes, listening, I like this a lot. See how he phrases the semis.
my favorite composer, very romantic. went to an organ concert (many) years ago, walked up to the organist, very nice woman, funny too, i had asked her if she played Cesar, she said not many do because of it being on the difficult side,, (i am do done with bach have been,,, but, i have no problem singing along with Cesar, lol. (i was a singer , bass, and i can't read music at all. being dyslexic might have something to do with it, lol, but i was in the 'elite' group of singers,, got A's too, so there, lol great video!
Amazing! I had no idea that organ had so many colours, though I have fond memories of it as I practised on it around 1980.
Yes it's quite a beast and still plays very well with all those reeds!

thanks for the timings
Bravo. I have never properly committed to learning it but I know it's a tricky piece, especially with pedal notes on ',off-beats'.
Thanks, it's worth the effort!
beautiful middle section solo stop awesome
Thanks, there are quite a lot of colours on the Viscount if you explore the various' menus'.
Great! Thanks
You're welcome!
Magnífico.
It's an awesome piece.

Lindas essas variações sobre o Tema 😃👏👏👏👏🎹🎼🎶🎵🎶🎶
Can anyone tell me who publishes this score, or how I might be able to buy a copy of the score?
This was played on the organ today for my father's funeral in Northampton. A Royal Navy nurse then an ambulanceman. A beautiful piece leading into the eulogy started with the words "And now for the Shipping Forecast issued today at 0015.."
Gratulation, great organ Player. Bravo. I missing the Trumpet Player 😉( I play Solo Horn in a swiss Brassband. Greetings from Switzerland !
Thank you very much!
Impressionante! Bach, o maior de todos os compositores! Interpretação perfeita; órgão esplêndido; tudo maravilha. Estou encantado com a competência do organista. Obrigado por esta gravação!
Thanks very much

A work of love, Jonathan. Consecrated to the quintessential "voice of the [eternal] infant." And yet: that atypical, for an artist of Jehan's high+ potential, volley of bullets from his own weapon, which at 'the ambush' killed xx# of German soldiers during the short Drôle de Guerre (1940). ...more than can be said for the rest of France's war-weary military. That day A-L-A-I-N's youthful innocence took a crashing fall; only to open onto vistas--it's my belief--of Light, Truth, Freedom of higher dimensions that a soul like his had surely envisioned often enough. And that clairvoyance comes out in each of his compositions. It's a cliché that we let our minds wander, and wonder what could have been with just 5 more years of the rigorous training to which French organist-improviser-composer musicians were (and still are!) subjected to in France. J's middle and late-period compositions would have given us Music of the order of Duruflé's memorializing P&F. But uniquely J's own style, rooted in the youthful period cut short "in an instant, suddenly" to quote the KJV of Isaiah. All one can really say is C'est la vie." But one can also be uniquely, powerfully enriched by the very high levels of civilization brought together right here in your collage. Not least: including a Father Willis in full glory. Midsized, but all one could ever want when playing a Sunday service. To summarize, thank you! Mark (Arizona usa)
Interesting
Thank you very much Mr. Jotathan Holmes, beautiful interpretation of Bach especially the prelude and fugue in Eb major. Congratulations!!
Many thanks!
Oh for gods sake slow it down. This is not a rush for the finish line. This is a very interesting piece of music. If the organist thinks he know what's what; he doesn't. Sorry. Just that the bastard should be take out and..... Shoot the organist a.s.a.p. Or give him a shot of bourbon. Make it a double. then. He's not listening to work. He's merely flying his fingers around the keyboard. And even then, the glory comes shining through. Shit. !
Fantasic playing!
Many thanks!
Very fine played, but the recording sounds very high pitched...
Perhaps it's the 4 rank cymbal mixture on the choir?
@@jonathanholmes3223 Yes, I think so...
Great! Amazing playing and Sound!
Thanks for listening
hello how to set up alternative voices because I have to change the voice of trombone 16 "to bassoon 16" in the pedal because I am looking for alternative voices and I can't find them, I will be forever grateful and I have a viscount chorum 90 with the system 1.1 10
Go to the voices menu and find alternative voices. Press the tab down on the organ until it flashes then scroll through the voices to find bassoon 16 press enter. and it should remember the voice!
@@jonathanholmes3223 where is it voices menu?
I've put a short video on my channel hope it's of some use!
@@jonathanholmes3223 unfortunately I have artem technology and not physis can you find alternative voices for this technology somewhere?
Fabulous technique and interpretation. Short pedal board a bit irritating when watching the score. Next time let's watch your feet!
Special thanks.
Most welcome
Carl nielsen:Commotio Op.58 1.Adagio - Andantino tranquillo 00:00 2.Andante sostenuto 12:06 Father Willis-orgona
A very enjoyable piece, of which I am unfamiliar. The Viscount sounds really well!
Many thanks!
Spektakulär, mega gut gespielt 👍
Thanks
Thanks for upload
You're very welcome!
What a pleasure to find your channel! I remember I worked in this organ with Edward Dove in 2018, doing the under action machine. I'm from Brazil and I was having some organ-building experience that time in the UK. Greetings from São Paulo
Hi Eduardo lovely to hear from you. Underaction machines going strong. Are you doing organ building still?
@@jonathanholmes3223 yes, absolutely! I'm working in quite small project, since I'm assemblying my workshop from zero, but it's my full time occupation
Hi. I also have Sonus 60 at home . Could you please provide the registration of voices?
which registration is used in the introduction?
This was played using the internal speakers only. The organ is just in a relatively small music room here recorded on a Zoom H2n 'Handy Recorder". Sonus is very flexible, and with a bit of 'juggling' you can make it sound how ever you want it, a real chameleon of an instrument!
