    i found this very interesting, but mot helpful, because now i dont know what you should do if youre teaching a young horse not to be pushy while being led

    • @being-herd
      @being-herd 2 дня назад

      Thanks for your comment! When your young horse is pushy, it could have many reasons. It could just be playfullyness (especially in young geldings, and in that case he will see asking him to back up as an invitation to play, which will increase his 'pushiness'), it could also be nervousness, as the horse is separated from its herd - and so on. So, there are two important steps. First to give him all the signals, that you want to become part of his herd (as only then he will follow you out of trust), and of course, most importantly, to set boundaries. Not by backing him up, but by blocking him. You could do that by raising your hand up, right in front of his eyes (without touching) to block his view. But this it a longer topic, I might make a video about it soon 🐎🧡

    My Mustang mare Cinder is that 'one horse' for me. She taught me, that - all I had to do, to change her behaviour - was to change myself... I even wrote a Blog article about it: www.peopleandhorses.com/index.php/2024/04/25/from-fear-to-a-true-friendship-my-journey-of-reconnecting-with-horses-and-rediscovering-myself/

    I back up my oldest mare alot, not as a "fix" for bolting, but to take out her energy, shes really fast and just throws her weight infront of her and runs after it, so backing her up makes her stop, use her muscle and think for a second, so she'll be slower again for a while, and slowly rebuilt built the muscle she needs to hold her own weight

    • @being-herd
      @being-herd 8 дней назад

      Backing up a horse is not a problem in itself, but if your mare behaves like that, there is something causing this (e.g. not enough movement during the day, stress in her herd, pressure to comply, confusion, frustration, fear. To just back her up might solve the problem short term, but it's always best to find the trigger and remove it 🤗

    • @being-herd
      @being-herd 12 дней назад

      Good question. There are many reasons why horses wave their tails. Sometimes it's a subtle form of communication (e.g. that the horse is uncomfortable with something). In this case it's just the flies. This was filmed in summer, and the flies were all over at this time.

  • @being-herd

    We all know where we’re going of course, but someone is deciding the overall direction. The horse in the middle - she’s the situational leader. Just before the video starts, we met the first horse (Shiloh) on the trail, and she changed direction to join us and walk back to where she came from. There’s a lot going on. For example, you can tell we’re a herd because the horse in the middle (Cinder) is waiting for me, and the horse in front is waiting briefly for the two of us. Oh, I could talk for hours about this. And I do - in the Being Herd Membership. 🤗

    Join up is used to start the relationship. To gain trust and authority. The key is to stop when the horse has shown you its desire to stop. You push any animal into a corner with no chance to escape it will fight. A horse being a herd animal it will not want to fight unless it is in that position. You dont put it in that postion. A person is capable of giving a horse confort and peace after it has given the signals. A car or chicken isnt

    • @being-herd
      @being-herd 3 месяца назад

      Your approach is the traditional way, which is based on the dominance theory. When you actually observe wild horses, you will notice, that there is no situation within a herd, that resembles anything like the situation in a round pen, aside from a stallion kicking a youngster out of its herd, a situation we don't want our horse to put in. And moreover, the one chased away has somewhere to go, a horse in a round pen not. The situation you create, is not only unnatural, it also doesn't lead to the desired outcome. The only thing you create is a helpless and obedient horse, which has nothing to do with a relationship.

    The way people think violence and anger = listening… like it doesn’t work with humans to other humans what makes you think it works towards animals. i honestly hate people who are like that with a burning passion and wish that when they think THAT is okay to do to their animals then the same treatment should be given to them when they don’t understand confusing directions or to “make them listen” like how they do to their horses. oh wait but that would mean jail time. weird how that works..

    Horses feel what their riders feel, when you’re mad or anxious, so is the horse. And the saddest part is that horses usually don’t fight back, they’ll just continue to endure abuse and when a rescue eventually gets them, they’re in horrible shape. Horses are gentle and loyal creatures, treat them as such

    • @being-herd

    I started hunter jumping at about 6 years old. I can promise that a trustful relationship built on mutual respect and being in tune with your horse will get you so much farther than forced compliance. It’s about the horse and the rider fitting together. Sometimes it’s not the right fit. You have to be able to read your horse and teach them to respond to your cues with positive reinforcement. You have to care for your own horses needs and build trust not just have someone else doing the work for you. It might not seem like the grooming and the feeding and the doctoring matters to people who get to a certain competitive level but it DOES. I groomed show horses and I’ve had their parents tell me they react differently to me than they do to them. I know my horses body language even as he has aged into retirement better than anyone ever will. There’s things he will easily do for me as his long term rider that took a lot of work for even the best students that eventually learned hunter jumping on him. It’s about the relationship and the ribbons mean absolutely nothing without the bond. The relationship is the point in my opinion. Those riders go the farthest and in my experience end up with less broken bones.

    And let me add, when you put a blanket on your horse, you're interfering with the natural isolation of their coat, so now the blanket needs to do the whole job. If e.g. it's minus 10 or colder, the blanket should have around 300g.
